We were tricked by those two into thinking we were a small market and could never afford the payroll like the mighty Red Wings or Rangers were willing to spend. Every contract situation was the same thing.

They were "saving hockey". They were, and are, con men.

Loyal fanbase, sell out every game-building is too old and too small to spend like a big market team (Boston apparently was Des Moines, Iowa)
New building-will take years to see a profit and we can spend money on the team
Season ticket base drops to 3,000, attendance under 8,000 many nights-s*** we better spend some money.
