The Leafs want youth.
Of course they want to move their older guys .
But nobody's buying obviously.

If the TDL passes, and they are all here ... then we missed an opportunity

he's a good dman, we should extend him the first chance we get if it's at a reasonable price.

Gardiner will have 10 more putrid games and everyone will be calling for his head.

And then, he will magically morph into an elite defensemen who transitions like a beast.

Rinse and repeat. Story of Gardiner's career. He is probably the most inconsistent defensemen in the league, a living embodiment of Jekyll and Hyde.

Don't have the depth like some teams in the league who can lose a top 4 defenseman and not miss a beat. We would need to get someone like Muzzin to make moving Gardiner a possibility.

nope. we would have a massive hole on the backend.
What massve hole would that be?

Jake is known for his offence, Borgman who is arguably more consistent defensivly has 2 less points in 2 less games with much less ice time.

You got Nylander and Matthews as the only true core pieces, the rest are currenty complimentary type players.

The only thing to be said about Gardiner, the media need to stop saying he can still improve. Gards isn't a kid, he's in his prime, he is what he is, accept it or don't, but it isn't going to change much. Personally, warts and all, I'd keep him but.....

Rielly _____
Borgman Zaitsev
Dermott Liljegren
Hainsey Carrick

Leafs could have a solid d-core next year if Gardiner is traded for a similar RD who is bigger but maybe a little less skilled.

When Jake gets hot he can separate himself from Borgman in an instant.

Gardiner
-At times fails the eye test
-At time astounds the eye test
-His underlying number are nothing less than insanely positive

Zaitsev
-At times fails the test
-At times is invisible which is that a 'good defenseman' does according to eye tester's folklore
-His underlying numbers are exceptionally bad

Leafs Nation conclusion from these facts... Trade Gardiner, Zaitsev is solid

I'll also add that Rielly looks like a 1D this season with Hainsey because he's not being weighed down by the anchor that it Zaitsev, Zaitsev is destroying Jake this season those which is no small feat given Jake has improved the numbers of pretty much everyone he's ever been paired with.

Can we put on our critical thinking hats Leaf Nation? Or may we reasonably point out our actual weak points because if we don't smarten up, the league will catch on and we'll have a billion how to dump Zaitsev trade proposals.

At the same time, he's very consistent in those periods. He very rarely mixes great with awful from game to game.

Wait to see how Dermott looks next year. If he's solid and Gardiner won't go cap friendly deal we should trade him by next year's deadline.
If Dermott is not ready we should see what magic ufa we sign in the off season.

Big picture thinking, you need someone way better in Gardiner's role to eat up all those minutes, bring stability and still bring the offensive game. Realistically, that piece isn't going to magically show up, so without an adequate replacement and upgrade, you don't just blow it up.

That said though, Gardiner has low lows and high highs, so at his worst he looks worse than your average struggling defenseman but on the whole he's still a good player.

We need Gardiner and we need him to play better. However if we needed to use him to acquire a defenseman upgrade (like a Trouba) , he would be included in the deal. Right now that deal is a pipe dream so we just need Gardiner to be better.

A better Gardiner is always a good thing. I was talking about what could happen in the last year of his deal.

Get rid of him. So sick and tired of his play.

Can't pass. Can't receive. Can't handle. Can't keep the puck in the zone during PPs.

Enough. I'm more than happy to see him go. Trade him for anyone I don't care. Just go away.

The Leafs are not making a trade. Gardiner is a very affordable Dman and we have no oen better.
