There's a difference between making a critical, constructive comment, and "tag her in a tweet with criticism and see how long it takes for her to block you." But I'm not sure that someone who names themselves "dammit100" would know the difference. I guess you must have missed it.

ahh.... judging people on here for their choice of usernames, brilliant! Aaaaaanyway, I made my first comment here b/c Chantel blocked me on twitter without me trying to get blocked. I guess you must have missed it. :sarcasm:

Maybe, just maybe, you people are placing a level of importance on the 3rd member of the broadcasting team that doesn't exist? It's fluff pieces for a hockey team. She's not anchoring the CBS Evening News.

Maybe nerves didn't matter at the beginning, because its not that big a deal. Because it's just the Fox Sports Carolinas Hurricanes Pregame show, and there is no harm in letting someone acclimate to the job.

Which gets to Bud Dry's point. My guess is they brought on a 3rd person to do pieces like the one they did on the War room in Toronto.

And honestly, I'm not watching the games to see/hear her do interviews and commentary. The key is to DVR the game and start 45 minutes late, so as to completely avoid commercials and inane commentary.

I've learned over the years an intermission fits a DVR'd episode of Jeopardy perfectly if you skip the interviews with the contestants.

Another thing here ... this is an organization that will do whatever they do, as cheaply as they can. I think that's how we got Chantel. Compared to other years, this year's broadcasts have been really "Mickey Mouse," and I don't know how John & Tripp keep a straight face when the cameras come back to them at times!

To me, it's not placing more importance on a job, it's a matter of competency and our organization's image. There's still enough opinion among hockey fans about "non-traditional markets" and how they don't know hockey; putting people on air to represent the team who only add fuel to that fire is a detriment.

What do you mean, "you people"?

The eyes of the hockey universe are on the Hurricanes pregame show on fox sports Carolinas, and they are judging us harshly?

Well, it gets to the point. I think we have different ideas as to how important and widely viewed her work is.

For example, there have been plenty of "Rank the broadcasters" threads in the main forums, and nobody has mentioned Chantel, despite a lot of people ranking John and Tripp highly.

I took my lunch at the practice at RCI today, and Chantel parked right next to me as I was getting out.

I had to laugh at the irony of that for the entire hour.

No, but 1) that doesn't mean I can't want better for our own broadcast; and 2) doesn't mean no one else does.

It's fine to want a better person for the job, it's an entirely different thing to suggest the person reading the scores on a local Canes broadcast is going to further fuel already ignorant people's views on non traditional markets. And if it does, so what? Those people are ignorant morons who aren't worth your time to begin with.

The way I see it, they took a flier on an arsthetically pleasing woman who worked for NESN. NESN has a good track record for producing talent that goes on to bigger things (Kathryn Tappan and Heidi Whatney). I mean its not like its out of left field for JR to pick someone up and throw them in the lineup expecting them to be great before they are ready...

Sadly, some of those ignorant morons are in positions of influence (looking at you, Damien Cox), and while they're not really worth ANYONE'S time, they do shape opinions.

I think her parents are to blame. C'mon, Chantel is from the Stripper 101 name book. How can she be taken seriously? ;)

Regarding how it makes us look to outside observers? Eh, I couldn't care less. Sports is so much about predispositions and pre-formed opinion, that even if you had an Emmy Award winner, some would still find fault.

Whatney worked at NESN for 3 years. Tappen for 5 years. Currently Naoko Funayama has been there for almost 5 years. All three were full time sideline reporters.

Chantel interned at NESN for 8 months out of college, occasionally producing little vignettes for the Bruins.

You're spot-on that JR did exactly the same thing here that he does with players, and not in a good way.

I thought the recorded piece on the Toronto War room was interesting and well done.

Could be that's the type of thing that got her the job. Being able to put together a segment like that is a skill that would set her apart, compared to saying "Nice goal, tell me about it." during the riveting intermission interviews.

Chantel and Jeff Hamilton: the not-ready-for-prime time-players v 2.0.

My point was drawing from the NESN talent pool. No one is going to work as a full time sideline reporter at NESN and then jump ship to Fox Sports Carolinas. It's a smaller audience with less national exposure.

And as you agreed, it's a classic JR move. And like most of these moves he makes, if they don't work out, next year there will be a new person in that role. That is making the assumption that JR gives a flying **** about this.

We'll always have to hear that type of moronic ignorance.

Those are the idiots that will complain no matter what happens. There could be another ice age that comes down to cover Raleigh, but we would still not be a 'true hockey market' because it's still a couple of degrees warmer down here. No matter how many Stanley Cups we win, no matter how many players we put in the HOF, we'll never be good enough. We could become so popular we need to build a 40k seat arena that sells out and has 20 year wait lists for tickets, and there'd be some excuse. "The NFL has 80k seat stadiums and is more popular. The NHL is a failure in Raleigh because you only have a 40k seat arena." The Canes could be in Raleigh for 100 years, but we'd still not be good enough because we haven't been around for 200 years. We'll simply never be good enough for those who live where apparently every person is taught how to play hockey on a frozen pond in the womb before they are ever born.

Back on topic, WalkerBabe I agree 100% that the broadcasts this year are 'Mickey Mouse', and they obviously did go the cheap route to get someone with less experience. That's pretty much exactly what I've said already. And it does reek of how JR has handled filling the holes in the roster. But I guess the difference is much like that some people hate LaRose because he keeps getting put in the Top 6, while I and others get upset with JR for giving us a roster where he has been needed there.

That said, most of us seem to recognize that Chantel has improved. No, she isn't where she needs to be yet. We can all agree to that. Maybe she will improve to be as good as we'd like. Maybe not. Maybe they'll shift her into more just doing little bits like the Toronto War Room that she has done a much better job on, and take her off reading the scores. Maybe she just needs to be put in the right role for the team.
