Canterbury Park (Minnesota):
  • Opening day: The meet closes September 16.
  • Handle: $2 million approximately.
  • Race 5: Papa Rizzo (Quincy Hamilton/Joe Roberts) rang up the board at 37-to-1 as the second longest shot in a field of twelve. The payout led to some remarkable exotics including a $.10 super for over $7,200.
  • Race 7: The $.50 Pick 3 paid over $4,400.

Things are heating up in Florida with sports betting and casinos especially the Seminole Indians. I will check to see if this affects Hialeah Park. It does involve Florida's established decoupling laws. Gulf and Tampa will be unaffected in terms of horse racing itself but are involved secondarily.

Multi billions on the line.

Auburn, Maine
What will run in Maine in 2021? Two harness tracks?
Hollywood Casino Bangor has always been around the harness scene it's just not as publicized as much as Scarborough was the last 7 decades and the transition over to FTC/Cumberland Raceway....

not everything revolves around these two here state-side, some still use Plainridge in Mass which grew out of Suffolk Downs

Here is a possible answer regarding Hialeah, a track which DOES NOT run T-breds. We can dream a little dream that Gulfstream Park (Owned by The Stronach Group) would operate a T-bred meet at Hialeah similar to the now completed agreement at Calder (owned by Churchill Downs) under the brand name Gulfstream Park West.

Hialeah was owned by John Brunetti, Sr. who passed away in 2018 but now is under the guidance of his two sons. The track, once considered by many as the most beautiful track in America, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (by edict worthy of preservation; tax incentives) in the USA. Hialeah has a casino as of 2013 and now does not need to operate quarter horses in order to keep its casino permit.

As of now, Gulfstream could expand its already lengthy racing schedule in terms of 52 weeks but perhaps reduce which days of the week the track operates.

Hialeah isn't geographically as close to Gulfstream as GPW/Calder -- those two were about 10 miles apart. GPW/Calder will not conduct live horse racing anymore and instead instituted Jai Alai.

Gulf and Hialeah were once at their own odds over racing dates. Any chance the two groups can meet is easier said than done but ... Start the ball rolling. A short meet in the fall at Hialeah to replace GPW/Calder and offer the main Gulfstream track time off is on the minds of many. Sentimental dreamers perhaps but maybe worth it.

Possible answer

Florida Legislature Hands Sports Betting To Seminoles, Permits Non-Thoroughbred Tracks To Decouple From Gaming - Horse Racing News | Paulick Report

On the final day of a special session, Florida legislators on Wednesday approved three separate gambling measures that will strengthen the Seminole tribe's dominant position in the gambling market, allow non-Thoroughbred pari-mutuel facilities to decouple casinos and card rooms from their racing and jai-alai operations, and create a five-member Gaming Commission that will replace the state's Division of Pari-Mutuel Wagering.

----------------------

The decoupling bill likely will end live racing at South Florida's Pompano Park, the state's only harness track that opened in 1964 and is now known as Isle Casino Pompano, a Caesars Entertainment property. A last-minute amendment in the Florida House version of the bill to exempt harness racing from the decoupling law was stripped in the final version that passed the Senate by a 39-0 vote and the House in a 73-43 vote.

Hialeah Park may also have seen its last race. The historic track that once hosted South Florida's best winter Thoroughbred meet has been operating its casino since 2010 in connection with a Quarter Horse permit that began with competitive racing sanctioned by the Florida Quarter Horse Association. Those races were replaced by match races that were run so that Hialeah fulfilled its casino license obligation to conduct races as defined by Florida statute. That will no longer be necessary.

A smaller track but Lethbridge Rocky Mountain Turf Club (Alberta) plans to open this weekend after a cancellation last weekend. Entries can be found on Equibase. The track streams on its website.

I just witnessed one of the great miracles in New York racing. A horse ridden by Irad Ortiz was DQ'd. I didn't benefit from it, but still.

It took them about 5 minutes to make the call. If Chris Landeros had been riding it, then it would have taken the stewards about 22 seconds:laugh:

Updates in Canada (updated May 20):

WOODBINE (ON): Much delayed opening day is now expected June 18. The update today seemed promising. Standardbred season at Woodbine Mohawk Park will resume on June 14. There is a chance that opening days at both facilities could be earlier based on government restrictions being removed. The T-bred track was to open April 17.

FORT ERIE (ON): Opening date is expected June 15 based on government allowances. The track was to open June 1.

ASSINIBOIA (MB): has postponed opening day to May 24.

LETHBRIDGE (AB): has a scheduled opening day of May 22.

CENTURY DOWNS (AB): will conduct harness racing but not thoroughbreds in 2021.

CENTURY MILE (AB): opened May 21.

HASTINGS (BC): opened May 17.

Monmouth is extremely close to becoming the first track in the U.S. to offer fixed-odds wagering. It passed the state legislature and must pass the state senate and eventually the governor's signing. With fixed odds rather than parimutuel betting, the ticket holder receives the set of odds made at the time of the bet as opposed to the traditional custom of post time odds. You bet at 7-to- 1, you get 7-to-1. In many other jurisdictions, this is how wagering is done. It likely will be limited to in-state and Monmouth rather than other tracks from how I understand the initial report. Also, July 17 and the Haskell is the target date though some hold out the hope of it being offered prior. It would seem such a drastic change in historic betting could be complicated on a day of such importance as the Haskell. But in any event, we'll see how popular the bet becomes.

Belmont (NY):
  • Handle: $8 million.
  • Race 7: Voice of Spring (Jose Lezcano/Linda Rice) gave the suspended trainer a win. Rice will appeal the ruling from earlier this week and is allowed to enter horses in her name at this time since the suspension has yet to officially begin. The suspension is three years and in large part due to receiving advanced notices on races. Rice has an established background as part of an extensive racing family. Depending on the stipulations of the suspension, she could be barred from all sorts of racing activity; otherwise, perhaps she could take part in roles such as pinhooking if the suspension rules her off the track but not in other aspects of the sport.
  • Race 9: The $1 Pick 6 paid over $34,000.
  • John Velazquez has won 8 of his past 17 rides.
  • John Velazquez-Wesley Ward have won six of their past seven as a team.
  • Manny Franco (25 wins) leads all jockeys this meet with Irad Ortiz, Jr. (24) his closest challenger.
  • Chad Brown (16 wins) and Christophe Clement (15 wins) are 1-2 among all trainers this meet.
Pimlico (MD):
  • Victor Carrasco-Michael Trombetta teamed three times and each won.
  • Race 7: Damian Towler, the winning trainer, entered a horse for the fifth time and earned his first win. The winning horse was foaled in South Carolina.

  • Handle: $2.8 million.
  • Pick 6: The jackpot will start at more than $625,000 as Saturday approaches. That is the biggest in state history. A great deal of positive news for racing in Maryland the past ten days or so.
Gulfstream (FL):
  • Handle: $4.6 million.
Churchill Downs (KY):
  • Race 3: Calvin Borel-Renay Borel combined to win. The trainer took out her license in 2019 and is the jockey's wife.
  • Tyler Gaffalione rode a natural hat trick. He leads the meet with 18 wins.
Santa Anita (CA):
  • Handle: $6.1 million.
  • George Papaprodromou entered two races and won both.
  • Is Jessica Pyfer the early leading candidate for Apprentice of the Year in North America? She's up there and won again today.

Belmont (New York):
  • Handle: $15.7 million.
  • Race 9: Get Smokin (Junior Alvarado/Thomas Bush) wired the field in winning the $100,000 Seek Again Stakes at 4-to-1.

  • Riders winning multiple times: Jose Ortiz (3 wins), Irad Ortiz, Jr. (2), Joel Rosario (2) and Kendrick Carmouche (2) won nine of the ten races.
  • Junior Alvarado won the feature race and also placed with 43-to-1 and 20-to-1 shots.
Pimlico (Maryland):
  • Race 6: Marvella Nasty (Sheldon Russell/Brittany Russell) had an adventurous trip as the hubby-wife team scored in their lone connection of the day. The winner paid a healthy $21.60. The horse seemed out of contention. Then shake, rattle and roll. What a finish!

  • Race 9: The lone first-time starter won at 9-to-1 in a field of nine.
  • J.D. Acosta rode a natural hat trick, the third of those wins coming via DQ.
  • Pick 6 for Sunday: A Maryland state-record jackpot carryover of $670,306.25.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Handle: $11.3 million.
Churchill Downs (Kentucky):
  • Tyler Gaffalione had his second straight 3-win day.
  • Race 5: Sconsin (Tyler Gaffalione/Greg Foley) won the $150,000 Grade 3 Winning Colors Stakes. She likes the track as her record indicates. She has won three of five at CD among her 4-for-12 lifetime win record.
  • Card: Seven of the 11 races held purses of $100,000+ and Fox Sports 2 broadcast the night card.
Santa Anita (California):
  • Handle: Exceeded $10 million.
  • Race 7: Going Global (Flavien Prat/Phil D'Amato) romped in the $100,000 Grade 3 Honeymoon Stakes.
  • Race 2: As Time Goes By (Mike Smith/Bob Baffert) won the Grade 2 $200,000 Santa Maria Stakes by a flared nostril. Baffert last won on May 8, snapping a string of eight losses since that most recent victory.

Belmont (New York):
  • Handle: Roughly $9.5 million.
  • Twice as nice: Junior Alvarado, Javier Castellano and Jose Ortiz each won twice while trainer Christophe Clement continues being hot on turf with two more wins. He is tied with Chad Brown for most raining wins at the meet.
  • Race 3: Not That Brady (Rigo Sarmiento/Lenin Cruz) won at 9-to-1. The jockey rode a few years back in south Florida but recently had been riding at Assiniboia in Manitoba and Century Mile in Alberta among other spots. The trainer won for the first time in his career with his 11th starter. Needless to say, many pundits were intrigued by the duo who are originally from Venezuela.

  • Race 8: Call Me Love (Junior Alvarado/Christophe Clement) won the biggest purse of the day at $96,000 in what was one of the most exciting races of the afternoon. Alvarado had a good weekend.
BEL_20210523_8_1.jpg
Pimlico (Maryland):
  • Race 9: Half the field of six was alive to bring down the record jackpot which reached $766,000. The 'pot lives for another day, however and will grow with the next card. More than $19,000 to all winners.
  • Race 7: Sailingotthewind (Sheldon Russell/Brittany Russell) put on a show and wired the field at 15-to-1. The husband-wife duo continues to shine. The trainer smiled broadly with their child in hand. Today, they went 3 1-0-1 as a team.

  • Race 5: A $100.80 sprung an upset.
  • Friday's card: The Pick 6 will begin at $708,000+ and should set another starts record for highest jackpot.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Race 9: Luca Panici won for the first time since January 29. He had an extensive rehabilitation recovery from injury for much of that time.
  • Race 3: Jonathan Gonzales rode the winner, his first victory since December 2019. He was sidelined by injury for a portion of that time and rode infrequently since.
  • Massachusetts trainers: Leon McKanas and Kathy Ritvo were among the winning trainers. McKanas, who once appeared on the reality show Survivor, won for the second time with his 33rd starter in 2021. M.C. Reardon, sent out a a 63-to-1 starter that placed. It was the 8th time she hit the board the past two years with 75 sent. All three were born in Massachusetts and have connections to the now shuttered Suffolk Downs.
  • Handle: $8.9 million.
Churchill (Kentucky):
  • Tyler Gaffalione extended his meet lead to five with a 2-win day. He has turned into arguably Kentucky's most successful rider the past handful of years.
Santa Anita (California):
  • Race 7: Hudson Ridge (Abel Cedillo/Bob Baffert), a maiden out for the fifth time, won the $100,000 Cinema Stakes as the second longest shot on the board (5-to-1) in a field of five. It was his first black type race after four MSW losses.

Monmouth Park (NJ)

  • Opening day in history: July 30, 1870
  • 2021 Dates: May 28 - September 26
  • Haskell Stakes: July 18, 2021
  • Site: Oceanport, New Jersey
  • No whip: The track is using a no-whip rule, except for safety, to the chagrin of many riders. Some have expressed dissatisfaction and opted not to take counts. Various updates:
    • Jersey Joe Bravo has been outspoken and will not ride at his native track. He likely will ride at other mid-Atlantic tracks including Delaware.
    • Dylan Davis, who had been in New York prior to a broken collarbone in March, will return and ride at Monmouth. The jockeys' colony at NYRA tracks is elite especially this time of the year.
    • Jorge Vargas, Jr. was injured in the same race as Dylan Davis and has not fully recovered.
    • Antonio Gallardo refused to ride at Monmouth this weekend and if he changes his mind would have to face a hearing.
  • Suspended: Paco Lopez and Ferrin Peterson begin the meet suspended for riding infractions elsewhere. Lopez will ride at Monmouth at some point this meet and will be among the favorites to capture the riders' title. Nik Juarez will serve a suspension in September but be allowed to ride as this meet starts.
  • Fixed odds: Could be implemented during this meet. ( New Jersey Assembly Advances Fixed-Odds Wagering Bill - BloodHorse.)
