I assume he wants to be a starter eventually. He isn't going to play the rest of his prime years for the caps unless holtby gets dealt. Schneider, Talbot, Andersen are guys that wanted a bigger role.

ok, thats why grubauer wants to be traded. why do the caps trade him?

C'mon, man. You know full well the Caps are trading Grubauer for the cap space, and to make room for Samsonov, who already has his flights booked.

There are sound arguments to fluff up Grubauer's value, but that the Caps are better off just keeping him isn't one of them.

Because, if he's not happy and is unwilling to accept his role, the situation can sour. That's bad for the dressing room, and it's bad for his trade value.

And he'll just hold out and not sign. Teams aren't stupid and won't hold players back like that.

He had a lot more games under his belt showing he was a true # 1 keeper. Grubauer hasnt shown that yet. imo a 2nd and 4th at most.
Schneider had 98 games played when he was traded, Grubauer has 102. Schneider had never played more than 33 games in any season when he was traded, Grubauer played 35 this season. What exactly are you talking about?

 Caps/Wings haven't been in the same division since the 70's. Heck, we've been barely in the same conference since then.
Sorry confused the thread with another. Regardless, the Caps aren't going to trade Grubauer for less than value to any team IN or OUT of DIVISION. If Det offers a 2nd I think we can all move on, there's nothing to see here. Mrazek was traded for a 3rd + 4th, Grubauer is far more valuable. A 2nd means Det isn't interested.

And all were traded for more than has been offered here.

The season before Schneider got traded was the lockout shortened year. That season he was the Canucks starter while they tried and failed to unload Luongo. He played 30 of 48 games, which would adjust to around 51/52 out of a full 82 game season. That's the only real reason Schneider didn't play more than 33 in a season before the trade. He'd have more total games if it wasn't for that season as well. If you include playoffs however, Schneider edges out Grubauer in total games.

And I think that season is what Piper is alluding to as "showing he was a true #1". Schneider stole the starting job from Luongo in the 11/12 playoffs and was the Canucks legitimate starter for the next season.

The # of games are similar, but Grubauers NHL resume is different than Schnieders was at the time of the trade. Schneider was a legitimate starter where as Grubauer is in the Raanta/Talbot/Darling/etc. camp where he's been a great #2 that had a good run when his teams #1 got hurt or struggled, but has never entered an NHL season as a "starter".
