Has There Always Been This Much Focus On the Fans?

It's not even just on here, it seems like every time you watch post game interviews the players are going out of their way to try to hype up their fanbase and the impact they will have on any particular game.

It feels like it's pretty much turned into a you-know-what measuring contest among the teams... like playing solid hockey just isn't good enough anymore if your fanbase can't bring it.

Is it just a case of the media trying to find a way to get people more emotionally involved? Has it always been like this?

Pretty sure it's your last point - players only react to whatever served to them by the media, it's not like they're coming up with these thoughts on their own!

Yeah with social media now people can tweet their team, many players on that team, and vice versa. Fans and teams now have ways to be closer to each other. Thanking the fans is just an extension of the way forms of media have gone.

It's a big year for the fans. Calgary back in the playoffs after a long drought, NYI playing their last games in Nassau Coliseum and of course wild Winnipeg.

I've always noticed players thanking the fans in the playoffs. It has been ramped up to some degree since the various lockouts though

There are some passionate fans this year. I'm not going to deny that the enthusiasm of the Jets fans was a major talking point of the Ducks/Jets series.

Then you have fans possibly visiting their arena for the last time, in Nassau.

Sadly there has also been some ugly stories of fan fights at games, which also has been touched upon.

I'm gonna say, it's an exceptional year for fans.

If you get the Fans thinking they matter, then they buy more tickets and watch more games. Better ratings and more revenue. Its business.

I'm starting to cringe every time someone starts talking about the fans. Reminds me of the winter classics when the whole all everyone talks about is the experience and how much fun the fans are having. I get the NHL has league wide things they want to push, just don't make it so obvious.

Nah, life use to be simple. Now everyone is a critic about everything; hockey included - The Internet.

Agreed. This seems like more of a PR decision and concerted effort by the NHL.

The truth is, if there are 20,000 people yelling for you, or 20,000 people yelling against you, either way you can't hear your teammates lol.

it's pretty annoying it seems like some fans are more interested in getting themselves in the spotlight than their team winning

It's pretty annoying that anybody thinks that any fans behave like this. Here is a hint no fans are more interested in getting into the spotlight over their team winning. That's ridiculous.
