Who needs any of these guys when this guy is available (yes as an RFA I know), is younger than them all and would be our new answer to the Tomas Holmstrom question...

I'd love to have him with Datsyuk feeding him shots in front of the net to grab rebounds and get in those dirty goals.I wouldn't mind Horn on the 3rd line and PP specialist, but I don't know if I'd be happy with him in a top 6 role

I've never seen him as a stellar two way player, but with Datsyuk, he wouldn't need to be. I'm looking at Hornvquist as the type of guy who will crash the front of the net or screen the goalie and take care of all the loose pucks down low. True, he doesn't have Homer's size and strength but given what I've seen of him, he is more than serviceable for the gritty, garbage goal forward.Do you watch enough of him to know of his defensive game? I've heard mixed reviews and have never gotten a good shot to spend time focusing on him.

At minimum you can run up the bidding price on the guy. I wouldn't go over about 4.5 to 4.75 million a season for Hornvquist, but it can't hurt to try.Do you really see Nashville giving him up? Wasn't he their leading scorer last season? I don't see a team lacking offensive power giving up last season's leading scorer.
Tough choice but if Horton is injury free and isn't asking for too much money or term I'll take him. We already have a replacement Filppula in Nyquist, though neither have shown their true offensive upside this year in the NHL.
If Horton wants 6M or 6.5M over 5 or 6 years then we should stay away, anything over 4 years we should stay away from as well. Horton has only played 80+ games in a season 3 times and over the past 4 years (not including this year) he'll miss 18 games a year.
I'd give him 5M on a 4 year deal, 5.5M on a 2 or 3 year deal.
Filppula depending on how he finishes this season and how he does in the playoffs could get anywhere from 3.5M-5M, maybe even 5.5M if a team gets crazy. I'd give 4.25M for 4 years, a bit of potential money there but if he is a 55-65 point forward he's well worth it.
C). Corey Perry.
A lot of Anaheim fans are actually quite frightened that he'll bolt to play closer to home. I think there was even a report that stated he would have seriously considered playing for Toronto if Burke hadn't been fired (Or I could be confabulating, and it was just speculation... I can't recall correctly). Getzlaf for sure is going to resign, but Corey Perry is far from certainty to resigning.
I don't think we have any shot at the top free agents this off season bc holland decided to dump nearly 12 million to Quincey, Bertuzzi, cola and Samuelsson for next season.. None of those players are difference makers and can be easily replaced by Grand Rapids players.
With that money we could've made a strong push for perry or sign Horton at 5 mill, a top paring defenseman while still being able to retain white, flip, Brunner and the rfas
Money isn't going to stop the Wings if they REALLY have their heart set on a particular UFA and can entice him. If Perry was willing to come to Detroit, they could sign him, then buy out Samuelsson and trade Quincey.
On topic, Horton of course. Even with the concussion concerns.
Sorry, but, how can you say seriously that Nyquist hasn't shown hid true offensive upside in the NHL this year? He's played two freaking games.
Agree with the rest of what you said, although with some young talent coming in the next two years, Flip, as much as I like him, might be expendable.
Hnm... it was late when I wrote that, I don't think I phrased that right. What I was trying to say was that Nyquist (for multiple reasons) wasn't able to show what he can really do and that Filppula may have had his career year last year or he may still be somewhat hurt.
One thing we shouldn't overlook here is that for a lot of players going to UFA you want your best year to be the year you hit FA. That great year is fresh in everyone's mind and a GM might be willing to give you 250,000-1,000,000$ more per year if then they would have the year before. The only way to put up those great numbers is if you're playing games, I think that Filppula's knee injury is worse then he is letting on and if he had another year left on his deal he would be siting right now. Hell for all we know Babcock might have asked him to sit but he said he's able to play through it, we did see it with Cleary last year. Lastly these players aren't stupid, Filppula knows that Nyquist & Co. are coming up & his job is on the line, maybe not now but in a couple years for sure, if you're job was on the line would you play at 65%, 75%? I would.
I know that if we let Filppula walk some team will sign him but for every game he doesn't play he loses money and he runs the risk of being passed by Nyquist, he just lost 1 potential team interested in him this offseason. Now it's true that every game he plays and he doesn't produce he also loses money as last looks more and more like an outlier but if he is indeed hurt he can say that he produced x amount of points while hurt.
I would think resting for 10-15 games and coming back strong would be a better strategy than playing all year hurt, putting up bad numbers and then look for a big payday.
I'm no professional athlete though.
Reasons like this make me really hope the re-alignment goes through and we're moved to the east. Should help getting some Ontario FA talent.Detroit is pretty close to Toronto. I like the sounds of this.

Don't think him or Getz consider Detroit unless we throw absurd amounts of cash. I recall them stating their disgust for Detroit during that short-lived playoff rivalry.
