Bruins were 4th in GA last year but 15th in goals for. They are 2nd in GF this year with a new approach to the offense. D getting involved way more on the breakout moving up the ice instead of the weak side D hanging back. D being encouraged to jump into the play more in the o-zone (even guys like Carlo!). More attention on shot quality instead of "pucks on net". Ullmark's play has certainly helped them not give up more despite being more aggressive (a lot more odd man rushes allowed now), but Montgomery has changed much of how the Bruins play with the puck for the extreme better. And even Montgomery realizing that having the goalie that is best all time in shootouts by save % (who knew?!) might be able to handle some more odd man rushes was a smart move.
Montgomery gets the award so far with their insane record, and I think it's clear they needed to move on from Cassidy and whatever was going on in that room.
That said, no coach in the league has had more of an impact on their respective team than Bowness this year.
Just like McDavid is the clear guy to win the Hart at this point, so is Montgomery to Jack Adams. Their lead over the runner-up (in scoring, or team standings) is so substantial that you cannot ignore it.
Bowness is a runner-up no doubt. Keefe probably won't get nominated, because as we all know the Jack Adams is not usually (as in never) given to a coach who has done good job for multiple years on a top team. Look at Jon Cooper. He has been nominated. Never won it.
