Ads on jerseys...no no no, that wont raise a whole lot of money...a better idea, let companies buy roster spots on each team! Anyone out there picturing Bill Gates coming across the middle and getting flattened by Brian Marchment? AND ALL IN THE NAME OF CAPITALISM!!! :D

This could get ugly...

I pity the poor guy whose team decides to stick a Viagra or Cialis ad on his jersey. :biglaugh:

Advertisment can sometimes look pretty natural:

The huge wingy thing is advertisement actually, the club emblem is the D on the shoulder.... Oh, and BTW isn't this the first clear visor pic around?

Agreed, that's actually a really nice looking jersey and I would wear that over a lot of tacky NHL jerseys.

Advertising on jerseys can look good, even enhance the outfit, if it's done well. My favorite "sports jersey" is my USPS cycling team kit which is covered in advertising. But everything is well-placed and the colour scheme is nice and so it works.

god i hope this does not happen, time for the conservatives to step up.. now its going too far... damn liberals!!!!!!!

there are already ads on the boards, and logo's/brands on the ice surface (near the read line..)

there are already 3 commercial breaks every period ... ***.

disgusting, if this happens the image of NHL-hockey wont be anything special. the 4 big sports in US/Canada all have this in common, no ads .... and its perfect. How about waiting a year to see how the fans will react to NHL's return? Instead of just being paranoid.

Omfg I really hope scoring goes up otherwise they'll probably increase the nets size too...

I could see this becoming rather “interesting†over time. If sponsors could purchase space on a ‘per game’ basis, can you legally ‘just say no’ to some advertisers and not others? Here are some Nightmare Lists depending on whether your perspective is as a player, a parent, or even the league. Think David Letterman and his countdown. [Disclaimer: the following lists are meant as examples, and do not reflect the views and opinions of anyone here, me included, and Hfboards especially! I hope the mods have a sense of humor today.]

Player Nightmare List:
5. Flea-trol
4. Jock Itch Products
3. Fds Feminine Deodorant Spray
2. K-Y Personal Lubricant
1. EPO or Sudafed

Parents’ List:
5. Budweiser
4. Smirnoff Vodka
3. Joe Camel?
2. Trojan Magnum XL
1. The Morning After Pill

The League’s Nightmare List:
5. National Rifle Association
4. US Military Recruitment Ads
3. Pro-Choice/Right To Life Groups
2. The Democratic Party
1. The Republican Party

While not completely close-minded on this topic, is there a reason to further draw criticism to the sport if they are trying to cultivate a larger US fanbase? The trauma that advertising for the last "Spiderman" movie on the bases of MLB stadiums caused a near lynching of Bud Selig. Unfortunately, this is the path this continent will walk down. First people will be eased into it (ie Rebook, Nike, and Adidas emblems on hockey sweaters, NFL jerseys, and helmets, NBA armbands *hint- we already have this*) and eventually it will be reality. It will be an eternity until someone ponies up the ching to place blatent Euro-hockey-style advertisements on NFL players, they have plenty of revenue comming in, but the NHL will probably be the first "major" NA sport to break the ice, so to speak.

I do cringe when I see shots of the Euro uniforms from the past season. Remember checking out shots of the circus-looking clown suits many Euro teams sported when NHLers showed up last season? The concept has already been born. It is bound to happen, and when it does, I am sure to cringe at the NHL uniforms also.

Edit again:
It would make sense for companies like Ford or Chevy to advertise on Wings sweaters, or Johnson & Johnson to slap a Glade or Windex logo on Preds sweaters, hell even have the Florida Panther crunching a generic version of Viagra insead of a hockey stick. YOu could even justify the Fishsticks reverting back to the Gordon's-looking logo. :yo:

You mock me...

Enjoy your ad ridden world. You deserve it.

Something kinda sad about,
the way that things have come to be.
Desensitized to everything.
What became of subtlety?

Yes, I do mock you.

Gently at first, but with increasing vigour if your comments merit it.

And you have no idea what I deserve or do not deserve.

Some problems with your post:

1. I am not sure what you mean by "Conservatives" and "liberals". If you are speaking in terms of economics, conservatives are MORE in favour of advertising, and indeed any free-market economic activity and against regulation.

2. I hate to break it to you but hockey's image is already nothing special. It has been nothing special for many, many years.

3. I am not sure where you would ever get the idea that hockey is in the same league as baseball/football/basketball. There is a "big three". There has not really been a "big four" for many a year.

4. If ads are in all those spaces you mention and the foundations of hockey have not collapsed, why would ads on shirts make a difference?

5. Revenue maximization is not being paranoid. I expect this has been in the works for a long time.

Hmm...

Wouldn't the NHLPA be against this because this may hurt individual player endorsement deals down the road?

If this is inevitable, I'd be kind of interested to see a NASCAR like endorsement deal for the individual players. Seeing someone like Luongo have gear like a Mark Martin or Dale Earnheart Jr or something with logos all over their jerseys and money for the individual players. Maybe this could help entice players to stay in the NHL with the cap since I'm sure American and Canadian companies will want them to stay here if they sponsor them. It'd also be kind of interesting to see how players rise and fall on sponsor dollars. For instance last year Joe Shmoe the rookie was getting sponsored by Backwaters Cola and no this year since he tore it up he's sponsored by Coke.

I don't know just something to think of.

By the way, I hate NASCAR... I just think the advertising system is interesting.

You've got to be kidding.

North America isn't the center of the universe. Infact, China accounts for 1/6 of the population.

Soccer popularity owns ALL

putting advertising on every square inch is just another way for the NHL to remind us that making money is what's important, not hockey.

On a semi-related note, adblock for mozilla firefox is the greatest little peice of software I have on my computer. I wish there was such a thing for real life.

Wasn't it a great game?

How many ways can the NHL find to drive away its fans? Aparently there's no end...wait til we get a load of the ice capades with a puck that's about to descend on us in a few weeks...sigh...but wasn't it a great game lo those many years ago?
