Ansar Khan: Helene St. James: Red Wings continue playoff push vs. Kings, who might be without Dustin Brown following head shot

DETROIT – The desperate Detroit Red Wings continue their playoff push Wednesday at Joe Louis Arena against the defending Stanley Cup champion Los Angeles Kings (NBC Sports Network exclusive), who might be without their captain.

Dustin Brown faces a possible suspension by the NHL after delivering an elbow to the head of Minnesota's Jason Pominville Tuesday during the second period of the Wild's 2-1 win.

A wobbly Pominville left the game and did not return. Brown was not penalized.

Whether or not they face Brown, the Red Wings will continue to face pressure to win.

Detroit received some help from San Jose on Tuesday, when the Sharks defeated Dallas 3-2. The Red Wings, in ninth place in the Western Conference with 50 points, remain two points ahead of the Stars.

If Detroit gains three points in its next two games (Nashville visits JLA on Thursday), Dallas would be eliminated from playoff contention even before hosting the Red Wings Saturday in the season finale.

The Columbus Blue Jackets, with 51 points, are clinging to the eighth and final playoff spot. They have two games remaining, Thursday at Dallas and Saturday at home vs. Nashville.

If Dallas beats Columbus in regulation and Detroit gains three points in its next two games, the Red Wings will clinch a playoff spot.

“It feels like it’s the playoffs right now,'' Red Wings defenseman Jonathan Ericsson said. “That’s the type of urgency it feels like. You have to win every game to stay in. That’s how it is for us right now. If we don’t win, we’re not going to be in. Essentially, it’s all up to us.''

Red Wings coach Mike Babcock said pressure is good because it means they have a chance.

“They're big boys, they understand what's going on more than anybody,'' Babcock said.

LGRW!!

A win tonight would be huge, need at least a point though. Hopefully Jimmy plays out of his mind like the last time the Kings were at the Joe.

Also it looked like Bert was in tonight but he's still out, from Khan

Babcock said Bertuzzi is not playing tonight.

However, (From St. James)

Todd Bertuzzi says he will play Thursday.

L.A. had to battle hard yesterday vs. minny. they pushed the kings to the edge. so i assume the kings will be easy prey today when the wings decide to show up. wings win with 3 goals difference if they are not playing their poo poo hockey.

Pretty good chance Brown gets suspended for a game or two for that elbow...too bad about Bert but don't play him if he isn't ready.

With Dallas losing last night, now is the time to strike and put the back on heat on the Jackets.

Gotta win here. A loss would pretty much mean we'd have to run the table with Dallas beating CBJ. If we win we still control our own fate.

I think we're gonna see another huge game from Jimmy, he's going to have 40+ saves for us tonight. Datsyuk gets 2, Nyquist gets 1 & Franzen gets 1 for us, Kopitar & Carter answer for the Kings but we win 4-2.

Just win baby.

Heck, if we run the table and get a little help, we could still get 7th.

And the Wings are the best option?

3 losses went to OT/SO. outplayed them in regulation in those 3 games. wouldn't exactly say i'm optimistic in a 7 game series vs CHI, but I'm sure the Wings are more than comfortable playing them. Actually probably prefer it cause of the travel too.

Detroit Red Wings are 4-8 in OT/SO. That's 8 points lost right there. On top of that, a DeKeyser-less Red Wings Defense from Feb. 13 to Feb 21 had 4 games where they were tasked with holding onto a multi-goal lead and couldn't do it. Of course, our D is much better now than then. This team could very well easily have been the 4th seed with a little luck, actual defense at important moments of the game.

This needs to happen, a matchup with Anaheim is a best case senario. But then again, we'll probably have to play Chicago at some point, so it doesn't really matter I suppose.

I'm getting ahead of myself, I just hope they make the post-season.

i think ,this game vs LA they should play defense first and have Pavel play more offence than defense

There are too many veterans on the Red Wings to be scared of any team. For both good and bad.

LA didn't show up til lthe third so they should be well rested.

Go Wings Go!

Push for 7th! 8th won't be too bad, I can really see Detroit take out Chicago if they make it. Wings in my books should have taken 2/3 of the games from Chicago this year.

IMO Hawks were better in first, second was close and last maybe slight edge for Hawks.

Eff that noise, we have just as good a chance with Chi as we do with ANA/SJ and I don't have to stay up until 1:00am to watch the stinking games.

These questions, outside lineups and stuff, are so boring.

"The Kings played last night, would you like to jump on em early?"

Uhh... what the hell is he supposed to say? No? You always want to get the jump early. What the hell kind of questions are these.
