He has a few moments every game where you can see the skating/hustle/decent skill to project him as a real quality 3rd line defensive forward.

He also tends to have a couple moments every game where he shows the poor puck management or lack of awareness of a young skill player who hasn’t fully made the conversion to a safe, reliable defensive guy yet.

But you can see he’s a guy worth sticking with into next year. Should be a regular on the PK to be gaining experience there.

I am assuming he became a tweener for Boston for just these reasons. Not enough skill to play in the top six. Inconsistent defensively so you can't play him in a checking role. Hard to play those guys when you're trying to win a Cup.

Absolutely.

A guy like Motte had the same issues early in his career until arriving here. Same with Lazar.

It’s a Catch-22 for young defensive forwards - you need to play regularly to develop, but coaches don’t want to suffer through mistakes on develop young checkers when they can just stick some low-event old guy in that spot.
