Remember when a month ago he was the worst player in the NHL and Francis's worst offseason move and it was a travesty he was playing instead of Boychuk and Terry?

Malone continues to be the butt of "terrible player" jokes around here, but he has:

- Tied Gerbe in goal scoring in fewer games
- Passed Dwyer in fewer games
- Passed #freezachboychuk
- Scored at a higher rate than Rask
- Just a shade behind Nash in pace

All while having by far the lowest TOI of any regular forward.

At what point do we start saying, "hey, this guy is actually a reasonable 4th line winger?".

Well, he could become a 20 goal scorer and that'll probably still follow him around. That's just how it works around here I think.

He's playing well lately (that whole line is), but he's taking the same amount of shots, they're just happening to go in. Like Chris Terry, I wouldn't be surprised if it just dries up in an instant.

He's a 4th liner, it will dry up in an instant. His chance quality has gone way up, (see Penalty Shot) so that helps. Dwyer usually goes through a streak like this every year too.

Edit: favorite part of his goal last night was the total lack of a move or a celebration. Pick the spot, hit the spot, turn and skate the other way like he'd done it 1,000 times before. Not even an arm raise.

It's an example of shot quality too. They're actually decent looking goals, not just low quality shots from outside the circles getting a lucky bounce. They are a damn good 4th line, whether they're scoring goals or not.

The shots may not be different, but the scoring chances have been much higher both individually and for the on-ice group.

The hope for Malone that might make him different than Terry, is that he is contributing to the increase in scoring chances, whereas Terry looked like he was just the recipient of his linemates setting him up for abnormally high percentage chances.

The other thing going for Malone, is even 10 goals would be huge for a defensive 4th liner getting 10 minutes a night. If somehow he did more, allah bestow many blessings upon him, but I'd take 8g8a 9 minutes a night, some PK, some hits, and some fights in a heartbeat.

Awesome thread. I'd love for Malone to pot 10. That would be hella impressive for a 4th liner. The offense we're getting here is a nice bonus. You gotta admit, that 4th line looks really solid right now overall. Though they get hemmed in badly against most teams' top lines, so do most 4th lines. As bad as we are, we have a lot of nice pieces coming together. We most desperately need a better middle 6. Guys like Gerbe and Lindholm are a bit over their heads and Skinner has been pretty awful this year. His 5 on 5 scoring is not terrible, but he still needs to score more.

Edit - I would bet $5 against Malone hitting 10. I suspect him to go cold instantly.

Remember though, folks, inconsistency in the 4th line is also a bad thing. These guys should be grinding out shifts the entire year. If the shots don't fall, that's another thing all together, but the reason Brad Malone was getting so much heat around here for being useless the first 40 games of the season is because he WAS useless the first 40 games of the season. The guy we're seeing now is brimming with confidence and actually looks like a bottom line difference maker. That's a good thing, but that doesn't absolve all sins. We need him to bring the same effort every night if he's going to be an energy player. The goals and points are bonuses.

He wanted to name his Harris Teeter sandwich the "Maloney Balogney." Your argument is invalid.

There's a quite a difference between purchasing a package of bologna from the lunch meats cooler and purchasing some bologna from the deli counter.

Bologna is easily the worst sandwich meat. That is a fact.

Not even close. When I was a youngster working at a local grocery store, there was 1 regular customer who ALWAYS bought Head Cheese.

Not that Bologna is anything special (although I agree with Rod about frying it). Granted, I must admit I've never tried Head Cheese. Just couldn't get past the sight of it.
