Why don't any of you ever talk about this? You do realize the whole thing is over once Hossa retires, right? Makes this long term build from within crap even dumber that it would sound if we didn't have the Sword of Damocles hanging over our heads.

If he retires, and doesn't just ride off into the sunset "hurt" every year.

Obviously that is the plan but there would actually have to be an injury. When Hossa comes to the Hawks and says he doesn't want to play anymore, he's still going to have to continue to play until he has a believable fake injury on the ice. He can't just go home to Slovakia for the summer and say he tripped over a goat and can't play anymore.

Deal with it when it comes. I'm sure the cap will be high enough to not have to worry about it. I trust Stan, he's a master of the cap.

Stan didn't have the chance to plan this out; it was just laid at his doorstep after the fact. I don't know the exact numbers year by year he would retire, but it is astronomical. Makes the 2010 penalty a pimple on the ass of what this would be.

Yeah, it'll be all over if we have a 3 or 4M cap hit for a year or two when the cap will be 70-80M in a few years.

Bowman not going full-Shero every deadline has nothing to do with Hossa. It's hilarious how you stroke the Red Wings all the time yet don't understand how they built their success. Outside of being the NHL Yankees in 2002, they've relied on their pipeline to sustain their success, not "build for the future."

He has a chance to plan it out though, which he has probably already thought of.

If he retires in

next off-season = 2.625mil
2016 = 3.675mil
2017 or later = 4.275mil

So, if he retires in the next 2-3 years, it's less than the 2010 penalty.

Not only that, who cares? We wouldn't have 2 Cups without him, and it's quite possible that he plays until he's 42, or they LTIR him with back problems or concussions issues.

The cap recapture penalty stays with the Hawks even if he is traded and retires from another team.

And if we don't trade Hossa, the Hawks have the option of attempting putting him on LTIR for concussions/back problems.

I think Hossa really likes playing hockey. If it comes down to it he'll drop to LTIR or get traded to a team looking to save and hit the cap floor just for the opportunity to get more ice time if the game passes him by.

There are still too many options and he's still playing too well for me to be very concerned about a recapture penalty anytime soon. Watching him in the STL series made me feel pretty comfortable about him earning his cap hit at least for a couple more seasons.

If Holmgren could wiggle his way out of mess after mess, I'm not too worried about this front office. I wouldn't be surprised if they've already considered what they'll do, in detail, if Hossa surprised them with a retirement in any of the remaining years on his contract.

Its what we had to do to sign him. He has been great and we have 2 cups in his time here. Whatever we deal with going forward it was worth it.

That's not the question. It's that we should take advantage of the years we have Hossa and no cap penalty. Talk about a double whammy, lose one of your best players and basically still carry his cap hit.

They came 1 goal from a repeat trip to the Final. Yeah, I think they're doing a decent job of taking advantage of the years he's here.

Some day everything I have ever said about Bowman and the Hawks will make sense to everyone. And I can tell you what day that will be. The day we make the big trade and all of the Cups that come after it and because of it or the day he is fired.

The salary cap and all assorted red tape from it is a joke. They should've simplified it in the last CBA.

A solid cap that doesn't fluctuate would have been a great start.

Doesn't fluctuate? What the **** are you talking about? Cap goes up when revenue goes up. You think the league should make more money but keep playing the players what they were in 2005?

It's not an excuse. It's reality. Jesus.
