I'm wondering if some small part of the reason Pesce is getting so much opportunity on the PP is to give him a chance to up his value before his next contract. The Borg has stated they'd like him to retire a Cane and the story is that early on in his career with the Canes Pesce was disgruntled with his usage. We all know how much offense can up the $ value of contracts for defensemen, so it wouldn't surprise me if that was a focus for Pesce. If the Canes switch him out now they can at least say "hey, we gave you the chance".

Half right. In the last 3 games (all losses) KK has 0 points. In the 6 games before that (all wins) he had 6 points. Forget Svech, Aho, Necas, and the goaltenders; clearly, as KK goes so go the Canes. That's just math!

If we cornered Rod and forced a full explanation, I expect it would be along the lines that we want a shooting threat toward the center of the net from that left point position. That draws the PK’s high forward toward the middle, which leaves a bunch of space for a left handed forward to create a shooting threat on the right side of the ice, and as the puck rotates lower that forward can slip in quietly as the uncovered shooter.

If you watch the PPG Pacioretty scored in this game, that is exactly what happened. CBJ swarmed all over Burns and Aho on the left side of the ice, so Pacioretty had plenty of space to sneak in an open one-timer. Three quick passes and it’s a slam dunk goal.

And every team in the league knows this.

Especially when it comes to goaltending. Who could forget their oft-lauded goaltenders? Andrew Raycroft, Justin Pogge, Garrett Sparks, Jack Campbell, all future HoFers according to Toronto fans at certain points in their career.

I miss when they used to give stupid nicknames to their goalies. Who could forget Jonas “The Monster” Gustavsson or Jussi “The Rhyno” Rynnas.

This was in 2018-19, when his spot as Slavin's partner was assigned to Hamilton , Faulk and de Haan were the 2nd pairing and Pesce played the 1st half of the season on the 3rd pair.

It was also when the Canes were trying to swing Pesce for a holdout Nylander, and the "Pesce is disgruntled with ice time" rumor came in the week before the deadline for Nylander to sign a deal or sit out the season...so putting 2 and 2 together and that was the excuse they would have used had they pulled off Pesce for Nylander.

Though soon after RBA swapped Pesce and Hamilton, so it may well have been true.

Give credit where credit is due - notable Toronto Maple Leafs 1st round goalie Tuukka Rask is one of the best of his era.

Of course. Teams scout each others' power plays and know what to expect. Skill and execution are the key factors to success, not surpise.

Ovechkin has scored eleventy bajillion identical PP goals from the same spot, and not a single one of them has surprised the defense. He scores because he's just better than the D and goalie. We don't have that guy in our lineup, it's the "oomph per 60" issue that's not going to change without anything short of a miracle in our favor. What we can do is try and find guys like Pacioretty and Burns who at least create a credible threat when they have the puck. This is why it's so important to get guys like Pesce and Stastny off those PP units, in favor of guys who can actually score.
