See. I like Geno.

But to be blind to the fact that Geno likes Putin - or thinking he only says he likes Putin because he has to is like having your blinders on. He has a photo on instagram with a group of friends wearing pro-Putin / pro-crimea tee shirts.

https://www.instagram.com/p/rsRz4AqjmR/

Geno is very patriotic (there're some other examples as well) - and we can disagree with his political leanings, but maybe when you're inundated with biased reports and news since childhood, you will have a different perspective. Just as US/UK media has been clear in their anti-Russia bias, Russia's is clearly the opposite.

Maybe that's why him and ovi didn't get along? :dunno:

You are totally crazy if you think a major Russian celebrity would ever speak out against Putin.

Speaking out against you're leader would be an act of treason. People go missing for anti-Putin speech in the media. He would put his family and friends in seriously jeopardy if he said or inferred anything that Putin was less of a man.

Russia isn't America. Your words get you in trouble over there.
Look I grew up in a communist country, seen it all so you don't have to tell me anything about that. I was there when it was really really tight, and I could have gotten in trouble for speaking up. You find your way to act agains totalitarism and nationalism, its mostly an uphill battle, but one that history and humanity will eventually judge every individual for. So no, you don't go around talk about "great leader" under any circumstencies. and Geno is still my favorite athlet, I just now question his inteligence....

To be fair, there is a ton of Russian nationalism and I doubt Geno pays much attention to politics. You could argue he should, but his response isn't all that surprising for a guy who has spent most of his adult life in Pittsburgh and loves his country.

And Harv's post above.

as a person that lost half of his family (literally butchered and burned) by a drunken bunches of nationalistic paramilitary criminals, you may than understand that I have a zero tolerance to anyone who cant'see beyond the ideology especially one that has nationalism in its core. and that is where I draw a line...

I'm so sorry to hear this. I completely understand why you'd be critical of Geno for his nationalism. Please know I wasn't defending him but just trying to explain why I think he feels that way. He comes to America as a 19 or 20 year old and lives in a hockey bubble for 9 months out of the year and then goes home to Russia for a few months, gets to hang out with Putin, etc. He doesn't experience life as an average Russian. That doesn't excuse his allegiance, which was your point.

Explain two things to me:

How is what Geno said nationalism?

What do you know about the life of an average Russian? My guess is close to nothing. My personal choice beween Russia and USA if I had to make ir right now would be Russia without hesitation and I don't have Malkin's salary. But you can hold on to the picture your propaganda presents you with.

1.There never was such a thing as a communist country. You question Malkin's intelligence, but you can't tell communism from socialism and we're not even talking about socialism in theory and the realty of certain socialist countries.

2.What does the history of socialist countries has to do with wht Malkin has to say about the president of the Russian Federation in 2015?

3."So no, you don't go around talk about "great leader" under any circumstencies."

A president is expected to be a great leader, no? That's what he's elected to do, to lead. Is Malkin allowed to have an opinion about his president? Is he allowed to find his president great? Is that not allowed in the happy free world?

And yes, Malkin is still an athlete. He's not a politician or sociologist. His view on Putin seems to be smarter than yours though.

What? I'm not even some crazed pro American. I really don't know why you got so offended by what I said. Sorry.

I dont want to comment much further because it will turn into a political discussion that isn't allowed on these boards.

You must be an expert about Russia. Tell us more about this awful place, please. How many people gone missing for anti-Putin speech in the media, who are they, what are their names?
Western propaganda is even worse than the Russian one.

Missing?
Have you heard that it was trial and sentence?
And, by the way, did you ever read what she wrote? Because she reviled so many people besides Putin, that it's really interesting, why do you think that she died because she annoyed him. For him exactly, she was harmless.

It's not really surprising Russians are backwards, they had no renaissance and were ruled by thr Monguls into the 15th century and also had serfs until the mid 1800s.

Ridiculous and incredibly parochial comment. The Russians given the world significant cultural and scientific achievements. Besides, it's "Mongols."

On topic: Geno is absolutely the Man.
