Hockey cards are not good investments. You will never make money off cards in the long run.
That statement is exactly what is wrong with collecting cards today. It's no longer a hobby, it's an investment. A pack of nine cards is four bucks. I remember when a pack of 12 was two bucks.

When I collected, it was all about the thrill of ripping open a pack and getting your favourite player. Now, it's all about seeing how much money the card is worth, and collecting all of the "inserts," which used to be very rare.

Sigh. I miss the day when a set used to be 750 cards.

Exactly. If I wanted an investment I'd go buy some stocks or an RRSP.

I haven't collected hockey cards in ten years. And even then I was just a kid.

So what do I need to know?

I've recently gotted sucked into collecting Hockey cards. If you just want to collect a set then go with UD Victory. The set is not hard to complete and if you buy a box you might get the full set. They are about $1-$1.25 a pack but there are no Crosby or Ovechkin cards and there is not alot of chance of getting rarer or special cards. But it is much cheaper and still fun to collect, plus there is at least some chance of getting special cards.

If you don't care if you get the full set or not and just want to buy a few packs for fun to see who you get, go with Upperdeck regular set or Black Diamond. But it may cost you $4-7 a pack.

I just got a box of heads up sweater ed. and I got a Kovalchuk Jersey replica... It's hella cool, came on a little statue. And I also got another box of heads up (different year) and got a Patrick Roy bobblehead ltd./1000.

the kovalchuk is booked at 60$ and teh Roy@100$ I'd love to sell them since I bought the boxes for the cards :joker:

I hate inserts. My favourites are Canuck and Goalie base cards (and rookies)

Upper Deck SPX is coming out soon(Jan 18th) and it could be the product of the year. There are nice looking cards to.
http://us.st11.yimg.com/store1.yimg.com/I/dcscards_1877_247469457
You get 18 packs and 4 cards per pack. Price is around $140-160 US?

Theres also Upper Deck Artifacts. Lots of ppl are liking this product. Many ppl are pulling nice low numbered cards. I havn't pulled any mojo cards in 10 boxes but I do still have 5 more boxes on hold(I bought a case). I have gotten 3 cards #ed to 10. Rookie cards are redemptions unfortunetly.
You get 10 packs and 4 cards per pack. Price anywhere from $110-135 US. Prices went up after it started selling like crazy. That could happen to SPX.

Upper Deck Black Diamond. Won't say much but there have been cases where the cards have been damaged. UD will/maybe replace them but may take a long time to get it back.
24 packs, 5 cards per pack. Anywhere from $113/140 US.

UD Trilogy came out. Higher end product. Its a hit or miss. Some guy bought a case and didn't get many great cards. There are players like Weiss and Riberio in the set which maybe bad because your spending lots of $$ and to get a common card might suck unless your a team collector or a collector of those players. But there have been some nice pulls as well.
Example of a card you may get.

9 packs, 5 cards per pack. prices from 160/200US.

UD MVP comes out on jan 4th. A cheap set. If your looking to make $ of these then don't buy but if your buying to collect and to have fun, worth buying.

24 packs, 8 cards per pack. $40 to 50 a box US.

All prices was from a store website and it was there price range. Each store varies.

One more thing. If your buying at Toys R us, 7 Eleven, Target, or Wal Mart, etc don't buy packs unless its from a unopened box. There are ppl who pack search which basically means you could tell if the pack is good or not(there are decoy cards but doesn't work well because you could weigh them) Also some sets has a pattern where the good cards are located. Store like those don't care if ppl do that as long as they are buying the packs. Buying at Card shops maybe better because some store owners will not allow customers to pack search. Buying packs will not guarantee a jsy/rookie/ or a auto card. Buying a box will have those cards. Some averages two jsy cards per box. Watch out on ebay, some packs are sold resealed, aka the seller opened it and took out a good card and resealed them and some cards are fake. Go to shows, better to buy a specific card compared to gambling on a box. Although it is much funner to open a box.

I bought a second box of Black Diamond and it was exactly the same as my first box, well almost exactly the same. Every single, double and triple was the same as in the other box and I got an autograph card of Antoine Vermette - The exact same one as in the first box I bought. The only differences was I got 2 different jersey's and 2 different quads. That sucks since I am trying to complete the set and I now have a ton of duplicate double and triples. Anyone else find this in boxes they opened? 4 different cards in a whole box isn't very good.

I got back into cards after purchasing the Thornton rookie card (team Canada sweater) for $40CDN 3 years ago. Now I just look for certain players whereas prior to the Thornton card I sought complete sets. The 89 Opeechee is still a favourite.

Im not into card collecting at all, but my wife bought me a UD Black Diamond box, I havent finished opening all the packs yet (sure lots of fun to do), but with 2/3 of the packs opened I have a Lundqvist, Brule, and Crosby (numbered? "Quad diamond" whatever that means) seems like a pretty good box. I actually enjoy all the other players as well, but I was surprised that I got the Crosby.

I don't think the beckett has prices for the new UD yet but the Crosby is going for $150-200.
The Horton is going for $8Low- $20 high in last months beckett. It was 16 in the top 20 hot singles.

Finished opening my box, I got 4 rookies, Campoli, Lundqvist, Brule, and a Crosby "Quad Diamond Ruby Parallel" numbered XX of 100. Other notable cards were the Havlat autographed card, Modano game used jersey card, and a Sakic game used Sakic card. But I really just enjoyed all the cards, the only thing I hated were the duplicates :).

not bad at all.. you lucky _____ ;)

I bought a trilogy pack today.. damn expensive.. 35$ canadian. anyway.. i caught Campoli RC /999 and a Spezza Game Jersey other than that regular Forsberg card.
I would have prefered Crosby instead of Campoli but eh.. :P i bought Perezhogin YG RC too.. because he is a hab and potential star.. also i bough Parize Quad Diamond 25$ but i have a feeling next year or later he will regain his scoring touch.

Could someone please tell me what a good box of hockey cards would be? I prefer Upper deck, but I have been out of the loop for about 10 years now. Please give me some suggestions and why you feel that is the set to go with. Thanks.

Don't buy a box of anything. Find a well-stocked card store and buy the singles of players you like. I could never justify $30 - $100 for a box of cards where I get tons of doubles and players I don't want. I spend $10 - $20 on singles and get everything I do want.

I have heard good things about ebay but I have never used it. I just have some good card stores that I frequent to get my singles.
