I've been wondering what's happened to DYG. It is officially done?

Seems like all these former niche decentralized forums have been falling like flies or being bought up by conglomerates. As the game further propels itself into the mainstream, the old chat halls are being renovated with grant money from McDonald's, Bud Light, and Toyota.

It's less about the NHL going mainstream and more about technology making websites and forums obsolete. HFBoards itself will only last so much longer.

I didn't post as much on Hockeyfights.com--at least not this decade--but I joined Fried Chicken back in like 1998-99 and was very active. Used to do a Kings tape and was a pretty active VHS trader for awhile.

I'm only 39 but I'm a dinosaur now when it comes to the hockey I like. I'm just glad I got in on the end of the tape trading era before the internet kind of made it obsolete. As for the site changing and the forum being shut down, it was only a matter of time in this climate: especially once it had some notoriety. A place like FC's in the late 90's/early 00's was real underground but the introduction of video being readily available took it from the underground: a site glorifying hockey fighting can't be on the League's radar these days.

At this point, I'm just wondering why I can see a fight the same night it happens if I go to the site but the YT channel doesn't seem to update very much at all. I had stopped going to the forum and was simply waiting a week or so to go to the YT channel and then watch a bunch of fights in a row. Am I doing something wrong or is the channel just not being updated like the actual website?

I was posting on hockeyfights.com since 02 or 03. It used to be a site I’d go on daily but hadn’t been able to log on for the last year or so. It was my introduction to online forums.

Used to be a great site with a lot of guys who just loved old school rough and tumble hockey. I guess it’s demise was pretty inevitable

Fried Chickens has been gone for a long time now. That site was excellent. Great posters, with quite a few NHL/AHL'ers that stopped by as well.

Drop your gloves was really great site to navigate through. Click the player and everything was right there.

Sad to see Hockeyfights go as well. Either the end of an era. Or...Opportunity for someone to start a new one. By the amount of members each had i would bet someone starts a new one sooner or later.

Given the direction hockey as a whole is moving towards there's no way another site like that is starting up

Sad. The Fried Chicken hockey site was how I got into hockey fights and learning about some of the great enforcers from back in the day. Dropyourgloves was like a vast library with a ridiculous wealth of fight footage. Not sure if the moderators didn't want to maintain the sites anymore or if the lack of modern day fights was the reason they gave up.

Just a random observation, I have a friend *cough* who was watching the TV series Good Wife and there was a lawsuit against a hockey league due to concussion issues. The fact that the hockey league cooperated with a private web site showing video of hockey fights was used as evidence for the league promoting the violence.

These series usually just copy things from ‘real life’. Do we know if any of those arguments have been brought up in the ongoing NHL lawsuits?

Most likely explanation is what they said in their blurb; Site hits and ad hits went down while the cost of hosting the site stayed the same (I havent hosted anything that big, but Id guess youd pay the hosting service by tiers of bandwidth & hits per month. They most likely had to make a decision on whether they wanted to start running the site at a loss or simply shut down. The sudden cutoff with no warning was to avoid a spike of traffic from users checking out the site (and possibly archiving parts of it) which would push them even deeper into the red.

poor Vodkafish, all his hard work...

I posted on there starting in the late 90's. Traded for fight tapes, wrote the odd fight recap. Bummer. Hopefully the player database migrates somewhere, that was a great resource.

Yeah that name rings a bell.

I think I would have been there like 98 onward, visiting actively for like 10 years and then fizzling out around 2010. I didn't post a ton but I think I got up over 500 posts kind of thing, 499 of them probably defending Chris Neil from all the posters who called him a 'spot picker'. haha

I find it extremely unlikely hfboards will ever go away.

all websites have a life expectancy

without getting into too much detail (mostly because I only got one side of the story)

this site does not make a lot money, with more and more people using adblocker and other things, unless more posters become sponsors this site will collapse under its own weight

I haven't posted in awhile but I noticed here people mentioning the name "chilly." I was on the hockeyfights.com forums for awhile but that guy was such a pain in the ass that I only went on the site for news and fight videos. I wonder if him being a jerk to people caused the hockey fights forum to close.

Chilly was an idiot. @vandymeer13 used to get in fights with him all the time. The reason the forums closed was because Vodkafish sold the site to nationdan in December of 2018. He completely overhauled the site, got rid of half of the forums, and promised upgrades that never got done. When the overhaul happened, half of the posters left and never came back. There was only four or five people (including me) consistently commenting when the forums closed.
