Yea we overpaid our players. We have the worst signed core contracts in the league for any playoff team.

Huge AAV, crazy salaries, insane signing bonuses, short term, and the NMCs coming up for MM and AM in their final years of their deals.

With our core 4 all underproducing on their contracts in the playoffs

I'm sure mlse is starting to get tired of shelling out millions so kid Kyle can learn on the job.

What a bad hire that has turned out to be.

Would actually be interested to get a breakdown on the Dubas bill including all the salary retention, LTIR, fired coaches and other expenses beyond the salary cap since he started as GM.

Isn't the whole point of analytics (a la Moneyball) based on the premise of winning more while spending less dollars?

The worst one was Marners, you'd figure the hometown boy would be willing to take a hometown discount instead of taking Dubas to the cleaners. A 8-9 million dollar contract could have done wonders for the team. He plays for the leafs, he's gonna have endorsement deals matter what. I still think hes a good player, but the teams depth is just not there.

Another 2-3 million could have really helped depth wise. Instead of Mikheyev and Engvall you could have had 2 bottom 6ers at around 2.5-3 million each instead of those plugs.

don't worry boys, we didn't sign them for their abilities today, rather their future abilities.

they are going to be awesome, don't worry. Dubas understands that. He's playing 4d chess when everyone else is playing checkers.

Don't worry, their future abilities will come up again in a few years when they become UFAs...:sarcasm:

JT at 7 is pathetic , you'd think he'd set a precedent for the kids and take a reasonable deal for his worth which would have been at tops 9m per but he had to get the ball rolling by giving it to Dubas hard .

Tavares was a UFA and took a discount to sign with the Leafs...it's the RFAs that are greedy...Matthews was comparing himself to McDavid in terms of salary, and Marner thinks he should be paid like Matthews.

These guys are for sure gonna walk as FA's. Does anyone think Marner and Matthews are gonna resign here at reasonable rates? Does anyone think we will accomplish anything for the duration of their contracts?

$11 million is a discount when other teams were willing to pay more...Tavares was one of the highest profile UFAs to ever hit free agency and he was highly sought after...even if Tavares signed for $9 million, Matthews would still want McDavid money...in fact Matthews is paid more than McDavid on a prorated basis if you account for the fact that he only signed 5 years...his contract is outrageous...Matthews and McDavid share the same agency, and there were talks about McDavid giving the Oilers a discount and Matthews shouldn't make that "mistake"...it was during an interview with his agent...it's Matthews and Marner who are the greedy guys...when they asked for the moon as RFAs, you wonder what they would be asking for when they become UFAs...greedy ba5tards.

1 other team was rumored to have offered more and it was only a rumor because it was never confirmed and there's no way Boston and Tampa were offering anywhere near what he signed for

also a discount implies he took less than he was worth not that he may have taken a lower overpayment

and if you want to go by rumors then Mathews took an even bigger discount since the rumor floated about a month after he signed was the broke ass yotes were going to offer 16m per , lol

Marner also floated he could have signed an offer sheet for more but no one believes him so why are M and M being greedy and not Johnny Teflon ?

and at the end of the day Tavares is by far the most overpaid of the 3 based on performance and the one Dubas has to find a way to trade to get this ship pointed back in the right direction

Realistically, I think Matthews got about 700k too much and Marner got about 1.3 million. 11.0 and 9.5 should have been the price tags at the time, IMO. That's 2.0 million, combined with the expected cap increase (which Covid-19 ruined) would have gone a long way towards shoring up the depth of the forward group.

I thought it was to tell you that you should have scored more goals than you did, but were just unlucky.

They signed those contracts before a pandemic.
Poor excuse. The cap was flat in 09 because of the world financial crisis. It’s ignorant to assume there would never be tough times ahead. Jeff Bezos and Warren Buffet both held records amount of cash because there was every indicator of a massive recession coming. They liquidated stocks.

11.0 x 8 though
9.5 x 6

Maybe if they both signed for max term. But they didn't
