How do you think, Kuznetsov can be benched in post season games like Kessel in Vegas las year?

He won’t be their 6th highest paid after Necas and Jarvis get new deals this summer. Then he’ll be, once again, #8 on the depth chart.

He’s a $3.9M depth player with one year left on his deal, playing as advertised. Why is this a thread?
Because literally nothing that you wrote can be seen as a positive. And "playing as advertised" is cute but undoubtedly the deal was made in hopes he bouces back to some degree.

"Why is discussing Kotkaniemi's production a thread", "Why is this a thread?". The real question is why are so many of Canes fans under the impression their team shouldn't be discussed?

It’s not a negative either — again, he’s exactly what he was expected to be. Everyone realizes it’s not 2018 anymore. He was brought in to be depth scoring and that’s exactly what he is.

He was worth a draft pick in the ~80-90 OA range. How much of a bounceback do you think anyone was expecting?

There have been at least 3 threads already this week to point out that Canes bottom-6ers are in fact bottom-6ers. It’s a puzzling pattern on the eve of the playoffs for a 111-point team that has added talent at the top of the lineup.

He looks horrible in "canes" and in 2023/24 season in general

Still played 12 minutes so your comment might age worse than the thread. I am now, however, really curious what are your expectations for him.
You base what you think of his play by his minutes when you don’t understand the Canes or his coach. He will always choose defense over offense, and center is a big deal for him. He would’ve left Drury over Kuzy the whole time if Drury hadn’t gotten hurt. Koko played hard down the stretch so he’s getting the first look, and it wouldn’t surprise if Drury was next in line. There’s no reason to move Kuzy up if he can score two pts from the “fourth” line and second pp. The Canes have two forwards from the “fourth” line on the second pp, to give you an idea of what the coach is like.

If we’re down in a game Kuzy’s line will play more and if we’re holding a lead they’ll play less. Which is hardly a surprise.

I've always liked the idea of having a guy in your bottom 6 who can outscore his opposition because he's a Top 6 guy on the decline. Kuzy looks to be fitting this bill perfect. This skill guy with less minutes and expectations thing might work out for him. In either case, happy it's going well for him as he takes a lot of heat on HF.lol

He is still a bit of a gamble. He, actually, plays exactly the same way he was playing for the Caps earlier this season. BUT he is on a much better team now, has better matchups, and his on ice time is limited.

For example, if we discount his 1+1 from yesterday, he turned the puck over a few times (he is prone to lose it in most precarious situations), but his teammates bailed him out. So, he still has the ability to contribute offensively, but his overall value to the Canes will depend on how his teammates can clean up the mess he creates every game.

I do understand why the Canes took a chance on him though. The Canes were seriously offensively challenged last year in the playoffs. But now they have him, Guentzel, Orlov (he is an offensive defenseman), and a healthy Svech of course. Plenty of firepower has been added. We’ll see if this works this time.

Yes, people are always confused on how deep teams are run/structured. Too many people that think the Leaf method of a few guys that do everything and plugs you hope can hang on is the default method. On a deep and balanced team, the line numbers aren’t as important, someone on a “bottom six” line isn’t a backup and players can be mixed and matched as needed. Kuznetsov gives a more offensive component than others. If they’re protecting a lead, he’d be used less. If they are trailing, he’d be used more. They also use him on the powerplay. For this year while they have the cap space, I like the fit. Only paid a third to get that kind of versatile add. It was pretty savvy while they’re all in.

So he still played 12 minutes in the game Canes trailed almost the whole time and then down to 9 in the game Canes led almost the whole time. Any more theories on how this doesn't reflect his play?

They were holding a short lead most of the game, wouldn’t the answer to that question be obvious.

He’s not the guy you play when you’re holding onto the lead. Duh.

12 minutes is fine for him? He plays pp time as well.

For the third time….what’s your beef with him? Did he kick your dog? Steal your SO? Were they with him at that party in that video?!?

When the trade happened my thought was that Carolina is probably the best possible place for him to end up. They have always been super deep and solid with responsible players, but lacked players with that natural top end skill. Kuznetsov playing limited minutes and helping on the power play while not being relied on to be “the guy” is important, and the team structure can cover for him on his trademark gaffes he tends to do sometimes when he’s way too casual.

Carolina did great at the trade deadline, they look like a team that’s going to be tough to beat.
