The initial report this morning from New York is all tracks listed as "good." The hope is an upgrade to the fast/firm delineation as the sun dries the surfaces. Turf racing is officially a go.

The finale on Friday was moved to dirt following heavy rain.

Preview/analysis: 2021 Belmont Stakes Quick Sheet: Get to Know the Belmont Horses
History: Inaugurated in 1867. This is known as the toughest test of the Triple Crown competition. Where heartbreak and heartache met in differing forms that prevented so many from winning the Triple Crown....
  • Where Spectacular Bid in 1979 and Smarty Jones in 2004 fell victim to shocking defeats and almost universal dismay....
  • Where California Chrome lost that led to the chagrin of Chromies in 2014....
  • Where War Emblem broke bad in 2002, Big Brown failed miserably in 2008 and Alysheba was trounced in 1987....
  • Where Queens-raised trainer Johnny Campo lost with Pleasant Colony in 1981...
  • Where East Coast (NY) and West Coast (CA) clashed but on this day the local star Easy Goer got revenge against Sunday Silence in 1989...
  • Where Funny Cide, the local sensation, couldn't complete the deal on a rare sloppy track in 2003....
  • Where Chris Antley saved the life of claimer Charismatic in 1999 in another failed Triple Crown bid; one of the most dramatic scenes captured live in any sport....
  • Where Silver Charm was picked up late in the stretch by Touch Gold in 1997 in a three-way thriller...
  • Where Tom Durkin famously called the 1998 edition with "Here's the wire... It's too close to call! Was it Real Quiet or was it Victory Gallop? A picture is worth a thousand words, this photo finish is worth $5 million dollars. Oh no. History in the waiting, on hold until we get that photo finish." ...
  • Where Seattle Slew was a perfect 9-for-9 after winning the 1977 edition.
  • Where Affirmed beat Alydar -- the greatest rivalry of the past 50 years -- in a battle that will last eternity in 1978 to give us a third Triple Crown in the past six years....
  • Where American Pharoah ended the long curse in 2015 and Justify repeated undefeated in 2018....
  • Where Afleet Alex had perhaps the most impressive kick in the history of the race in 2005 and though not a Triple Crown won or lost, more so artistry captured...
  • Where Rags to Riches in 2007 became the first filly to win since 1905...
  • Where bombers like Sarava in 2002, Birdstone in 2004 and Da'Tara in 2008 became instant folklore....
  • Where Secretariat won by 31 lengths which led to perhaps most famous call in T-bred history “Secretariat is widening now. He is moving like a tremendous machine." The most famous photograph in the sport's history and one of the most iconic in American history for any athletic event truly did tell the story.

Two races in, two wins by jockeys who replaced the injured Irad Ortiz. One by his brother who picked up the mount on Known Agenda in the Belmont Stakes.

Essential Quality is the winner. Death fractions for Hot Rod Charlie. Absolute madness. Great stretch duel, but this race was over early.

Putting aside possible Triple Crown winners, what happened today set records at Belmont. More than $112 million was bet on the day, a 10% increase from 2019. More than $60 million was bet on the race. More than $141 million was bet on the three cards from Thursday through Sunday.

Belmont (New York):
  • Handle: $112,725,278, a NYRA record for a non-Triple Crown year and a 10% increase from 2019, the most recent comparable date. $60,459,330 was bet on the Belmont Stakes. The three-day total since Thursday is $141,984,866. Another remarkable total is that since the crowd was reduced to 11,000+ attendance and more than $7 million was bet at the track, that totals to about just under $700 per person -- a staggering number! Keep it going. Horse racing has seen incredible betting totals especially the past couple of years. Mobile wagering is a hot commodity. New York had an exceptional day of weather, Friday not as friendly but horse bettors love deep fields.
  • Irad Ortiz, Jr. was off his mounts and five times replacements won in his spot.
  • Jose Ortiz rode three winners, each as a replacement for his injured brother Irad.
  • Jose Lezcano, who won the finale on Friday, was off all his mounts today though I didn't see a reason.
  • Kendrick Carmouche was transported to a hospital following a spill in the finale. He appeared to suffer an ankle injury..... UPDATE: out eight weeks, broken right ankle.
  • John Velazquez went 9 0-1-1. A forgettable day for the Hall of Famer.
  • Chad Brown entered 11 horses in five races and won three times. He added a fourth win at Monmouth.
  • Godolphin Racing was 4 2-2-0 today. The Arab-based conglomerate was founded by the ruler of Dubai.
  • Race 1: Wit (Jose Ortiz/Todd Pletcher) debuted to a win. A $575,000 purchase by Mike Repole and Vinny Viola, among others, he is a son to Practical Joke.
  • Race 2: Soft Power (Flavien Prat/Chad Brown) debuted to a win. The winner was bred in France.
  • Race 3: Drain the Clock (Jose Ortiz/Saffie Joseph) won the $400,000 Grade I Woody Stephens. The colt is 8 6-1-0 lifetime -- one loss involved a fallen rider -- and is a multiple grades stakes winner. This was the third consecutive race in which the injured Irad Ortiz, Jr. was scheduled to ride but was replaced.
  • Race 4: Lone Rock (Ramon Vazquez/Robertino Diodoro) destroyed the competition to win the Grade 2 $400,000 Brooklyn Stakes. The 6-year-old was out for the 33rd time and won for the fourth time in five starts in 2021.
  • Race 5: Search Results (Javier Castellano/Chad Brown) won the $500,000 Grade I Acorn Stakes. The 3-year-old filly is 5 4-1-0 lifetime and entered off her lone defeat.
  • Race 6: Casa Creed (Junior Alvarado/Bill Mott) won the $400,000 Grade I Jackpocket Jaipur Stakes. Alvarado was uncommonly celebratory following the win. Good stuff. The horse had lost seven straight prior to winning the past two as part of a 20-race career. This was a "Win and You're In" Breeders' Cup race. The trainer finished 1-2 in the race with 10-1 and 28-1 shots, something else not exactly expected.

  • Race 7: Letruska (Jose Ortiz/Fausto Gutierrez) won the $500,000 Grade I Ogden Phipps Stakes. The 5-year-old mare is 19 14-1-1. The millionaire-earner won for the third time in four starts this year. This was a "Win and You're In" Breeders' Cup race.
  • Race 8: Althiqa (Mike Smith/Charlie Appleby) won the Grade I $500,000 Longines Just a Game Stakes. The trainer, based in Europe, finished 1-2. The British-bred was running in North America for the first time in her 10th start.
  • Race 9: Silver State (Ricardo Santana, Jr./Steve Asmussen) won the Grade I $1,000,000 Met Handicap. The 4-year-old colt has won his last six races, is 11-7-2-1 lifetime and received an invite as this was a "Win and You're In" Breeders' Cup race.
  • Race 10: Domestic Spending (Flavien Prat/Chad Brown) won the $750,000 Grade I Manhattan Stakes. The British-bred is 7 6-0-1 lifetime and has won four straight.
  • Race 11: Essential Quality (Luis Saez/Brad Cox) won the $1,500,000 Grade I Belmont Stakes in the races 153rd edition. The son to Tapit is 7 6-0-0 lifetime with his lone loss a fourth place finish in the Kentucky Derby. He proved too much for Hot Rod Charlie (Flavien Prat/Doug O'Neill) who perhaps tired in the stretch after opening up a blistering pace.

The magic of Tapit. This is the sire's fourth Belmont Stakes winner, a race where pedigree is perhaps most important due to the distance. On the male side of his chart, the winner has Tapit, Pulpit, A.P. Indy and Unbridled. That'll get it done. Tapit has yet to sire a Kentucky Derby winner.

  • Race 12: Runaway Rumour (Ricardo Santana, Jr./Jorge Abreu) won the penultimate race on the card.
  • Race 13: Hard Love (Manny Franco/Jonathan Thomas) won the finale. Kentucky Pharoah lost rider Kendrick Carmouche at the start.
Monmouth (New Jersey):
  • Race 12: Devamani (Nik Juarez/Chad Brown) won the $150,000 Grade 3 Monmouth Stakes.
Delaware Park (Delaware):
  • Jaime Rodriguez, jockey, and Jamie Ness, trainer, are dominating this meet. They often pair.
Pimlico (Maryland):
  • Pick 6: The jackpot should exceed $1,000,000 tomorrow which is likely another state record.
  • Charlie Marquez rode three winners. He is 18 years of age.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Edwin Gonzalez rode four winners. His 50 wins is just five behind meet leader Edgard Zayas.
  • Handle: $12.9 million.
Churchill Downs (Kentucky):
  • Mitchell Murrill-Chris Hartman teamed to go a perfect 3 3-0-0. Murrill is from Alabama. Hartman trained since he was 16 years of age in his native Arizona.
Indiana Grand (Indiana):
  • Million Dollar Record: Indiana Grand recorded its highest all-sources handle for a Quarter Horse racing program with $1,000,393 wagered.
Arlington (Illinois):
  • Race 6: Richiesinthehouse (Jareth Loveberry/Larry Rivelli) is an Illinois sensation. The local bred is 26 16-2-1 including 9 6-1-0 at Arlington.

  • Larry Rivelli is Mr. Illinois by any other name. He has 20 wins this meet, 14 more than his closest challenger. The trainer is at 40%.
  • Oh by the way: Save this track. It is easy to point fingers more so in one direction than the other but this track is a national icon and needs to be saved from destruction.
Santa Anita (California):
  • Race 7: Venetian Harbor (Mario Gutierrez/Richard Baltas) wired the field as the favorite to win the Grade 2 $200,000 Monrovia Stakes.
  • Pick 6: The jackpot could approach $3,000,000 tomorrow as it is mandatory payout day.
  • Handle: $11 million.

Jersey Joe Bravo's criticism of his home state was emphasized with an exclamation point in the past few hours. He is moving his tack to California. Bravo blasted New Jersey's 4-person commission which mandated riding without using the whip, as he cited jockey safety. Bravo has won 13 titles in his home state. He has not ridden in Cali much in his 35-year career in which he has amassed over $188 million.

Del Mar and Santa Anita will be his home tracks for the foreseeable future likely into next year.

Belmont Park (New York):
  • Handle: More than $12.5 million.
  • Jose Lezcano, who for some inexplicable reason did not ride Saturday and was replaced on all five mounts, had a 4-bagger today including a natural hat trick. Three of the wins came on turf which is regarded as his specialty. I have yet to see a reason why Lezcano was off his mounts yesterday.
  • Race 7: Australasia (Joel Rosario/Brad Cox) won the $150,000 Jersey Girl Stakes with a strong finish. The Louisiana-bred is a perfect 6 6-0-0 and had raced the first four starts in her native state. Cox came to New York and won the biggest race on both Saturday and Sunday. He is the defending Trainer of the Year in North America.

  • Race 3: Petrus (Javier Castellano/Patrick Quick) won at 20-to-1. The Hall of Famer rider doesn't bring that set of odds to the winner's circle often.
  • John Velazquez (no entries, 0-for-9 yesterday), Kendrick Carmouche (broken ankle; out as much as 10 weeks) and Irad Ortiz, Jr. (cuts, arm, face; out a couple of weeks) all did not ride today.
Monmouth (New Jersey):
  • Paco Lopez rode four winners including the opening two races. Lopez excels in New Jersey but his aggressive riding style was an interest with the no-whip rule in the state. He is 6-for-17 this meet and a potent 35%.
  • Race 8: Altaf (Dylan Davis/Chad Brown) won the $100,000 Lady's Secret Stakes as the 4-to-5 favorite.
Pimlico (Maryland):
  • Jackpot: The 'pot will start at over $974,000 for the next day of racing June 11. That is the largest carryover in the history of Maryland racing.
Churchill Downs (Kentucky):
  • Mitchell Murrill-Chris Hartman paired once and have now been victorious as a team the past six times covering three days. That is rarer than it sounds.
Santa Anita (California):
  • Handle: $13 million.
  • Pick 6 Jackpot: More than $2.8 million was added on mandatory payout day. The total exceeded $3.2 million. There were 555 winners who each cashed for over $4,000.
  • Southern Cal:
    • Santa Anita closes shop June 26.
    • Los Alamitos runs T-breds June 25 - July 5.
    • Del Mar operates July 16 - September 6.
    • Los Alamitos returns September 9-26.
    • Santa Anita returns October 1-31.
    • Del Mar then hosts the Breeders' Cup.

The little track that could, is looking to expand its horizons yet again.

Oaklawn Park has a desire to conduct a 66-day racing season from Dec. 3 until May 7. Oaklawn's daily purse structure is one of the top in the nation. It has become a favorite of horse players and insiders. This would enhance its image as a bigger player in the winter months. Gulfstream, Tampa Bay and southern Cal tracks have advantage of weather and the existence of turf racing but despite what can be erratic and inclement conditions in Arkansas, the track has excelled in almost every avenue.

Gulfstream is installing a synthetic surface with the primary purpose to move turf racing there rather than the dirt track when inclement weather alters racing.

With GPW/Calder now closed permanently to horse racing, Gulfstream becomes the lone track in south Florida. More racing than ever though the days per week will be adjusted.

I believe this is the first track in North America to have three courses: dirt, synthetic and turf.

More on the scene from Oaklawn where trainer Ron Moquett said the transition would be Oaklawn into Churchill into Saratoga. Think about that for a moment.

I mentioned Oaklawn a few times in recent years. It is that solid of a facility. It received national attention even from non-racing entities for its handling of the sport during the virus. Local officials needed to be commended, too. Arkansas did a wonderful job as did track president Louis Cella. Now, perhaps, comes additional rewards.

Oaklawn announces plans to add December live race dates

Oaklawn announced Monday that it intends to add December race dates to its calendar and host a 66-day season from Friday, Dec. 3, to Sunday, May 8, 2022.

"For many years, horsemen have wanted to race here in December to fill a gap in their racing schedule," Oaklawn President Louis A. Cella said in a news release.

"We have completed our resort expansion, including the opening of our luxury hotel, spa and event center. Therefore, the timing is right for another expansion – to our live racing season."

The 66-day season will be conducted largely on a Friday-Sunday basis, with some exceptions. There will be no racing Dec. 24 through Dec. 26 during the Christmas holiday and also no racing on Easter Sunday, April 17. Racing will continue to be offered on Presidents Day on Monday, Feb. 21, 2022.

Oaklawn plans to present the new proposed racing schedule to the Arkansas Racing Commission at its next meeting for approval, the release said.

"We are looking forward to the new format," Cella said. "The additional days will provide a huge economic impact for horsemen, Arkansas Thoroughbred breeders and tourism in Central Arkansas."

"Oaklawn's decision to add racing days in December is wonderful news for Hot Springs and Garland County," Steve Arrison, CEO of Visit Hot Springs, said in the release.

"The expansion of its casino and its addition of a world-class hotel this year already provided Hot Springs with an exciting new feature in its attractions menu. The additional live racing dates will further cement Oaklawn's status as a premier economic engine for our city. We all look forward to this great new reason for everyone to visit Hot Springs."

Purses for the season are projected to be $45 million to $50 million, "the highest in America at that time of year," with all allowance races starting at $100,000.

The decision pertaining to any change to this year's Kentucky Derby has yet to be determined. However, Bob Baffert is fighting.

Baffert, Zedan File Suit Against Kentucky Commission Over Extra Testing In Medina Spirit Saga - Horse Racing News | Paulick Report

Medina Spirit trainer Bob Baffert and owner Amr Zedan have filed a civil suit against the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission (KHRC) in Franklin Circuit Court demanding more testing of the post-race samples taken from the colt after the Kentucky Derby. The suit, filed June 7, seeks temporary and permanent injunctions against the KHRC from “violating the plaintiffs' substantive and procedural due process rights with regard to the analysis of the split biological urine sample” in the case.

Eight days after the Kentucky Derby, Baffert publicly announced he had been informed an initial post-race test on Medina Spirit had revealed the presence of the corticosteroid betamethasone. At the time, Baffert said the horse had never been treated with betamethasone, which comes in multiple forms. Two days later after the ensuing media storm, Baffert announced Medina Spirit had been treated with Otomax, a topical cream approved for use in dogs in the process of trying to clear up a sizable patch of skin irritation.

A split sample test has confirmed the presence of betamethasone, but the KHRC has yet to issue a stewards' ruling regarding the potential disqualification of the horse and/or fines and suspensions for Baffert. In acknowledging the positive split sample, attorneys for Zedan and Baffert last week acknowledged they were going to conduct further testing on samples from Medina Spirit.

lg.php

The lawsuit reveals that the attorneys had made a number of demands regarding the testing of that split sample. The purpose of split sample testing is to confirm or refute the original finding from the initial post-race test in the same medium (blood or urine), but attorneys for Baffert and Zedan demanded that both mediums be tested. They also demanded that both mediums be tested for other compounds present in Otomax, including the anti-fungal clotrimazole and the anti-bacterial gentamicin, as well as the specific chemical form of betamethasone used in the topical application – betamethasone valerate.

Approaching milestones among trainers in North America:
  • Karl Broberg is four wins away from becoming the 13th trainer in history to win 4,000 times.
  • Steve Asmussen is 80 wins behind Dale Baird and first place.
  • Bill Mott is $3,000,000 away from becoming the fourth trainer to reach $300,000,000 in lifetime earnings.

New Hampshire passed historic horse racing. Oaklawn is a gold mine because of it. Kentucky has adopted it. It is a game not a sport but that is lofty news for a dormant state.

What Is Historic Horse Racing?

Historic horse racing (HHR) machines are video gaming terminals that share a lot of features with traditional slots. However, unlike slots, an HHR machine operates using parimutuel betting. This means odds are adjusted based on wagers placed, and winning bets are paid from the pool of losing bets. It is the same system used at traditional horse tracks.

An HHR machine will display historically accurate information regarding a horse’s past stats. But the name of the horse is hidden, as is the name of the trainer and jockey. Betting is based on the horse’s blind resume.

Once bets are placed, the HHR will run a random horse race from the past. Players can watch the whole race or skip directly to the results. With all its bells and whistles, HHR machines can generate the excitement of slot machines.

Royal Ascot 2021: Race schedule, how to stream, watch on TV, history

What is the Royal Ascot?

The Royal Ascot is one of the most well-known horse racing meets in the world. It’s held at one of the top flat racecourses in the United Kingdom and hosts horses from across the globe in 35 races, including eight Group 1 races, over the span of five days.

Racing at Ascot began in 1711 when Queen Anne declared her love for horse racing. The first race was the Her Majesty’s Plate with a seven-horse field. Over a century later, King George IV held the first royal carriage procession on the track to signal the start of the event. The traditions of the royal family, high fashion and elite horse racing have continued ever since.

When and where is the 2021 Royal Ascot?

This year, the Royal Ascot will take place from Tuesday, June 15 to Saturday, June 19 at Ascot Racecourse in Berkshire, England. Ascot is located in the British Summer Time Zone, which is five hours ahead of the Eastern Time Zone in the U.S.

Unlike tracks in America, Ascot Racecourse is shaped like a rounded triangle with two straightaway spokes and includes uphill and downhill stretches.

How can I watch the 2021 Royal Ascot?

NBC is home to the 2021 Royal Ascot, providing comprehensive race coverage and analysis live on TV, in the NBC Sports app and on NBCSports.com before, during and after each race. From Tuesday, June 15 to Friday, June 18, coverage will run on NBCSN from 8:30 a.m. ET to 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 19, the final day of the Royal Ascot, catch live racing on NBC from 9 to 11 a.m. ET and on CNBC from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Stream the Royal Ascot here.
Is the Royal Ascot part of the Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series?

Four Royal Ascot races this year are part of the Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series.
On Tuesday, June 15, the Queen Anne Stakes (G1) at approximately 9:30 a.m. ET offers a spot in the Mile. June 16’s Prince of Wales’s Stakes (G1) breaks from the gate at around 11:20 a.m. ET and is a qualifier for the Turf. The Norfolk Stakes (G2) on Thursday, June 17 at 9:30 a.m. ET is in the Juvenile Turf Sprint division. The Diamond Jubilee (G1) wraps up Royal Ascot’s Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series lineup on Saturday, June 19 at approximately 11:20 a.m. ET with a spot in the Turf Sprint on the line. See the full race schedule below.

Winners of Breeders’ Cup “Win and You’re In” races will receive automatic entry into the corresponding Breeders’ Cup race this November at Del Mar Thoroughbred Club, and all entry fees will be paid for.

Speaking of New Hampshire, the opening race today at Belmont was won by the longest shot on the board at 30-to-1 and trained by a New Hampshire-born conditioner, Amira Chichakly, who is a former assistant to Gary Contessa. She has an eighth lifetime win in her new vocation.

Also from David Grening's Twitter account: jockey Benjamin Hernandez ended a losing streak at 99 with this win.

Gerard Melancon won for the 5,000th time. He became the 37th jockey to reach that figure. Happened tonight in Louisiana. A fairly sizeable group of people in the winners' circle.

  • Karl Broberg became the 13th trainer in North America history to record 4,000 wins. He sent out 11 horses and won five across tracks in Louisiana, Iowa and Texas.
Belmont (New York):
  • Javier Castellano rode four winners including three sent off as favorites. The Hall of Famer is 25th all-time in North America history in victories.
  • Luis Saez rode three winners, two for Todd Pletcher.
  • Todd Pletcher scored a natural hat trick beginning with race 6 in a perfect 3-for-3 day. He has earned over $407 million lifetime, most in North America history.
  • Race 9: Portfolio Hedge (Javier Castellano/Chad Brown) was sent out from the far outside 13 hole and won for big-time owners Klaravich Stables despite last out in November 2019. Much was riding on the final race as potential payouts indicated:

  • Pick 6: Over than $908,000 was added to the pool.
  • John Velazquez, who has been serving a 3-day suspension for a riding infraction at Santa Anita in March, is headed to Europe where he will ride at Royal Ascot next week.
  • Handle: $9.8 million.
Monmouth (New Jersey):
  • Jose Ferrer, at the age of 57, leads the meet with nine wins.
  • Paco Lopez, who began the meet suspended for a riding infraction elsewhere, has eight wins and a blistering 40%.
Pimlico (Maryland):
  • Rained out: The first two races were held but due to sloppy track conditions and the threat of additional rain to what had occurred, race day was canceled.
  • Rainbow Six Carryover: $975,000 which is or near an all-time state record.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Mark Casse won with his lone starter. He is on fire this year with 2-year-olds, hitting at a 29% clip at all tracks but doing fine work in south Florida. He is 17% lifetime with babies, a +12% in 2021.
Churchill (Kentucky):
  • Chalk bit the dust: Favorites won once in nine races.
  • Race 5: The $.50 Pick 5 paid over $65,000.
  • Race 9: The $.50 Pick 5 paid over $42,000.
  • Mitchell Murrill has won seven times on 13 mounts at the track this month. He is a remarkable 9 7-1-1 for Chris Hartman in that time.
  • Schedule: Churchill is open until June 26. Ellis Park operates June 27 through Sept. 4.
Santa Anita (California):
  • Handle: $6.6 million.
