Leafs Make Their Last Move; Send Gunnarsson to Edmonton

The Toronto Maple Leafs concluded their off-season today, sending defenceman Carl Gunnarsson to the Edmonton Oilers in the final move before the upcoming year.

"While we love Carl Gunnarsson we managed to bring Dan Girardi on board who we feel is an upgrade, and another right handed shot. As a result, we had to move Carl and Edmonton was very interested."

In exchange for Gunnarsson, the Leafs acquired their own 1st round selection in the 2015 Entry Draft that was sent in the James Reimer trade, as well as defensive prospect David Musil.

"Edmonton will be a better team with Carl, and we were able to secure a 3rd 1st round selection next year while also adding David Musil who will go straight to the Marlies. We feel this deal works very well for both sides."

:edmonton
confirmed, and we also acquired Ryan Rupert in this deal.

Pretty happy with how things went. Addressed need for top six forwards (Cammalleri and Stafford), and a top four defenseman (MacDonald). Added veteran depth (Jagr and Bergenheim) for cheap as well. Feel like there's three capable scoring lines and a high energy pest line. The defense has a well balance of puck movers and stay-at-home guys, and the goaltending tandem is solid.

With a great performance in the playoff, we felt comfortable with our team and didn't make major changes during the offseason. Youngsters Reilly Smith and Ryan Spooner will be given more opportunities to have an impact, while the addition of David Moss (UFA) and Dennis Seidenberg (returning from injury) should solidify our core. We're looking forward to another great season next year.

Changes:

Out: Brad Boyes (rental), Frazer McLaren, Nikolai Kulemin, Mason Raymond, James Reimer, Carl Gunnarsson, Paul Ranger, Colton Orr, Troy Bodie, Peter Holland, Stuart Percy, Carter Ashton, Ryan Rupert

In: Dustin Brown, Dan Girardi, Brian Boyle, Leo Komarov, Peter Regin, Teemu Hartikainen, Shawn Thornton, Ray Emery, David Musil, Tristan Jarry, EDM 1st 2015, PIT 1st 2015

Summary:

Forwards: We augmented our leadership and physical play by adding Dustin Brown - he hadn't had the greatest season in LA, but we're hoping that playing alongside his countrymen in JVR, Kessel, and Gleason, he will find his new stride. We paid a heavy price to get him and lost some depth in Holland, Ashton, and Percy, but this was a great add for us as a 2nd/3rd line winger. We also adopted a different approach for our 3rd and 4th lines - while they're less offensive, they're crasher and bangers with great defensive prowess by replacing guys like Mason Raymond, Troy Bodie, and Colton Orr with Leo Komarov, Shawn Thornton, and Brian Boyle. Peter Regin has been brought in to add a little bit of offensive flair in our bottom six.

Defence: We were committed to one thing - we needed another right handed shot, and one who could grow with the team and could log big minutes. Dan Girardi was the solution to our issue, so we knew we had to pursue him hard. In grabbing him, and spending more than we had planned, we had to trade Carl Gunnarsson. While he's a very good defenceman we feel Girardi is a better long term fit, and Gunnarsson's problematic hip made him we could look at moving. The return was good though, as we got our 1st back from the Reimer deal and added David Musil. As a 7th guy, we are going to give TJ Brennan a shot - he's earned it.

Goaltending: We knew we had to deal Reimer. If he's a clear cut #1 he can flourish, and he wasn't getting that chance with Bernier. Edmonton will give him that chance, and we're happy with the return we got for him. To back up Bernier, we've brought in Ray Emery as a backup who can pick up the load should Bernier suffer an injury. We also feel we've added a great goalie in the system in the form of Tristan Jarry.

Future: We've added a fantastic prospect in Brendan Perlini at the draft, and also added prospects in David Musil and Tristan Jarry. Most importantly, we have added 2 more 1st round picks next season, including one which could potentially be a lottery pick, in a draft that's considered deeper in terms of overall talent. We're feeling very good where we are. We have lost Peter Holland, which hurt but we needed to give up quality, as well as Stuart Percy which we felt we could do with our defensive depth in our prospects. Carter Ashton was also moved out, but he may rediscover his game in LA.

Overall, we feel great about the upcoming season and think we are constructed to do some damage in the playoffs.

Pretty happy with what I was able to accomplish. Added a stud defense prospect in Ristolainen to be mentored on the job with Giordano. Drafted a great center (or LW if we choose to play him with Monahan) prospect in Bennett as well as his Frontenac teammates. Added incredible depth to the RW and RD cupboard in what was very bare bones. Put a fixture in net with Khubodin that I feel can grow with the team and take over as a starting goaltender in the league. Signed Heatley and Phillips to one year contracts and will try to pump and dump them up to the deadline and collect more assets. Expect the next couple years to be leans ones, but we went in with the mindset that we wanted to add a McDavid or Eichel in the 2015 Draft.

Pretty happy with the team. Added quite a bit of scoring depth in Vanek and Koivu which coupled with another year of experience for Granlund, El Nino, Coyle and Zucker could make us one of the best offensive teams in the league. We were also able to retain Miller which I felt was important, with Harding and Backstrom each having respective health problems and Kuemper not ready to be a go to guy. Would have liked to have added another defenseman, however we didn't get a response on a player prior to the deadline and we are comfortable with our top four carrying most of the load.

Cheers! We agree there were better goalies out there, but we had a very small window in our budget. We thought about maybe giving Drew MacIntyre the backup job after being steller for the Marlies, but then thought about if Bernier went down long term... weren't going to put the keys to the house in the hands of a guy with barely any NHL experience.

Emery is still young, though a bit injury prone - we're hoping a small work load will help that. We explored trade options too, but the price tags weren't where we needed them to be.

Palyers who'll likely compete for a spot in training camp and top call-up option: Top pick Forward: Leon Draisaitl (may keep him for 9 games), Drew Shore, Brett Gallant, Kris Newbury, Jon Matsumoto, Stefan Matteau, Quinton Howden, Vince Trocheck. Defenseman:Colby Robak, Brandon Burlon, Alex Petrovic.

We believe we'll compete for a playoff sport with our young roster. Our forward are really big, physical and a solid group defensively. Same with our defenseman, we have size and steady two-way defenseman. We have two solid goaltenders well. We'll have a big, physical, hard working team that play throughout the system very well. We'll be tough to play against, and we'll win games like that. We trust all our lines/pairings and everybody will play in their role. Lot of skills as well with all these great young talent players.

I imagine with TDD 10 days away, this was likely our last game of the season till we enter FA games sometime around the playoffs?

I'm hopeful we can string together another game, using the real TDD as our own.

May be doable if we can get everyone on board quickly, meaning we start by Saturday.
