Gretzky. Mario was better - but Gretzky owns all the records and is greater.

Brett Hull, had probably the best scoring season and didn't fall off the cliff once goaltending and team defense got better the way Gretzky did.

Went with Hull. The 2 extra (retro) rockets over Wayne is more important than the raw goals total imo.

Gretzky is #1. His goal record would be untouchable if he didn't spend so much time setting up his team mates. Recency bias has Ovi in the top spot, which is a joke.

Players like Mario and Wayne should be either removed from the poll or acknowledged as the de facto greatest given the clear gap between them and the others in overall offensive production.

If he decided to setting up his teammates than he is not the best goal scorer.

nevermind he was shooting on guys who just stood there with newspapers on their legs with defensemen in front of them that smoked in between periods. worm burners were the one timers of the 80s

Always an ignorant argument. Scoring was easier in the 80s yeah, but Gretzky torched the league.

Gretzky had 1 rocket in his last 12 seasons. The guy was scoring against terrible goalies and the overall level of skill has gone up tremendously since then.

Also, lemieux has a higher gpg while dealing with cancer. He is a better goal scorer than Gretzky.

and ovi has torched his peers since he joined the league. he also did it without 37 hall of famers on his team. Backstrom, maybe, maybe gets in to the hall. Did gretz ever play with a joey crabb on his line or anyone close to that. Ovis has had quite a few questionable linemates over the years

Did you ever consider they became HOF players because they were on a team with Gretzky carrying the f*** out of them? Lmfao

Even if you think Mario Lemieux was the best goal scorer (he wasn't) - that isn't the question here. The question is greatest.

In his own era, Lemieux had neither the highest single season total (Gretzky) nor the highest adjusted season total (Hull). He only led the NHL 3 times. Gretzky's GPG was actually higher than Lemieux's through their peaks (roughly 500-600 games) - which were both in the ridiculously high scoring era.

Lemieux's career adjusted GPG is barely any higher than Ovie's, except Ovie sustained that pace for 300 more games and has already played many more games after turning 30 than Lemieux did. Ovie also trounced his own generation in goal scoring to a far superior degree.
