Getting there! :)

Is it bad that I find it quite amusing that a nearly 50 year old Joe Thornton is still going strong? ;) (Though it looks like he wasn't a regular by the end of the season)

Haha I was shocked every time he kept coming back, but we were able to improve our depth and he finally started to heavily regress.

I'm gonna take a different approach to telling the story of year five as we try to push for the playoffs.

Islanders Announce Upcoming Changes to Front Office Ahead of Season Opener
October 14th 2022

Just hours before the Islanders open their season at home vs Buffalo, General Manager and President of Hockey Operations Lou Lamoreiello sat down with the press to announce changes taking place following the conclusion of this season. The 81 year old Hall of Fame GM will step back, and Long Island native Sparky the Dragon will take over. Lamoriello will remain as the President of Hockey Ops.

Sparky has been with the organization for the past 3 years as an advisor to the GM, being heavily involved in amateur scouting. He is believed to have pushed hard for prospects such as William Dufour, Matthew Maggio, and Isaiah George, all of whom have impressed and are looking like potential steals.

GM Sparky will have his work cut out for him as he inherits an aging team with very little cap flexibility.

The Islanders open the season with the following lineup:

Barzal (88) - Horvat (86) - Holmstrom (78)
Engvall (83) - Nelson (87) - Palmieri (83)
Lee (82) - Pageau (82) - Wahlstrom (78)
Martin (77) - Cizikas (77) - Clutterbuck (76)
Fasching (78)
Gauthier (77)

Pelech (86) - Dobson (85)
Romanov (83) - Pulock (85)
Aho (79) - Mayfield (83)
Bolduc (77)

Sorokin (95)
Varlamov (85)

Islanders Fall Short in Horvat’s Return to Vancouver
November 15th 2023

The Islanders continued their mediocre play to start the season, dropping to 6-7-2 on the year following their 5-2 loss to the Canucks. Noah Dobson continued his hot start, scoring 47 seconds into the game off a feed from Mathew Barzal, as the Islanders led 2-1 heading into the third period. This is the 4th time in 9 losses the team has choked a third period lead, leading to rumors about Coach Lambert’s future in the organization.

In his return to Vancouver, center Bo Horvat recorded a secondary assist and won 19 of 28 (67.8%) of his draws in 20:53 of ice time. The Islanders second line continued their dominant start, and Ilya Sorokin’s early struggles continue, falling to 5-6-2 on the year with a .906 SV% and a 2.98 GAA.

Islanders Defeat Kings 4-1 in Clutterbuck’s 1000th NHL Game
December 9th 2023

Mathew Barzal and Bo Horvat led the way with 3 points apiece in the third period, and Ilya Sorokin made 39 saves as the team continues to battle for a playoff spot. This is the 5th straight victory for the team, now 14–9-3, 3rd in their division.

Barzal (39), Horvat (34), and Palmieri (32) are all above a point per game and Noah Dobson already has 18 points (including 3 GWG). despite a struggling powerplay (16.7%, 19th in the league). Ilya Sorokin is starting to find his game with a .914 SV% on the year, but his veteran backup and countryman Semyon Varlamov has provided excellent support, posting a .920 SV% in 7 appearances.

Holmstrom Leads the Way Over Toronto with 3 Points
February 5th 2024

The young Swede continues to impress on the Islanders top line in a 6-3 victory over the Leafs, scoring the GWG while shorthanded. The Isles PK grows to 87.7%, 1st in the league. Semyon Varlamov made 27 saves in the win, improving the club’s record to 30-17-3, 2nd in the NHL.

Holmstrom and Wahlstrom have been the players vying for the coveted RW1 spot on this team since opening night, but it’s the 22 year old Holmstrom whose fit best on the line. He’s posted 21 points in 42 games, but it’s his defensive abilities that give him the edge over the less versatile Wahlstrom, who ranks 2nd on the team in PPG with 4.

Islanders Firing on all Cylinders vs Rangers in the Stadium Series
February 18th 2024

Ilya Sorokin saved all 29 shots he faced in the 6-0, as fans at MetLife Stadium witnessed the NHL’s best team in action pummel their struggling rivals. All four lines scored for the Islanders. The Islanders 2nd line of Engvall, Nelson, and Palmieri continued their strong season, as each recorded a goal.

The line is all on pace for over 60 points, and with Barzal and Horvat both over a point per game it seems like Lou Lamoriello will look to add the final piece to the top 6 and another solid defenseman in preparation for his last playoff run as GM of the club.

Islanders Add Tarasenko in an Active Trade Deadline
March 9th 2024

Deadline day got off to an early start as the 38-21-3 New York Islanders acquired RW Vladimir Tarasenko from Ottawa for 2 2nd round picks and D prospect Calle Odelius. The veteran goal scorer has scored 19 goals and 47 points this season on the 22-26-13 Senators and will slot in alongside Mat Barzal and Bo Horvat on the Islanders top line.
Lamoriello’s last trade as GM was celebrated by many, but others are critical as it cost the club with the league’s worst ranked prospect pool 2 high picks and one of their best prospects in Odelius. Lou chose not to touch the defense, drawing criticism as the Islanders have a strong top 5 but beyond that lack any organizational depth. The focus on the island turns towards the playoffs as the team ranks first in the Metro.

Season Notes:
  • Mathew Barzal set career highs in goals, assists, and points in his first year at wing. Shifting away from center and playing with the best linemate of his career in Horvat allowed him to flourish, finishing tied for 5th in the league in assists.
  • Tarasenko was amazing on the first line, hitting a PPG over 20 games.
  • The dominant second line of Engvall-Nelson-Palmieri all hit over 60 points.
  • Lee and Pageau played well on the third line, but their cap hits may put them on the trade block under incoming GM Sparky.
  • The longtime 4th line had their best season in years, but their age may soon catch up to them, and Clutterbuck and Martin are pending UFAs.
  • Wahlstrom had his breakout season, playing at a 29 goal and 52 point pace, and finished 3rd on the team in powerplay goals. If Tarasenko doesn’t come back, RW1 is Wally’s spot to lose.
  • Holmstrom struggled after the deadline and will be the odd man out to start the playoffs.
  • Pelech-Dobson were amazing together, Dobber hit a career high in points, and Pelech posted a +53.
  • Sorokin wasn’t a world beater this year, but didn’t need to be. In what is the worst season of his career, he still finished 3rd in wins, 7th in SV%, 5th in GAA, and tied for 5th with 3 shutouts. This man is a freak of nature.

Playoffs Round 1 Preview:
April 20th 2024

The New York Islanders face the 42-32-8 Pittsburgh Penguins in the opening round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. This Pens team isn’t very deep, but their star players, led by Crosby, Malkin, Karlsson, and Letting can go toe to toe with anyone in the league. Tristan Jarry is day-to-day with with a swollen knee, leaving Alex Nedeljkovic to start, who posted a .896 SV% in 23 regular season appearances with the club.

IMG_2765.webp

Islanders Defense Steps up in Game 1 Victory

UBS Arena was as wild as the Old Nassau Coliseum in its heyday, as New York came away with the win in a 4-1 win. The teams entered the third period tied 1-1, but goals from Ryan Pulock and Noah Dobson put the Islanders up before Pierre Engvall scored the empty net dagger.

Pulock recorded 3 points and was a +3 in 18:47 of ice time, and Ilya Sorokin was sensational, posting a .970 SV% in game 1. The Islanders lead the series 1-0.

IMG_2766.jpeg

New York’s Second Line Stays Hot, Scoring 2 Goals in the 3-1 Win

Pierre Engvall, Brock Nelson, and Kyle Palmieri continued to click, as the trio scored the opening goal and the eventual game winner. Erik Karlsson scored on the powerplay for the Pens, who only have one 5 on 5 goal through 2 games as the series heads back to PPG Paints Arena.

Sorokin continues to be the backbone of this team, saving 30 of 31, out dueling Alex Nedeljkovic and helping his team jump out to a 2-0 series lead. Vladimir Tarasenko left in the third period due to an injury and later was ruled out for the series with back spasms, and Simon Holmstrom will draw into the lineup on the 3rd line in Vlad’s absence while Wahlstrom will play on the top line.

Crosby, Pens Outlast the Islanders In a Back and Fourth Game 3 Victory.

The Penguins jumped out to a 1-0 lead 49 seconds in off a snipe from Sidney Crosby. The Islanders evened the game off a tap in goal from Pierre Engvall 35 seconds later. That was the theme of this game, as 5 times the Islanders evened the game before Erik Karlsson scored his 3rd goal in 3 games with 4 minutes left to play.

Jarry made his return to the net, but was left with injury midway through the game after allowing 5 goals on 20 shots. Nedeljkovic didn’t allow a goal in relief and will get the game 4 start. Ilya Sorokin was pulled less than 4 minutes in, allowing 3 goals on 4 shots, and Varlamov made 27 saves on 30 shots in relief. The Islanders 2nd line scored 2 goals, but were on the ice for 5 against as the series now stands Islanders 2, Penguins 1.

IMG_2768.webp

Islanders Take a 3-1 Lead Over Pittsburgh

Ilya Sorokin returned to playoff form after an abysmal game 3, posting a .926 SV% in the 3-2 win. Oliver Wahlstrom scored the biggest goal of his career, sniping the game winning goal with 1:44 left in regulation off the feed from Mathew Barzal, who is still looking for his first goal of the series.

More bad injury news for New York as Noah Dobson left the game in the first period. He’s ruled out for game 5 with a suspected concussion, and it’s unknown how much time he’ll miss. Sam Bolduc will draw into the lineup as the Islanders attempt to close out the Penguins in 5.

Red-Wings-Penguins-Hockey-7-1641232797.jpeg

Penguins Dominate Islanders, Win 6-1 in Jarry’s Return

Jarry appears to have put his injury struggles behind him, saving 26 of 27 in the blowout win. Ilya Sorokin found himself pulled after allowing 5 goals in the first period. Drew O’Connor scored 2 for the Penguins.

The Islanders missed the presence of Noah Dobson, as the new top pair of Adam Pelech and Ryan Pulock were a -4 in the game. The Penguins look to keep the momentum going after the win, as they trail 3-2 heading back to Pittsburgh. The Islanders have to wonder which Sorokin they’ll get, the one who allowed 4 goals in 3 games, or the one who allowed 8 goals in less than 24 minutes of ice time in games 3 and 5.

Crosby Scores in Double Overtime Thriller, Penguins Force Game 7 Back on the Island

More disappointment for the Islanders, as they rallied from down 4-1 to force the game to overtime. They dominated play through 2 OT sessions, but it was Sidney Crosby who undressed rookie defenseman Sam Bolduc before ripping a backhand past Sorokin.

Ilya Sorokin allowed 5 goals on 37 shots, but cannot be blamed for the loss as he did everything he could, stopping 14 of 15 in overtime. The Islanders are playing shorthanded, as the absences of Noah Dobson and Vladimir Tarasenko are great. Game 7 on the Island, and Coach Lane Lambert said to expect lineup changes following the 5-4 OT Loss.

Penguins, Rust, Knock Out the Islanders in 7 in a Close 4-3 Game

Islanders fans booed their team off the ice following their round 1 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins after securing a 3-1 lead early in the series. New York entered the third period down 4-3 after controlling play, but under Coach Lambert the team fell flat on their faces, with the puck winding up on net only 4 times in the 3rd. Ilya Sorokin made multiple highlight reel saves to keep his team in the game, but it wasn’t enough.

Lambert’s coaching changes proved to be futile. He shifted Barzal to the right wing, his weaker side, in order to try and get struggling captain Anders Lee going, who had one assist in the 7 game series. JG Pageau was left to babysit the kids in Oliver Wahlstrom and Simon Holmstrom, but the line changes didn’t work out.

League Notes:

  • Connor Bedard scored 52 goals and 104 points, running away with the Calder.
  • Connor McDavid hit 62 goals and 124 points, winning the Art Ross, Hart, Ted Lindsay, and Rocket Richard
  • Adam Fox led defensemen with 92 points but finished 2nd in Norris voting to Evan Bouchard.
  • Juuse Saros had a record of 34-24-10, with a .922 SV% and a 2.52 GAA, winning the Vezina.

Work to Do
June 7th 2024

Tough times lie ahead for the New York Islanders Organization as new General Manager Sparky the Dragon officially takes over following the club’s embarrassing first round choke job to the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Pens went on to win the Stanley Cup, taking down Vegas in 5 games. The mood was unpleasant to say the least at the Islanders locker room cleanup day. Reporters didn’t hold back, asking tough questions to the players:

Q: “Ilya, at times you were fantastic, stealing games and helping your team jump out early in the series. But you couldn’t put together a solid 60 minutes in the last three games of the series. What went wrong?”
A: “I didn’t stop puck. I need to stop puck.”

Q: “Adam, you posted the best regular season of your career, and were a league best +53. However in the playoffs, your play fell off a cliff. You didn’t record a point and were a playoffs worst -7. What do you have to say to your disappointed teammates?”
A: “Nothing. We all played like shit at times, and this loss is on all of us. Injuries hit us hard”.

Q: “Anders, you’re the captain of this hockey team. You’re supposed to be a leader. What type of example are you setting by recording one assist and no goals over 7 games?”
A: “I had a rough series. I’ve just gotta get back to basics, y’know? *Sniffs* Get pucks deep, *scratches chin*, get on the forecheck, *sniffs again* and work hard.

Q: Mat, you had a strong series, but that didn’t transfer to the score sheet. You posted 4 points in 7 games, and were outscored by each member of the 4th line. How are you going to be better?”
A: There’s no excuses. Yeah we were injured, yeah we faced a tough goalie, yeah we got unlucky but at the end of the day we choked. We blew a 3-0 series lead. We have to sit down and reflect on how move past this. We’re not taking this loss with a smile. We know what we did wrong and I guarantee we’re gonna be a better team because of this.”

Q: “Bo, you came to New York to win. Since you’ve arrived the Islanders have lost in the first round 2 times in 2 years. Losing is a pattern for you wherever you go, is it even possible to break that pattern at this point?”
A: “Yes. The Stanley Cup is coming back to Long Island very very soon, I’ll tell you that for free.”

I hope kinger doesn’t mind I’ve pretty much copied his format, but hey, it works amazingly. Every year I read his Rangers write-ups and find myself hating the Rags a little less with every post of his.

Islanders Trade Captain Anders Lee in Rookie GM’s First Move
June 23rd 2024

GM Sparky has ushered in the next era of Islanders hockey. Anders Lee, the captain of the club for the past 6 years has been traded to Arizona in a draft day trade.

The trade is as follows: The New York Islanders Send LW Anders Lee (84) to the Arizona Coyotes along with pick number 25 in exchange for pick number 36.

Lee scored 17 goals last season, his lowest in a full season since 2015-16. That, combined with a lone assist in the playoffs, spelled the end of his Islanders tenure, scoring 464 goals across 760 games.

Coming off the books is Lee’s $7 million cap hit, freeing up some much needed cap flexibility for GM Sparky the Dragon. Sparky had this to say: “I want to thank Anders for his time here, and all that he has accomplished as one of the greatest captains in team history. His tenure here will be remembered in all its glory, but it was time for the team to take a different direction. I wish Anders the best of luck in Arizona, where he can continue being a leader on an up and coming team and continue his pursuit for a Stanley Cup”.

Islanders 2024 Draft Recap:
  • Round 2 Pick 36: C/LW SNP Tij Iginla (69 Low Elite)
  • Round 3 Pick 82: C PWF Lasse Lumme (69 Med Top 9)
  • Round 5 Pick 153: RW SNP Magnus Vikingstad (50 Low Top 6)

October 13th 2024

UBS Arena gave thunderous applause as the opening night lineup was announced prior to puck drop against the Avs, as it concluded with none other than star player and fan favorite, Mathew Barzal, was announced as the 16th captain in franchise history. Brock Nelson and Bo Horvat will wear the 2 “A”s this season.

In a close 2-2 game Barzal picked off a pass in the d-zone and skated the puck down the ice, scoring the winner with 1:03 left to play. Ilya Sorokin made 29 saves in the victory.

Islanders Fall 3-1 in Rematch Against Pens
November 26th 2024

New York continues their rocky start to the young season falling to 8-12 on the year. The Islanders continue to miss the presence of Noah Dobson, who has missed the past 5 games with an upper body injury.

Bo Horvat scored the only goal for the Islanders while Ilya Sorokin made 36 saves in the loss.

William Dufour Impresses in 3-2 Shootout Loss to Rangers
December 9th 2024

The Islanders struggles continued as the young rookie made his season debut on the top line, recording the secondary assist on Noah Dobson’ game tying goal.

Dufour has been on fire in Bridgeport, and got the first call up as Tarasenko (12P in 26G, -3), Wahlstrom (10 in 26, -5) and Holmstrom (6 in 26, +0) have all struggled to find chemistry with Barzy and Bo. The star duo, along with the 2nd line, have struggled to carry the load as the depth scoring has been nonexistent to start the year for the 11-14-1 Islanders. Fans have been calling for Lambert’s firing.

Tarasenko, Cizikas The First to Fall as GM Sparky Begins His Midseason Retool
January 24th 2025

The Islanders sit 6th in the Metropolitan Division and have made their first move of the disappointing season. Vladimir Tarasenko and Casey Cizikas have struggled hard this year, and have been shipped off to Seattle. Brian Dumoulin (80) and 2 2nd round picks are the return.

Cizikas has 2 years after this remaining on his deal, and is a -16 in 37 games. Tarasenko has suffered from a poor shooting percentage, shooting 8.2% and is only on pace for 16 goals. Dumoulin gives the club extra insurance on the backend, as Sam Bolduc has struggled as the 7th D, with a single assist and a -7 through 17 games.

Kyle MacLean gets the call up and is expected to split 4C duties with Pierre-Edouard Bellemare.

The Current Lineup is as follows:

Holmstrom (79) - Horvat (87) - Wahlstrom (83)
Engvall (83) - Nelson (87) - Palmieri (84)

Islanders, Stars Swap Forwards as Both Teams Look for a Shakeup
February 20th 2025

New York trades Oliver Wahlstrom (83), JG Pageau (84), Sam Bolduc (79), and SEA’s 2025 2nd Pick to the Dallas Stars in exchange for Jamie Benn (83) Mavrik Bourque (79) and a top 10 protected 1st Round Pick in 2026.

Oliver Wahlstrom was another victim of a poor shooting percentage, and had 8 goals and 28 points in 56 games. A change in scenery now sees him playing alongside Robertson and Hintz in a more offensive system. Pageau has had a strong season, with 33 points in 56 games as the 3C. Moving on from $8M off the books for next year opens up possibilities for GM Sparky to spend big in free agency. Sam Bolduc never found his footing on the Island, and now the 24 year old gets a chance to play regular minutes.

Jamie Benn is on an expiring $9.5M contract and his defensive play has been abysmal. Dallas creates cap space to add at the deadline and the Islanders get a veteran player capable of bringing offense with Barzal still out. Mavrik Bourque has 25 points in 56 games on Dallas’ 4th line.

At the time of the trade, the Islanders are 24-28-4, 7th in the Metro, but only 5 points back of the 2nd Wildcard Spot currently held by the Washington Capitals. Dallas is 6th in the Central at 26-21-9, 1 point out of the 2nd Wildcard, and only 3 points out of 2nd in their division.

Barzal Scores 2 in Return Against Oilers
February 28th 2025

The Captain made his mark in his return to the lineup, finishing off a 4 point night with the OT winner. The Barzal-Horvat-Dufour line scored 3 goals in the comeback victory.

Barzal couldn’t have returned at a better time as the Islanders have now won five straight games. 3 points out of the 2nd Wildcard Spot in the East, the playoffs may be a possibility despite a horrendous start that saw GM Sparky trade away 4 forwards from the opening night lineup.

Islanders Sign Star UFA in Buchnevich
July 1st 2025

GM Sparky has done what Lou Lamoriello could not: signed a star winger to play with Mathew Barzal. The club announced that Pavel Buchnevich has agreed to terms on a 5 year, $50M dollar contract. Buchnevich is coming off the 25 goal, 73 point season with the struggling St. Louis Blues. The 30 year old Russian has returned back to the state of New York after being traded from the Rangers in 2021. Buchnevich is expected to replace Andrew Mangiapane on the top line, who signed with the Chicago Blackhawks in free agency.

New York also brought in defenders Johnathan Kovacevic (1 year, $925k) and Yegor Zamula (2 years, $975k) to fight for the 6th and 7th D spots, replacing Oliver Ekman-Larsson.

The club now has just over $6M in cap space to sign RFA’s Alexander Romanov, Mavrik Bourque, and William Dufour.

GM Sparky Announces Head Coach Lane Lambert Has Been Relieved of His Duties
May 23rd 2026

The young General Manager sat down with media one week following the team’s collapse in the 2nd round after leading the series 3-0.

Sparky the Dragon had this to say: “I want to thank Lane for taking this team to the Stanley Cup Finals last year for the first time since 1984. However, it’s become clear that this team needs a new voice. Lane’s lack of adjustments in this series sank the team, and the players weren’t able to come together to close out the series. The search for the teams next head coach is already underway”.

League Notes:
  • Mitch Marner led the NHL with 120 points, winning the Art Ross and Lady Byng.
  • Auston Matthews scored 61 goals to win his 3rd career Richard Trophy.
  • Quinn Hughes and Cale Makar each scored 92 points and finished 1-2 in Norris voting.
  • Filip Gustavsson went 40-15-8 with 5 SOs, a .916 SV% and a 2.64 GAA, winning both the Vezina and the Jennings.
  • Cutter Gauthier scored 66 points and won the Calder in a landslide. 2025 1st OA pick Michael Misa (SJS) scored a disappointing 28 points.
  • Columbus took the momentum from their 3-0 series comeback all the way to the club’s first Stanley Cup Championship.

Islanders Annouce Dean Evason as the Team’s New Head Coach
July 1st 2026

Dean Evason has signed a 5 year contract as Head Coach, Islanders GM Sparky announced to the press: “It was a very big priority to bring in an experienced head coach that can allow our best players to play at their best”.

Evasion’s time with the Minnesota Wild included Kirill Kaprizov setting a career high in goals and points (56 and 117), a Selke runner up in Eriksson Ek, a career high in points for Faber (42), and the best goaltender in the league in Gustavsson. If Evason can get similar results for players like Barzal, Horvat, Dobson, and Sorokin, the sky is the limit for this New York Islanders club.

Evason led the Wild to a 49-23-10 record last season, allowing the least goals against per game in the league. The club lost in 7 games to the Dallas Stars in the Western Conference Finals.

The Islanders Make Big Shakeup At Trade Deadline, Trade Away Pelech and Mayfield
March 7th 2027

GM Sparky has begun his retool on the fly as the club sits 30-26-4, 8 points back of the 2nd wildcard. Longtime defenders Adam Pelech and Scott Mayfield, along with a 2027 5th round pick, have been shipped off to the Detroit Red Wings. In return, the Islanders acquire expiring players Andrew Copp, Dmitri Kulikov, and a 3rd in 2028.

Adam Pelech (739 GP) and Scott Mayfield (718 GP) were lifelong Islanders, but each had term left on their expensive contracts, and with their declining play, it was a savvy move for GM Sparky to dump them while they still had any positive value.

The team looks to finish out the season with the following lineup:
Barzal (88) - Horvat (87) - Buchnevich (90)
Engvall (85) - Nelson (84) - Maggio (83)
Copp (84) - Bourque (84) - Palmieri (84)
