Every time people have counted Ovechkin out he's proven them wrong. I firmly believe he will break Gretzky's record, this 5 year contract solidifies that.

People said he was finished in 2017..... went on to lead the league in goals 3 more times

I think its crazy that he has a chance to beat the record. Its just one of those things you would've never thought possible.

I wonder how many goals he could have if there wasn't lockouts & other shortened seasons.

He’s lost out on a potential 167 games from 2005, 2013, 2020, and 2021. At his current career pace (.609 G/GP), that could be an additional 101 goals, which would put him at 831 currently, just 63 away from Gretzky…

...he plays 'til he's 45 and gets 1000 goals...and then goes back to Russia to finish off with CSKA Moscow for a year...and scores 50 there...

...or he doesn't...

Just for fun Crosby would have passed Dionne for 6th all time in points this season under the same scenario.

Ovi would be at 1447 good for 16th in points.

But then again this thread isn't about pace but actual counting goals and the obsession some have with Ovi breaking Gretzky's record.

OV is an anomaly. Father Time will come, but later than usual. Just like Ronaldo/Messi, just like LeBron, just like Brady.

Also, if he breaks Gretzky’s number, I’m pretty sure he would go for 900. Why not? 900 goals is… in THIS ERA, I can’t even understand it.

GOAT-like stuff y’all

He's pretty washed at this point and I've been the biggest Ovi fan. His speed is gone and so is his scoring dominance.

I don't think he will pass 850. I think 5 seasons Ovi might do 29, 27, 21, 18, 14 and that's it. Or even retire before that or be traded or go back to Russia.

Crosby is also pretty washed in the PPG now compared to his earlier days. But the aging is catching up to both fast.

Aging is unpredictable and so are injuries and shortened seasons, but a drop from 24 in 44 to 29 in 82 is a really steep one. Probably it will not happen in just one year

He's actually had 2 massive drops already though so far he's been able to recover

'09-'10 50 in 72
'10-'11 32 in 79

and

'15 - '16 50 in 79
'16 - '17 33 in 82

He recovered both times but the issue now as I see it is that his speed is gone and he can't remain that good at scoring without his speed.

Not long ago he could do things like

But he appears to be done in terms of speed. He did catch guys by backchecking hard in 2019 but last season he seemed a lot slower than 2019.

Yes, Ovechkin had two wrist injuries that fortunately had no long-term effects. With his shot taken away, Ovechkin went from 50-goal form to 30-goal form.
Ovechkin has not relied on his speed for a long time now, half of his goals is him creeping up on the defense and either ripping off a shot from the left circle or tapping in a rebound. No matter how much he slows down, he should be able to do what old Brett Hull was doing, and Brett Hull went 39-30-37-25 after turning 35.
