If it's a 2015 5th rounder. That gives us 9 picks this draft.
It's a 2016 5th
We have 8 picks this summer, and 10 in 2016

Why take Brewer? Does he really help, or hinder, the tank?
Why didn't we just keep Holzer?
How does a 5th round pick help our future?
Brewer is a winner. Olympic Gold Medalist in 2002. What a steal!!!

Did you forget this?
Holzer worked his way up in this organization, played tough, stuck up for teammates and was a solid 3rd pairing guy so it makes sense to trade him for another 50 year old has-been.
At least Brewer is not coming off 2 broken legs.
That's the point. Here we have a guy we drafted, and, spent time and effort developing, who is also big and tough, and we trade him! These are the type of players we should be keeping IMHO. Watch, at some point we'll make a trade, burning assets, to acquire this type of player at a later date!
Maybe we can eventually turn that pick into somebody good enough to play with the Marlies.

That is a very good point that is getting overlooked, in my opinion.
Maybe Brewer will actually be good for this team, as far as morale and the give-a-spit meter are concerned.

Sorry to cya go Holz - you were our best d-man with no offensive touch - none of our remaining dmen have any offensive freakin' touch this year but at least you could play DEFENSE! a forgotten art in the age of the floating rushing d-man - ah well - I enjoyed watching you... now back to reality.
Thank you for that and good luck out west.
Best part is the initial report of a prospect and. Then turns out to be a 38 year old
Often tell this story, I saw Holzer in person, and he is tall and imposing. Much bigger in person than he looks on the ice.
Why in the **** would they trade him? he was one of the few guys that played the right way! This team is no better off with Brendan Shanahan at the helm.
Holzer was bad. Like... really bad.
There's no way he should be anywhere near an NHL team. Even though it's a low pick, not really sure what Anaheim were thinking.
There's been some Dmen on waivers the last few days (including Aulie today) who are as good, if not better than Holzer. Why not just pick one of them up?
Anyway - creative trade for the Leafs; pretty much buy a 5th round pick.
