My boy Hanzal is having a monster year so far.
I think part of the genius was sending the players down on a couple of levels. It called out the vets (kids were doing fine) and it brought experience (never hurts). And yes my knee jerk reaction was not positive regarding sending players down, until I heard Tippetts reasoning.
Line shuffling? That's just gonna happen. How 'bout Ribs with Korps & Moss!
Started with:
Boedker - Vermette - Doan
Ribeiro - Hanzal - Vrbata
Korpikoski - Chipchura - Moss
Klinkhammer - Kennedy - Biz
Then when it became clear Klinkhammer is an offensive juggernaut:
Klinkhammer - Vermette - Doan
Boedker - Hanzal - Vrbata
Korpikoski - Ribeiro - Moss
Biz - Chipchura - Kennedy
Kennedy got less than 5 min. and Biz didn't crack 4.
OEL had 10 minutes on special teams alone.
Hanzal played 21 min. including defending the 5 on 3 and got a penalty hat trick for his trouble. Cue signing a right-handed penalty kill specialist center to lighten his load.
I thought Korpikoski and Moss looked great yesterday, with both Chip and Ribeiro.
^ good call on the Halpern signing tux. I've come around. It makes sense.
I just love watching Klink play. I think he can turn in to a special player. He is always at top speed, good on the boards and not afraid of going to the net and loves to throw his body.
I think Stone's shot is a huge asset, but he really needs to work on his puck control if he's going to be on the point on the powerplay. I didn't see the Canes game, but during the Flyers game, he bobbled passes at least a couple times and lost the zone. One of them turned into an Adam Hall breakaway, which led to a penalty shot. Maybe it's just nerves, but he's a liability back there until he gets it under control.
I've been a huge fan of Klinkhammer though. I wonder if his deficiencies will be exposed with more minutes, but so far, he's looked like a mini Doan out there.
If I remember correctly it was a pretty terrible pass that led to the Hall breakaway. It's something we need to work on. The short passes on the power play should be tape to tape every time. There really is no excuse for passes to guys' skates when there is no pressure.
