Believe it or not, Columbus has actually done a good job finding Russian talent in the later rounds. Their problem has been development, and that nobody wants to play for them. Zherdev and Filatov were not picks you needed a Russian specialist scout for, they were consensus picks that failed to pan out like the majority of Columbus draft picks.

This is nothing but a good, the more scouts the better. Bergevin has already increased the size of our scouting staff elsewhere, it was only time he added another name in Europe; when you have as many resources as the Habs do, there's no reason to have 2 guys (one of whom is a Finland specialist) cover all of Europe. I actually thought we needed a Russian-focused scout considering Rockstrom's focus is Sweden.

Wasnt the Habs russian scout fired by Gauthier with a bunch of other scouts in a huge scout clearance last year or in 2010?

Well according to the official website the only two European scouts we have left are Laine and Rockstrom. There's no reason to have Rockstrom cover all of Europe.

I'd like a scout to cover Switzerland-Austria-Czech Rep-Slovakia and leave Rockstrom with Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Germany.

Kind of off-topic, but I'm encouraged by the 2 picks from Sweden last draft. Seems like fertile ground the Habs haven't picked from much in over a decade+.

I think the Rockstrom hire a few years ago was a sign of a renewed focus on Sweden, which is a good thing. After all, this is one of the guys involved in two of the greatest ever draft picks from Sweden, Lidstrom and Lundqvist.

He's also the guy doing professional scouting in Europe, which got us guys like Engqvist, Nygren and Diaz. Rockstrom is pretty good, but I agree that some help in Russia/eastern Europe could be good.

More is better and if one of our 2nd round picks are due to the diligence of Telepin then all is great.To draft an "Elite Forward"with a 2nd or later pick,genius or Priceless.

The conditions that created the Datsyuk situation don't exist any more.

With that said, adding more people to the scouting team is never a bad thing, after all knowledge is power and in a situation like the draft you can be pretty sure that it'll be the most informed team that will come out on top.
