Since Nov 21 the Bruins have played 10 games and they've probably delivered a really good, anywhere close to 60 min performance in just 1 of them, against the Habs, and even in that game the scale of the win was exaggerated by Price having one of the worst games of his career. It's safe to say they're in a slump, and you can count on 1 hand the number of guys who are playing even close to their best at present.
This was always likely to happen. Cassidy was right back in September when he said that the true test of this team and its motivation was going to come in December, not October. There comes a time when that initial enthusiasm and desire to prove a point wears off and you simply have to get down to playing regular season hockey 3 times a week and just stick at it, and that's not easy, especially when most squads have fresher legs than you do. That time is well and truly here and the Bs are just going to have to dig deep and see what they can produce.
We're fortunate that the team had such a hot start because I expect that by around New Year's they'll have pretty much come back to the pack in the Atlantic. But that's fine because there's no rewards for finishing first by 20 points rather than 1. The rough grind will pass and the road to the postseason will start to become clearer. That's when we'll find out what this team is really made of and whether they really do have the desire and motivation to set themselves for another long playoff run. The quality is still there, it just becomes about wanting it badly enough. Either they'll pick up the pace again and start finding and polishing their best form, or limp along to a soft exit.
In the meantime, it's the old cliche of one game at a time and trying to find some extra tempo and chemistry to face the Caps, who are doing us no favors coming off a chastising 5-2 defeat to the Blue Jackets.
