what I don't get is that Cody "the adventure" Franson never get's mentioned yet the whip is out constantly for Ranger and Gunnarsson:shakehead

This. Franson has been BY FAR the worst Dman in the last 10 games. Just poor in his own zone, poor coverage, not physical in front of his own net. Don't have the stats right in front of me but the goals against when Franson is on the ice is far more than any other Dman on the Leafs. Rielly is just a victim of being paired with Franson.

edit; found the stats

On-ice goals against per 60 minutes:

Rielly: 3.86
Franson: 3.20
Gunnarsson: 1.48
Phaneuf: 1.42
Gardiner: 1.41
Ranger: 1.27
Fraser: 0.82

Gunnar isn't hated people just don't think he's a #2 guy and he's not

oh yes he is, people continually swipe at him, his contract and put blame squarely on him for almost any goal scored when he's on the ice

a particular example occurred last year when the Leafs gave up a late go ahead goal and on first look it appeared that Gunnarsson hadn't played his man very well and of course the immediate hue and cry was to trade Carl to Siberia or lynch him but on closer inspection..........

Kadri(trying to dipsy-doodle around 3 guys) gives away the puck at the opposition blue-line the Leafs all get caught coming up ice hard on the attack.

The puck gets moved up ice and over the Leaf blue-line and Gunnarsson is the first Dman back as he's angling the opposition forward into the boards.

Kadri comes flying back in a desperate attempt to stay out of Randy's dog house and sheers Gunns out of the play and sends both of them to the ice which in turn springs the attacker free for a little two on none time with the goalie.

even with the replay in slow motion LeafLanders secure in their hockey knowledge came up with more excuses then Rob Ford of why Gunns screwed up

I see little point in railing on a 1m cap 6th/7th D reclamation project.

Lets give this a little bit more time shall we?

We are doing fine in the standings, his game is not outrageously bad, DN will do something about it, if his game is not up to playoff snuff.

Anyways, part of all these going ons has to do with Franson.

He wants top 4 money, they are giving him top 4 5/5 minutes and frankly he is failing.

Don't be shocked to see DN address the D come TD, our 2nd pairing is not getting the job done 5/5.

Now that DN has shored up his depth upfront and in net, all thats left is to tweak the D, the slottings are off.

Ranger is our best defenseman at playing actually defense.

People bash him for turnovers every player makes. It's ridiculous

Exactly correct.

Franson is way worse defensively. His only positive attribute is his shot from the point, as long as he doesn't try to get it through pairs of legs coming at him. I can't see him being paid over $2.5M at the moment!

This. Right now, he is the only defenseman who plays the body hard. The mean style of hockey.

I've loved Ranger's game over the past 5-7 games. Always in position defensively, doesn't back down physically. Barring a few errors in judgement with passes out of the zone, I've been more than happy with his game.

Franson on the other hand...

I want to like Franson. I really do. 6'5", seems to be able to play the body, sometimes. Great shot, decent passing, slow but effective at moving the puck from the d-zone... Sometimes. But he has zero consistency to his game. He makes decisions with his passes that sometimes baffle me, he's TERRIBLE in front of our net, he doesn't have an active stick, and Reilly is getting 0 offensive grooming because of him. I want to like him so badly, but he's making it so hard.

Cody Franson has been playing a lot worse than Ranger considering that he was playing an all-round game during the playoffs. He consumed heavy minutes and was quite productive as well.

Completely agree. I'm confident Ranger will be solid by time playoffs rolls around, but I'm not so sure Franson will be a Leaf past the deadline. Bridge deals are used to give the player a chance he deserves a long term, lucrative contract. At the moment, I certainly wouldn't be throwing a lot of coin towards Franson.

Nailed it perfectly.

1 step forwards, 2 steps back with Ranger

he'll make a good play, and then follow it up with 2 terrible plays

Spin it whatever way you want... but fact is teams don't score as much when Ranger is on ice as compared to other Leafs d-men.

If Ranger makes 2 terrible plays, makes me wonder how many more bad plays other Leafs D-men are making.

In terms of actual defense, I would rank our D:

Gunnarsson - shot blocking king, so underrated on these boards, best positional player on the team. Physicality is the only thing missing

Phaneuf - Lack of speed is why I give it to Gunnarsson

Ranger - Makes boneheaded plays but has the speed and size to get back and stop the goal, less penalties are a must

Fraser - Crease clearing & physicality make him the perfect #6 D

Gardiner/Rielly - Make risky plays offensively, but can use their speed to make up for it defensively.

Franson - Make risky plays offensively, leaves partner out to dry defensively. Should be our #5 D playing with Fraser & a PP specialist.

Yes guys like Ranger, Rielly & Gardiner make boneheaded decisions but they work their ***** off to get back and make up for it. Franson is our weakest defensive D. If we take offense into consideration the list looks much different though.

I agree. I also believe alot of his missed shots are shots he intentionally shoots wide.

I agree with this and am frankly surprised that there are people here advocating that Ranger has been more solid Defensively than both Gunnar and Phaneuf.

I think he's been pretty solid overall, and improving as the season goes on.

He just makes these horrendous mistakes once in a while that make you go "what the hell was that?' and those are the plays that stick in peoples heads. Makes it easy for people to hate him.

Overall though he really hasn't been that bad at all. Makes a lot of good plays every game that goes unnoticed.
