What about Orlov?

Who knows... It depends on what the Russian coaching staff believes, if they believe Dale Hunters side of why not to put Orlov in, then not a chance in hell. He got scratched the entire playoffs for one turn over in the last game of the season.

If they can, they're definitly going to call Ovechkin.

They don't seem to like semin as much though....

They don't like him as much, but they still like him- from one of their recent interviews. They'll still invite him if they can.

Ovechkin - Malkin - Perezhogin
Kuznetsov- Datsyuk - Semin
Zherdev - Tereschenko - Shirokov
Kokarev - Svitov - Kulemin

Popov and Ketov are out. I hate to take out Popov because he was been good with Malkin, but I think Ovechkin has to play in that position.

Defense remains the weak link. Why don't they not invite Orlov?

there is no more place for orlov. for example bilyaletdinov did not pick Max Chudinov, a young and very skills d-man, so i think orlov was never on his list.

ps: Ovechkin & Syomin will join the team on wednesday

Unfortunate that they are not going to try Orlov. A lot of coaches prefer more experienced players though. If they're going to mix up the lines, I'd really like to see Kulemin with Malkin ... they've done well together before. And of course the purely selfish hope that Shero will see how well they play together and acquire him from Toronto :)

I would have replaced Tereschenko with Burmistrov. I think 27 is by far the weakest centerman in this team.

He is a faceoff specialist and a great 2 way player. Most people don't understand his game, but Bill has him there for a very very good reason. If you watch him, he can destroy attacks and cover for Defenseman. He's not going to do a lot offensively, but that's not why he's there.

Ketov, Kokarev play importnat Balance roles. So substituning them for Ovi and Syomin will not make much sense strategically.

Shirokov and Zherdev on the other hand, have similar roles and have been OK at doing them, but not Great. Ovi and Syomin can logically take over their roles.

It's a very tough call though, because the team they have now is good. I'm not convinced that these guys can just walk in and be better.

Malkin is on fire, there is no reason to break his line just because the names are coming. Let alone Ovechkin didn't do much at WC past couple of years.

this

there are a lot of reasons why O&S might fail. Different ice, acclimatization, team chemistry, tired after PO, unfamiliar with Bill's tactics...

I think it is a Pejorative Slured idea to bring players that late in the tournament.
agree. i would think they are dead tired now and ovechkin has always been atrocious in the national team. i dont see any reason why this time he will be different.

I wouldn't say atrocious, but not as good as he could be. He still scored goals and assisted in the past, just not to his full capacity. Not to mention the Olympic Go ahead goal in 2006 against Canadians.

Ovechkin should be put with Datsyuk, Malkin's line has been killing it while Datsyuk's line has been silent so it can't hurt to put Ovechkin with him.
