How in the world is Couturier beating out Kopitar

Kopitar being very bad last season aside (his relative offensive numbers were negative on the Kings of all teams as well, which is scary), Couturier has one of, if not the best, on-ice impact in the league, every Flyers player became much better when playing with him, and he's one of the best two-way centers in the league. He should be among the next few votes here.

Is there any other evidence besides this one chart? The entire Kings' team was god awful last year.

People here really live in the past. Kopitar and Backstrom should be nowhere near this spot. Couturier does pretty much everything better than them at this point in time.

Is one year removed from a 92 point selke season really living in the past?

Yes that’s in the past. He is gonna be 32 when the season starts so expecting him to get back to his old level is a bit ridiculous.

And he definitely didn’t deserve the Selke that year but sadly the award is all about reputation and point totals.

Don't you think last year carries a bit more weight than the previous year? It's a possibility that Kopitar is starting to decline, while Couturier is at his peak

Same thing was said about Crosby after his 89 point season. "He's declining", "he'll never score 100 points again", "he's close to being done as a top 5 center", etc. He rebounded with a 100 point season, and finished 2nd in Hart voting and 4th in Selke voting, and was named 2nd team all-star center.

I'm willing to give Kopitar the benefit of the doubt until he has more than 1 season to suggest he's declining.

nobody is saying there can never be exceptions, but people aren't crazy to pick the 26 (27 in December) year old who was better than a guy who's turning 32. Even if you want to give Kopitar the benefit of the doubt and predict he'll bounce back, Couturier is still a good pick provided he doesn't regress
