1974-1984:

September 28, 1974 -- In the second meeting between teams from rival leagues the NHL and WHA, the Flyers defeated the New England Whalers 4-2 in an exhibition match played at Quebec. Dave Schultz scored twice and both goals were assisted by Don Saleski and Orest Kindrachuk. In the prior game, the St. Louis Blues and Houston Aeros met.
November 27, 1979 --In the first NHL meeting between the Flyers and Whalers, Philly recorded a 6-2 home victory. Mike Busniuk scored 41 seconds into the game and the Flyers led the rest of the way. Philly led 3-2 after two periods then Brian Propp and Reggie Leach scored in the opening two minutes of the third period and along with Bobby Clarke each collected two points in the final 20 minutes. Phil Myre got the win and made 19 saves. Each team was limited to four PIMs (two minors aside).
December 23, 1979 -- Brian Propp scored twice and the Flyers outshot Hartford 40-16 in a 4-2 home win which extended the team's NHL record unbeaten streak to 30 games. Propp, Reggie Leach and Bill Barber each had two points. The Flyers led 2-1 after two periods despite a 29-8 shot advantage.
December 26, 1979 --The Flyers extended their NHL record unbeaten streak to 31 games with a 4-4 draw in Springfield, Massachusetts (the Hartford Civic Center was being renovated). Capacity in Springfield was listed at 7,627 but estimates put the crowd well over 8,500 in part due to the popularity of the Flyers. Eyewitnesses claimed that spectators sat in aisles for the entire game. The game was filled with excitement and strong play. Brian Propp led the Flyers' offense with two goals. The Flyers led 4-2 in the third period but the Whalers completed a rally when Brian Hill, who was promoted to the NHL on Christmas Day, scored the only goal of his NHL career. The Whalers' Mark Howe scored twice as he returned to the lineup after missing the prior three games with back woes.
March 21, 1980 -- Rick MacLeish scored on a breakaway with exactly four minutes to play and the teams played to a 5-5 tie in their first meeting in Hartford. Mike Rogers gave the Whalers a 5-4 lead with 5:50 remaining. Brian Propp had two goals and Ken Linseman (1-2-3) and Paul Holmgren (0-3-3) each had three points as did Hartford's Mark Howe and Blaine Stoughton. MacLeish and Propp both reached the 30-goal level.
October 26, 1980 -- The line of Bill Barber (1-3-4), Bobby Clarke (0-3-3) and Reggie Leach (1-2-3) had 10 points and third-string goalie Rick St. Croix, in his first start of the season, made 24 stops in the Flyers' 6-1 home win. Tim Kerr scored his first career NHL goal at the 2:37 mark.
November 8, 1980 -- Phil Myre made 33 saves and Reggie Leach snapped a 4-4 third period tie in Philly's 5-4 win at Hartford. Rick MacLeish and Leach both had a goal and an assist. Mark Howe had three assists for Hartford. Philly led 2-0 at the 4:40 mark and held a 4-2 advantage entering the third period but the Whalers evened the game by the 3:19 mark.
November 21, 1980 -- Jack McIlhargey and Norm Barnes were traded by Philadelphia in exchange for Hartford's 2nd round choice (later traded to Toronto - Toronto selected Peter Ihnacak) in the 1982 Entry Draft.
February 8, 1981 -- Paul Holmgren, who termed the team's effort "embassassing," scored with just under five minutes to play in a 6-6 tie at Philly. After a scoreless first period, the teams combined for seven goals and Hartford took a 4-3 lead despite being outshot 31-17 after two periods. Three players scored twice in the second period: Bill Barber (2-0-2) of the Flyers and Hartford's Warren Miller (3-0-3), who later completed a hat trick, and Dave Debol (2-0-2). Reggie Leach (3-0-3) completed a hat trick with two consecutive third period goals to give Philly a 5-4 lead. The Flyers held a 48-30 shots advantage. John Garrett made 42 saves. Phil Myre made 24 stops in his final game with the Flyers; he also surrendered 5+ goals in five of his last six games. After the game, head coach Pat Quinn was disenchanted with his team's play and said "We've been giving up a lot of gift goals. The defense seemed mesmerized like they are in a vacuum." Holmgren said "It's embarrassing the way we were playing... This building is not worth a goal anymore. That is from the previous era. It doesn't seem to have the same aura as before."
March 29, 1981 -- Reid Bailey (1-2-3), Paul Holmgren (2-0-2, 100th NHL goal) and Rick St. Croix (29 saves) led the Flyers to a 4-1 win in Hartford. Bailey scored the only goal in his 56-game (including playoffs) NHL career. Bobby Clarke picked up his 700th assist on a goal by Tim Kerr who missed the prior three games with an elbow injury. Don Nachbaur gave Hartford a 1-0 lead 41 seconds into the game. Mike Busniuk fought Pat Boutette and picked up 11 of the Flyers' 19 PIMs.
July 21, 1981 -- In a major trade, the Flyers acquired Fred Arthur, Ray Allison, a 1st round pick (Ron Sutter) and a 3rd round pick (Miroslav Dvorak) in exchange for Rick MacLeish, Blake Wesley, Don Gillen, a 1982 1st rounder (Paul Lawless), a 1982 2nd rounder (Mark Paterson) and a 1982 3rd rounder (Kevin Dineen). Flyers' GM Keith Allen said "This sort of reminds me of the deals we made several years back for MacLeish and Reggie Leach. In those deals we picked up a couple of first-rounders who eventually came into their own and played a big part in our success."
November 12, 1981 -- Paul Holmgren made his season-debut and scored consecutive PPGs in the second period in Philly's 5-3 home win. Holmgren had shoulder surgery after an injury in a USA-Canada exhibition match for the Canada Cup in August and he missed the first 14 games of the NHL regular season. Hartford's Doug Sulliman scored 0:11 into the second period to even the game 1-1 prior to Holmgren's GWG less than a minute later. The Flyers outshot the Whalers 37-17. Garry Howatt and Fred Arthur fought.
March 20, 1982 -- The day after Pat Quinn's dismissal as head coach and Bob McCammon's ascension to the position, the Flyers responded with a 5-2 win in Hartford. Bill Barber's SHG, his 40th goal of the season, with 5:47 to play gave the Flyers the lead 3-2 and then Ray Allison and Kenny Linseman added two late third period goals 36 seconds apart. Brad Marsh assisted on the Flyers' third and fourth goals. The Whalers led 2-0 after one period as Mark Howe assisted on two PPGs but the Flyers rallied with second period goals by All Hill (1-2-3) and Ron Flockhart. Pelle Lindbergh made 38 saves and went 30-for-30 over the last two periods. It was Lindbergh's first NHL win in his sixth appearance after a start of 0-3-2. The game also featured a bench-clearing brawl, at the end of the first period, which saw three players ejected including Brian Propp and Frank Bathe of the Flyers.
March 21, 1982 -- Bill Barber, who returned to being a forward after a few games on the blueline, scored the go-ahead goal with 2:25 to play then added an ENG in the Flyers' 5-3 home victory. Philly outshot the Whalers 51-44, including 10 shots from Brian Propp. Pelle Lindbergh made 41 saves in picking up his second NHL career win and on consecutive dates. The Flyers started 2-0-0 with new head coach Bob McCammon and finished 4-2-2 under his guidance that season. Longtime Flyer Reggie Leach, who was scratched in McCammon's first two games, was late for a practice two days later and then placed on waivers after McCammon decided to go with younger players. "My decision is for the betterment of the hockey team," said McCammon. Greg Millen made 46 saves in the defeat.
August 20, 1982 -- The Whalers traded Mark Howe and a 3rd round choice (Derrick Smith) in the 1983 Entry Draft for Ken Linseman, Greg Adams and the Flyers 1st (David Jensen) and 3rd (Leif Karlsson) round choices in the 1983 Entry Draft. The Whalers then sent Linseman and Dan Nachbaur to Edmonton for Risto Siltanen and the rights to Brent Loney. A stumbling block prior to the deal was Howe's no-trade contract and also the lack of available talent on the Flyers' blueline, something Hartford desired in return and which was fulfilled with the addition of Edmonton as the third team.
December 11, 1982 -- The Whalers scored four times in a span of 6:10 late in the game and won for the first time in this series (0-8-3), 7-4 in Hartford. Blaine Stoughton (3-1-4), who scored in each period and had the GWG with 4:07 to play, Bob Sullivan (1-2-3) and Ron Francis (0-4-4) led the offsense. The line of Ray Allison (1-2-3), Darryl Sittler (1-1-2), who gave Philly a 4-3 lead with 7:50 left to play, and Ilkka Sinisalo (1-2-3) had 8 points. January 8, 1983 -- Bill Barber returned to the lineup after missing the prior 14 games due to a torn MCL and had five (2-3-5) points in Philly's 8-4 home win. The line of Barber (2-3-5), Darryl Sittler (3-1-4) and Ilkka Sinisalo (2-3-5) set a team-record (since broken) with 14 points. Sittler recorded his 20th NHL hat trick and had three points in the second period when Philly out-scored the Whalers 3-0. Barber also played in an exhibition match January 6 against a touring Soviet all-star team.
January 9, 1983 -- Paul Holmgren (1-3-4) and Brian Propp (2-1-3), who had a team-record (since broken) 13 shots on goal, led the Flyers to an 8-4 home win. The Flyers totalled 53 shots and Mike Veisor made 45 saves for the Whalers. Doug Sulliman (2-1-3) scored twice for Hartford in less than four minutes to even the game 2-2. Mark Howe and Bill Barber netted SHGs within 32 seconds to give Philly a 4-2 lead. The Flyers out-scored Hartford 4-3 in the second period to take a 5-3 lead into the final period. Rick St. Croix made 24 saves in the victory.
October 14, 1983 -- The Flyers got a third round draft pick, used to select John Stevens, as compensation for the unexpected retirement of defenseman Fred Arthur (acquired July 1981, demoted and retired October 1982) who refused demotion to the minor leagues to concentrate on a preferred medical career. At the time of his refusal to get into better playing shape by a demotion to the AHL, Arthur said "I'm not going. It's not just being sent down, it's something I've been thinking about for a while. It's not going in the direction I'd hoped." Arthur eventually worked at the Victoria Hospital emergency room in London, Ontario.
November 6, 1983 -- Dave Poulin (1-1-2) snapped a 2-2 tie in the third period helping the Flyers snap a three-game losing streak with a 4-2 home win. Tim Kerr (1-2-3) had three points, Brian Propp (1-1-2) tied the game and then assisted on the winning goal and Bob Froese made 21 saves. Greg Millen made 35 saves in a loss. The Flyers improved to 11-1-3 in this series.
December 4, 1983 -- Bob Crawford (2-1-3) was named the game's top star as the Whalers celebrated the team's first ever win in Philadelphia, 6-5. The Flyers owned a 7-0-1 home record in this series entering the contest. Ray Neufeld (1-1-2) scored the go-ahead goal 27 seconds after Brian Propp (2-0-2) evened the score 5-5. The Whalers were also led by Pierre Turgeon (1-2-3) and Ed Staniowski (32 saves) and scored three times in a span of 87 seconds. Bob Froese gave up six goals on just 19 shots. Ray Allison (0-3-3) and ilkka Sinisalo (2-0-2) led the Flyers. Head coach Bob McCammon said "We stunk the place out."
February 25, 1984 -- The Whalers' PP scored on their first four chances, including three in the first period, and went 4-for-6 in Hartford's 9-7 home win. Hartford led 3-0 11:26 into the game but the Flyers tied the game 4-4 on goals by Dave Brown (first NHL goal) and Glen Cochrane 61 seconds apart; both later had fighting majors. The Whalers took a 5-4 lead with 19 seconds left in the first period. Hartford outshot Philly 24-17 in the first period (Philly held a 41-37 edge in the game). Hartford led 8-6 after two periods. Tim Kerr's 40th goal brought the Flyers to within 8-7 in the final minute of regulation. Five times a goal was scored less than 30 seconds from a previous goal, including three times in the first period. Risto Siltanen (2-1-3), Tony Currie (2-1-3) and Mark Johnson (0-3-3) paced Hartford. Mark Howe (2-1-3), Len Hachborn (0-3-3), Ron Sutter (0-3-3) and Kerr (1-2-3) had three-point efforts for Philly. Pelle Lindbergh, recalled the prior day from a 10-day demotion in the AHL where he was 4-0, made 28 saves but surrendered eight goals (the ninth was an ENG). Despite surrendering seven goals, Greg Millen defeated the Flyers for the first time after an 0-11-1 start (he finished 3-18-2 in the regular season). The game also included four fights: Daryl Stanley gave Randy Pierce, recalled the prior day, a nine-stitch gash over his left eye; Ray Allison-Doug Sulliman; Dave Brown-Torrie Robertson and Glen Cochrane-Sylvain Turgeon with the Whalers' Ed Hospodar being tossed as the third-man.
November 15, 1984 -- Bobby Clarke Night ceremonies were highlighted by a six-minute, seventeen-second standing ovation for the legendary player who told the fans "Everyday was Christmas for me. Iâ€™d love to do it all over again.â€ After the emotional display, the Flyers skated to a 3-0 first period lead and won 6-1. Derrick Smith converted a beautiful behind-the-back pass from Murray Craven to open the scoring. Pelle Lindbergh made 26 saves. Tim Kerr (2-1-3) and Craven (1-2-3) each had three points. Among the comments spoken about Clarke was one by Bruins' GM Harry Sinden who said "Bobby Clarke is the greatest competitor in the history of the game - ever! November 24, 1984 -- Derrick Smith's goal, accidentally deflected into the net by Whalers' d-man Risto Siltanen, followed a tally by Mark Howe in the third period and the Flyers rallied for a 4-4 OT tie at Hartford. Rick Tocchet scored twice for the Flyers but had an apparent OT winner disallowed. Mark Johnson (2-1-3) gave the Whalers a 4-2 lead in the third period. Ray Neufeld also had three points. In OT, Tocchet fought Torrie Robertson and Tim Kerr battled Dave Lumley.

1985-1989:

February 26, 1985 -- Derrick Smith and Dave Poulin (1-1-2) scored SHGs to give Philly a 2-0 lead and Bob Froese made 28 saves in the Flyers' eighth straight win, 3-2 in Hartford. The Flyers led 3-0 until near the midway point of the third period. Mike Liut made 30 saves for the Whalers. Dave Brown won two fights against Kevin Dineen in the second period.
October 24, 1985 -- Pelle Lindbergh earned top-star honors by making 24 saves in a 3-0 home win. Ilkka Sinisalo scored in the first period then Mark Howe added an important SHG 0:27 into the third period followed by Tim Kerr's goal. The game had 106 PIMs (53 to each side) and four fights in the opening period: Dave Brown-Torrie Robertson, Ron Sutter-Ron Francis, Tim Kerr-Scott Kleinendorst and Rich Sutter-Ray Neufeld. Doug Crossman received a 5-minute high-sticking major for breaking the nose of Bob Crawford.
November 16, 1985 -- The Flyers established a team record twelfth straight victory led by Rick Tocchet's two goals in a 5-2 win at Hartford. Pelle Eklund scored on a 5-on-3 advantage, which gave Philly a 3-1 lead. It was the Flyers first road game since the death of Pelle Lindbergh. Darren Jensen played in goal, as Bob Froese (groin) was injured, and he made 16 saves on 17 shots in the middle period and was 31-for-33 that night.
November 21, 1985 -- Bob Froese recorded his eighth career shutout as he stopped 24 shots in a 3-0 victory at Philadelphia. It was Froese's first game since the death of Pelle Lindbergh. Derrick Smith gave the Flyers a first period lead. Tim Kerr and Mark Howe scored 1:05 apart midway in the third period. Rich Sutter had two assists. Mike Liut fell to 1-11-2 in 14 decisions against the Flyers.
October 18, 1986 -- With Youngblood playing at select theaters, Peter Zezel, who had a role in the film, starred with two goals in the Flyers' 6-3 road win. The game was tied 3-3 through the opening period but Zezel tallied twice in the second period. Tim Kerr (0-3-3) had three assists,. Ron Hextall made 31 saves and was 23-for-23 over the last two periods.
December 4, 1986 -- John Anderson scored in the third period and Steve Weeks made 26 saves in Hartford's 2-1 win in Philly. Earlier in the game, Anderson lost a fight to Ron Sutter. The Flyers were 17-3-4 all-time against the Whalers including 10-1-1 at home prior to this game.
March 7, 1987 -- Sylvain Turgeon scored consecutive goals to give the Whalers a 3-1 lead in an eventual 5-3 win in Hartford. Turgeon had eight shots. Paul Lawless of Hartford opened the scoring and later added an assist. Lindsay Carson of Philly had two high-sticking majors and was ejected in the second period. Lawless and Carson were dealt for each other less than a year later.
October 31, 1987 -- The Whalers overcame a 3-1 deficit and scored six straight goals en route to a 7-4 win at Hartford. The Whalers had seven scorers including Dave Tippett's penalty shot which made it 5-3. Steve Weeks made 24 saves. Each team was whistled for 16 penalties, 35 PIMs to the Flyers and 32 to Hartford.
December 3, 1987 -- Coming off a four-day mini-retreat in Lake Placid, the Flyers responded with a 3-0 first period en route to a 5-2 home win. Peter Zezel (2-0-2), Ilkka Sinisalo (1-2-3) and Murray Craven (0-3-3) led the offense and Ron Hextall made 20 saves. In a span of 58 seconds midway in the opening period, Dave Poulin and Peter Zezel sandwiched goals around a Rick Tocchet-Torrie Robertson fight. Pelle Eklund made it 3-0, the Flyers third goal in a span of 5:28. The Flyers entered the game with two straight wins and would go onto a 12-0-2 unbeaten run but owned a weak record of 8-18-3 at that point in the season.
January 22, 1988 -- Lindsay Carson, who asked to be traded because of a diminishing role, was dealt to the Whalers for Paul Lawless. Carson said, "I think they were selling me short. I never hurt the Flyers in any way. In return, I don't think I got the respect and recognition I deserved. But I'm not bitter about it.... It makes you wonder." He played 27 games for the Whalers that season then part of the following season in the AHL before retiring. Said Lawless "I'm tickled to death to be going to Philadelphia." The Flyers dealt the disappointing Lawless to Vancouver about six weeks later as part of a trade acquiring Willie Huber.
February 15, 1988 -- Dave Brown's rebound goal off a Derrick Smith shot 3:35 into OT gave the Flyers a 5-4 victory in a game aired on ESPN. Brown fed Smith from behind the net and then banged home the loose puck. Smith and Ron Sutter led the Flyers with two points apiece and both were a game-high +3. Brian Propp had a game-high nine shots. The feisty affair saw 36 penalties, 100 PIMs, five PPGs and 19 PP chances (Hartford was 3-8, Philly was 2-11). Paul Lawless, acquired the prior month, was scratched for the fifth time in ten games and a main reason was he failed to meet coach Mike Keenan's demand that all players have a body fat% of 13 or less (his was 14). Keenan said the game "had playoff intensity." Injured player Tim Kerr was on the bench helping assistant coaches. Kjell Samuelsson suffered a leg injury and missed the next four games. October 22, 1988 -- The Whalers recorded an 8-6 home win as Carey Wilson had three points (2-1-3) and the key goal to make it 6-5 with 49 seconds left in the second period. Kevin Dineen (1-2-3) also had three points. The teams split eight second period goals. Mike Liut collected a rare win against the Flyers, he entered the game 2-12-4. Mark Laforest gave up eight goals in his first start of the season. Tim Kerr and Murray Craven each scored twice. December 23, 1988 -- Mike Bullard scored with 47 seconds left in the third period to lift the Flyers to their seventh straight win, 5-4 at Philadelphia. Ron Sutter (1-2-3), who had three points in the third period, and Tim Kerr (1-2-3) led the Flyers offense and Ron Hextall made 31 saves. The game was tied 2-2 after two periods but the Flyers pulled ahead 4-2 early in the final period. The Flyers record since acquiring Bullard was 10-1-1 after this win.
March 12, 1989 -- Mark Laforest made 37 saves and Rick Tocchet's second goal of the game with 3:18 left in regulation gave the Flyers a 3-3 tie in Hartford. Keith Acton also had two (1-1-2) points. The Whalers held a 40-19 shots advantage including 16-5 in the third period and OT. Jody Hull led Hartford with two goals.
November 25, 1989 -- The Whalers scored three PPGs and Scott Young (1-2-3) and Ron Francis (1-2-3) each had three points in a 5-2 home win. Mike Liut picked up the win by making 18 saves. December 14, 1989 -- Mike Liut made 27 saves and Hartford rallied for a 3-2 win in Philly. After the game, Flyers' head coach Paul Holmgren removed Dave Poulin's captaincy and the "A" from Mark Howe's jersey and replaced them with Ron Sutter and Terry Carkner. Years later, Holmgren admitted he overreacted. The Flyers outshot Hartford 23-10 through two periods but were tied 1-1. Jiri Latal gave Philly a 2-1 lead in the opening minute of the third period. The unlikely pair of Tom Martin (the last of 12 NHL goals) and Mike Tomlak (2nd of 15 career goals) scored for Hartford in the third period. Rick Tocchet said after the game "This has to be the most disappointing loss of the season. We had a chance to take over first place, and we came up with an effort like this." The line of Tocchet, Ron Sutter and Murray Craven had 13 of the team's 29 shots and were each a +2. Among the Flyers injured and not playing were Tim Kerr, Ron Hextall, Brian Propp and Kjell Samuelsson.

1990-1994:

February 1, 1990 -- Ken Wregget made 25 saves and Tim Kerr and Ilkka Sinisalo (1-1-2) scored in the second period in Philly's 2-1 home win. Mike Liut made 32 saves in the loss. Keith Acton fought Ulf Samuelsson and picked up an instigator minor; along with a holding call to Ken Linseman, the infractions gave the Whalers a full 5-on-3 which led to their only goal.
December 22, 1990 -- Rob Brown, in his Whalers' debut, scored with one second left on a PP in the third period and Darryl Reaugh had his only career shutout in a 1-0 win at Hartford. Murray Craven and Adam Burt picked up fighting majors in the third period.
January 26, 1991 -- Pat Verbeek (2-1-3) scored two second period goals and Peter Sidorkiewicz made 34 saves in Hartford's 5-3 home win. The Whalers scored three PPGs. Rick Tocchet suffered a groin injury and missed the next five games.
February 2, 1991 -- Bobby Holik and Ron Francis scored PPGs in the first 1:33 of the second period and the Whalers won 2-0 in Philly. Peter Sidorkiewicz made 20 saves. The Flyers were absent their top three scorers: Rick Tocchet, Pelle Eklund and Murray Craven. The game started at 11:00 a.m. due to the annual Flyers' Wives Carnival (charity event) later that night.
November 13, 1991 -- Kevin Dineen was traded to Philadelphia by Hartford for Murray Craven and Philadelphia's 4th round choice (Kevin Smyth) in 1992 Entry Draft. At the time of the trade, Dineen placed second in games played in the Whalers' franchise history (second to Ron Francis). Craven was in a contract dispute with Flyers' GM Russ Farwell and earlier in the week suffered a neck injury in a Flyers' exhibition match against Team USA. Craven was scratched in two prior games and when his focus was questioned by head coach Paul Holmgren, Craven said "I didn't think he was a psychologist." He said of Farwell "A new General Manager is in and basically moved everybody out from years gone by." Both players scored in their first games with their new teams. Though Craven's neck prevented him from playing in the first opportunity with Hartford, he scored the tying goal against Boston (before the Whalers lost in OT) in his first appearance. Dineen, who suffered from Crohn's Disease, scored an ENG with one second left in the Flyers 3-1 win over Edmonton the following night.
November 27, 1991 -- Pat Verbeek and Andrew Cassals scored twice in the Whalers' 7-3 win in the Spectrum. Ron Hextall suffered a shoulder injury and was out of the lineup until December 21, 1991. Flyers' fans chanted "Paul (Holmgren) must go, Paul must go." Holmgren was fired December 4.
April 11, 1992 -- Yvon Corriveau scored twice and Frank Pietrangelo made 20 saves in Hartford's 4-2 home win. The game was the first for the Flyers since the conclusion of a 10-day NHL strike. Teams voted in the new agreement 17-7 while players supported the new measure 409-61.
April 14, 1992 -- Andrew Cassals' OT goal, confirmed by video review, gave Hartford a 4-3 win in Philly. Frank Pietrangelo made 27 saves. The Whalers rallied three times from deficits including Murray Craven's third period goal.
June 15, 1992 -- Paul Holmgren was named head coach of the Hartford Whalers. He remained with the Whalers as a coach/GM until November 6, 1995.
January 24, 1993 -- Ric Nattress' soft shot from the point, after a failed clear by Zarley Zalapski, gave Philly a 5-4 OT win over Paul Holmgren's Whalers in the Spectrum. Afterwards, Holmgren was very critical of Zalapski's play by saying "He keeps telling me he is an All-Star..." Nattress said the shot was like playing pool. The Flyers 6-game losing skid in this series was snapped. Hartford led 5-3 in the third period until Rod Brind'Amour (2-0-2) and Greg Hawgood scored consecutive PPGs with assists on both coming from Garry Galley (0-3-3) and Mark Recchi (0-2-2). Hawgood's 55-footer tied the game with 2:10 remaining in regulation after goalie Frank Pietrangelo was whistled for a minor. Terry Yake (2-1-3) led Hartford. Both teams had poor records, the Flyers 17-22-7 and the Whalers were 13-31-4. Midway in the second period, there was an announcement that former Flyer Tim Kerr had retired from the Whalers/NHL and he received a 90-second standing ovation in absentia as the on-ice officials purposely delayed the puck drop. Holmgren commented on the appreciation by saying "Because of the tragedies and all he's been through, I thought it was wonderful. He's a class guy."
February 24, 1993 -- Eric Lindros and Kevin Dineen scored twice in Philly's 5-3 win in Hartford. Philly outshot Hartford 41-27. The Flyers were 0-7-1 in their prior eight visits to Hartford, last winning in 1986. Ex-Flyer Murray Craven gave Hartford a 2-1 lead with his 200th goal but Josef Beranek and Lindros responded quickly to give Philly a 3-2 lead. Whalers' head coach Paul Holmgren said of his team's performance "It's the worst effort we've had in a long, long time and to be honest with you, I'm embarrassed by it." A brawl, which involved both goalies, happened with 2:01 to play ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eqdrP5JLudo ) . That fight was a result of an earlier incident in which the Whalers' Nick Kypreos left his skates and elbowed Garry Galley to the head ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LCQZ0S5VAGA ) which ended with Dimitri Yushkevich and Jim McKenzie fighting. Galley missed the following game, his only DNP in the 84-game schedule.
April 16, 1993 -- In a make-up game, Dimitri Yushkevich scored 1:15 into OT and the Flyers closed the 1992-93 campaign with their eighth straight win, 5-4 in Hartford. The game was originally scheduled for March 14 but was postponed due to a blizzard of up to 21 inches of snow (the prior day, the Whalers played at home to a crowd of 1,362). The Flyers outshot Hartford 4-0 in the OT. Mark Recchi, who ended the season with a club-record 123 points, joined Bobby Clarke as the only Flyers to hit the 70 assist mark. The Whalers led 4-2 on an early third period goal but Andre Faust tied the score at the 3:38 mark. Faust, who got the only assist on the GWG, recorded his first multi-point game in the NHL after being recalled the prior day.
October 9, 1993 -- Josef Beranek (2-1-3) and captain Kevin Dineen (2-1-3) scored twice in Philly's 5-2 win in Hartford's home opener. Dominic Roussel had 26 saves and an assist. All the scoring was done in the first period. After Eric Lindros made it 5-2, the Whalers removed goalie Mario Gosselin (10 saves, 15 shots) for Frank Pietrangelo (16 saves, 16 shots). Hartford went 0-for-7 on the PP. Chris Pronger, in his second NHL game, picked up his first point 1:17 into the game.
November 18, 1993 -- Josef Beranek (1-1-2) had a Gordie Howe Hat Trick and snapped a 3-3 tie then Mark Recchi (2-1-3) scored two PPGs in Philly's 6-3 home win. Yves Racine added three points (1-2-3) in his return after missing the prior 15 games due to a knee injury. Philly went 3-for-9 on the PP. Ex-Flyer Brian Propp had two assists for Hartford. The game included 35 penalties (21 to Hartford), 129 PIMs and six fights including three fight by Dave Brown who made quick work of Bryan Marchment. Brown also fought Jim McKenzie and Marc Potvin. Ryan McGill fought Potvin twice. Beranek fought Pat Verbeek. Said Flyers' head coach Terry Simpson "Tempers were a little frayed." Jason Bowen was elbowed and suffered a bloodied eye which kept him out of the next eight games. Earlier in the week, Hartford's GM/Coach Paul Holmgren relinquished his coaching duties to concentrate on his GM duties and was replaced by Pierre Maguire. Said Holmgren "I was frustrated and didn't look forward to going to the rink for practice. I enjoyed the office and dealing with other GMs." Hartford goalie Mario Gosselin (9 saves, 14 shots) suffered a bruised knee and was replaced by Mike Lenarduzzi (11 saves, 12 shots).
March 19, 1994 -- Jocelyn Lemieux scored with 47 seconds left and Brian Propp added an ENG in Hartford's 5-3 road win. Both goals were the second of the game for each player. Eric Lindros scored his 40th goal. Propp recorded his 1,000th career point, an ENG with 1.7 remaining and received a pleasant applause when it was announced.
April 2, 1994 -- Rob DiMaio scored with 1:13 remaining in the third period to snap a 5-5 tie and the Flyers, who led 5-1 after the first period, registered a 6-5 win in Hartford. Eric Lindros had (2-2-4) four points in the game, all in the first period. The Flyers led 2-0 at the 1:37 mark, scoring 15 seconds apart. Hartford had just 18 shots but scored on two of four shots in the middle period. Pat Verbeek evened the game 5-5 with 6:21 to play. John Stevens, demoted the prior day, was recalled by the Whalers who dressed just five defensemen due to an injury to Chris Pronger.

1995-1999:

January 26, 1995 --Dominic Roussel stopped 24 shots and the Flyers rallied with two late goals in a key 3-2 home win. Mark Recchi, who scored off a terrific play by Eric Lindros with 2:32, followed Garry Galley's goal which evened the game with 4:29 left. Patrik Juhlin scored his first NHL goal and slid, in excitement, halfway across the ice on his knees. It was the first victory under new head coach Terry Murray who started 0-3-0.
March 22, 1995 -- Adam Burt scored with 2:30 to play and the Whalers ended the Flyers eight-game win streak 4-3 in Hartford. Burt (1-1-2) and Geoff Sanderson (1-1-2) both had two points and Sean Burke made 30 saves. Ron Hextall made 31 stops and Mikael Renberg (1-1-2) had two points. Dave Brown floored Scott Daniels during a fight.
April 28, 1995 -- Karl Dykhuis' goal with 3:11 to play lifted the Flyers to a 4-3 victory in Hartford. Ron Hextall made 26 saves. Rod Brind"Amour (2-1-3) scored consecutive first period goals which gave the Flyers a 3-1 lead. Jocelyn Lemieux (2-0-2) scored in the second and third periods for the Whalers.
November 5, 1995 -- Mikael Renberg (2-1-3) and John LeClair (1-2-3) led the Flyers' offense and Garth Snow made 21 stops in a 6-1 win at Philadelphia. Craig MacTavish's goal with two seconds left in the first period gave Philly a 2-0 lead. The Whalers' Sean Burke was replaced in favor of Jeff Reese and both goalies surrendered three goals. November 18, 1995 -- Karl Dykhuis scored twice in Philly's 4-2 road win. Rod Brind'Amour added three points. Garth Snow made 21 saves for the win and made several key stops, especially early in the contest. Snow was beaten twice by Glen Wesley who said afterwards "I thought it was probably our best game of the year."
December 23, 1995 -- Philly scored three times in the last period of a 3-3 tie at Hartford. The Whalers led 2-0 through two periods and 3-2 in the thid period until Rod Brind'Amour tied the game. Eric Lindros had two points. Each team had 35 shots and went 1-for-7 on the PP. Garth Snow (Philly) and Sean Burke (Hartford) each made 32 saves.
December 28, 1995 -- Kevin Dineen was traded to Hartford by Philadelphia for Hartford/Carolina's 3rd (Kris Mallette) and 7th (later traded back to Hartford/Carolina - Carolina selected Andrew Merrick) round choices in the 1997 Entry Draft, December 28, 1995.
March 25, 1996 -- Ron Hextall made 21 saves and the Flyers scored three third period goals in a 3-0 home victory. The shutout was his second straight, the first time a Flyer accomplished that feat since Bernie Parent in 1973. "The team defense has been absolutely smothering. They play so well in front of me. They are making my job pretty easy right now. As a team we take pride in our goals-against average and our wins and losses. I've never been a big guy on shutouts," said Hextall. John LeClair (2-1-3, eight shots) and Eric Lindros (1-1-2) combined for five of the seven individual points given in the game. Lindros picked up his 100th point of the season, the fifth Flyer to do so.

December 14, 1996 -- Garth Snow made 21 saves for his first career shutout and Rod Brind'Amour scored twice in Philly's home-and-home sweep of the Whalers, 4-0. Five Flyers combined for the team's ten individual points: Rod Brind'Amour (2-0-2), Dale Hawerchuk (0-3-3), John LeClair (1-1-2), Trent Klatt (0-2-2) and Eric Lindros (1-0-1). December 15, 1996 -- Paul Coffey was traded to Philadelphia with Hartford's 3rd round choice (Kris Mallette) in the 1997 Entry Draft for Kevin Haller, Philadelphia's 1st round choice (later traded to San Jose - San Jose selected Scott Hannan) in the 1997 Entry Draft and Hartford's 7th round choice (previously acquired, Carolina selected Andrew Merrick) in the 1997 Entry Draft. Coffey played in the December 12th game but not December 14th.
February 19, 1997 -- Kevin Dineen scored both Hartford goals in a 2-2 tie played in Philly. The Flyers scored twice in under a minute in the second period. John LeClair and Eric Lindros combined for 12 of the Flyers 25 shots.
March 2, 1997 -- The Flyers recorded a 5-2 win at Hartford, the final game between the squads before the Whalers relocated to North Carolina. John LeClair and Shjon Podein each had two points and Garth Snow made 26 saves. Goals were scored in the final minute of each period, twice by Philly. Eric Lindros scored a PPG at the 4:23 mark while Kevin Dineen was in the box for a crease violation then, upon returning to the ice, Dineen was issued a 10-misconduct for swearing at Rob Shick something which the player later denied. Andrew Cassels got Hartford on the board to make it 3-1 with 1.6 seconds left in the middle period. John LeClair and Shjon Podein (ENG) sandwiched a Dineen goal in the third period. In the second period, Stu Grimson rifled a shot at Flyers' goalie Snow after a whistle and was issued a misconduct. As Grimson was escorted to the penalty box, Chase cross-checked Snow to the ice then landed two shots to Snow's head. Both players got roughing minors. Said Chase afterwards, "He's a yapper. He's always stabbing you with his stick. He wants to be a tough guy. I don't take that stuff from defensemen. I don't take it from the tough guys. I'm certainly not going to take it from a goalie. I'm going to knock him on his can." Dale Hawerchuk reaggravated a groin injury and missed all but one game the rest of the regular season.
December 23, 1997 -- Ron Hextall made 21 saves in the Flyers' 4-2 home win against the Carolina Hurricanes. Eric Desjardins scored 1:11 into the game and Colin Forbes assisted on the first two goals which gave Philly a 2-0 lead. Hextall missed scoring a goal by an estimated six feet with the Flyers leading 3-1 but the Hurricanes scored on the ensuing facoff with 47 seconds remaining. Hextall said "What's it been, 10 years? (since his last goal) I'm in a bit of a slump.''
January 8, 1998 -- The teams met at Carolina for the first time and the game finished in a 3-3 tie in the Greensboro Coliseum. Carolina scored in all three regulation periods followed by a Flyers goal in each period. John LeClair had three points and Chris Gratton had two points for the Flyers. Sami Kapanen and Keith Primeau each had two points for the Hurricanes. Trevor Kidd made 38 saves.
March 28, 1998 --Carolina's Keith Primeau scored the tying goal in the second period and set up the go-ahead tally 86 seconds later leading his squad to a 4-2 win in Philly. The Hurricanes ended an 11-game winless streak in this series. Trevor Kidd made 22 saves. Ron Hextall made 32 saves in the defeat. Carolina's Nolan Pratt was ejected for a checking-from-behind major in the first period.
March 29, 1998 -- The Flyers' Sean Burke made 31 saves in Philly's 3-1 victory in Greensboro. Carolina outshot Philly 22-8 over the last two periods but got out-scored 3-1. John LeClair and Dainius Zubrus scored 34 seconds apart in the second period. LeClair and Shjon Podein each had one goal and one assist. Hartford coach Paul Maurice criticized referee Don Van Massenhoven "I think the referees did a poor job. (He) called the game by the number of penalties on each side, not on what should have been called." Carolina had six PPs to the Flyers' five. October 17, 1998 -- Sami Kapanen and Eric Lindros traded first period goals in a 1-1 tie in Greensboro. JVB and Arturs Irbe each made 18 stops. Each team had just 19 shots and Carolina outshot Philly 7-3 over the last 25 minutes. Valeri Zelepukin needed 20 stitches for a cut on his chin.
November 20, 1998 -- Ron Hextall became the all-time winningest goalie in Flyers' history, surpassing Bernie Parent, with his 233rd victory in the Flyers' 3-1 road win. D-men Dan McGillis and Petr Svoboda gave Philly a 2-0 lead with second period goals. The crowd of 11,013 was the largest of the season and near-capacity at the Greensboro Coliseum.
January 9, 1999 -- Ron Hextall, who made 13 saves before being removed at the 37:36 mark due to a groin injury, and John Vanbiesbrouck (seven saves) had the first combined shutout in team history, 2-0 in Philly. Valeri Zelepukin and Eric Lindros scored in the second period. Dmitri Tertyshny missed the next four games after he took a puck off the right ankle in the game's opening minute.
March 6, 1999 -- Adam Burt was traded to the Flyers for Andrei Kovalenko who had one assist in his 13-game Flyers' career. Said GM Bob Clarke "We were not using Kovalenko and we're going to need defensive depth through the playoff run. We think that Burt is a pretty good player and is going to be a regular on our defense."
March 30, 1999 -- Ron Hextall tied a team-record for most assists by a goalie with two and the Flyers scored three PPGs but Carolina scored twice in the last period to salvage a 3-3 tie in Philly. Hextall had two assists at the NYI, November 29, 1986 and then Mark Laforest equalled the feat vs. NJD, December 4, 1988. Martin Gelinas scored the tying goal. Carolina had a PP in the final two minutes of regulation but failed to capitalize. Mark Recchi and Eric Desjardins missed this game with injuries and Eric Lindros sat out the second of a two-game suspension for cutting the Rangers' Petr Nedved earlier in the week.
October 7, 1999 -- Irbe made 30 saves and Ron Francis (1-1-2) had two points in the Hurricanes' 2-0 victory in Philly. Both goals came off turnovers by Karl Dykhuis. The Flyers began the season with two shutout losses.
November 11, 1999 -- The Flyers dominated the Hurricanes 4-1 in Philly. The Flyers held a 37-11 shots advantage including 26-5 over the last two periods. The Hurricanes led 1-0 in the first period but Eric Lindros, Eric Desjardins and Sandy McCarthy scored in the second period. Lindros (1-1-2) and John LeClair (0-2-2) factored in the first two goals.

2000-2004:

January 11, 2000 --Simon Gagne's PPG with 1:19 to play lifted Philly to a 4-3 win in the Flyers' first appearance in Raleigh. The Flyers' PP was a perfect 2-for-2 including Rod Brind'Amour's goal which tied the score midway through the third. The Flyers held a 28-23 shots edge including 11-2 in the first period. John LeClair (1-1-2) and Eric Lindros (0-2-2) led the offense. JVB made 20 saves. Hartford's go-ahead goal by Tommy Westlund was waived off when it was ruled he charged into the Flyers' goalie. The winning goal was scored during the powerplay. Afterwards, Gary Roberts said "You hate to say the referee gave them a chance to win the game but that's the way it looked." Roberts, whose 300th NHL goal gave Carolina 3-2 lead earlier in the third period, was issued a 10-minute misconduct for arguing the call as time expired. Said Hurricanes' head coach Paul Maurice about referee Rocky Trottier "Tommy had the right to go after the puck in the crease. He just makes them up as he goes. You can use any explanation that you want tonight because there can't be a logical one. Maybe aliens came down and took over his helmet, I'm not sure. Unbelievable." Lindros was whistled for cross-checking after the winning goal was scored but the Flyers killed the minor penalty.
January 23, 2000 -- Keith Primeau and Carolina's 5th round choice (later traded to NY Islanders - NY Islanders selected Kristofer Ottosson) in the 2000 Entry Draft were traded to the Flyers in exchange for Rod Brind'Amour, Jean-Marc Pelletier and Philadelphia's 2nd round choice (later traded to Colorado - Colorado selected Agris Saviels) in the 2000 Entry Draft. Primeau, a free agent who was a hold out, reportedly signed a 5-year, $22.75 million contract with the Flyers.
April 2, 2000 -- Bates Battaglia scored 1:18 into the game and Arturs Irbe made 31 saves in the Hurricanes' 1-0 home win. The Flyers outshot Carolina 31-16 in the game including 17-6 in the first period. Keith Primeau played against the Hurricanes for the first time since he was traded and afterwards said "I was hoping for more chants; you get tired of the boos after a while."
November 30, 2000 -- Arturs Irbe made 25 saves and shutout Philly for the second straight meeting, 2-0 in Raleigh. Sami Kapanen's controversial PPG late in the second period, and less than a minute after he returned to the ice after serving a minor, was allowed despite a kicking motion. Afterwards, he said "I tried to stop the puck with my skate. I was a little surprised myself that they allowed the goal." Earlier, the refs nullified a goal by Carolina's Rod Brind'Amour. Bates Battaglia added an ENG with 12 seconds left. Roman Cechmanek made 25 saves in the loss.
December 23, 2000 -- Dan McGillis scored 3:50 into OT and Roman Cechmanek made 35 saves in the Flyers' 2-1 home win. Cechmanek made eight saves during a two-minute two-man advantage for Carolina called against Jody Hull (slashing) and Mark Recchi (unsportsmanlike for questioning the call) late in the first period. Jeff O'Neill gave Carolina 1-0 lead 2:10 into the game and later said of Cechmanek "That kid played well. I thought we had some good chances to score but we just couldn't get it by him." May 31, 2000 -- Paul Ranheim was sent to the Flyers for an 8th round pick in 2000 (used to select Darren Reid).
January 27, 2001 -- Simon Gagne's (1-1-2) third period goal capped off a 3-goal rally and the Flyers won 4-3 at Carolina. Despite being outshot 20-8 in the first period, the Canes managed a 2-1 lead. Jeff O'Neill's second goal made it 3-1 in the middle period but Paul Ranheim's SHG was followed by a goal by Peter White and the score was 3-3 after two periods. Arturs Irbe made 33 saves in the defeat. Eric Desjardins and Chris Therien each had two assists.
February 19, 2001 -- Roman Cechmanek (21 saves) recorded his sixth NHL shutout and Keith Primeau scored twice in a 4-0 win in Philly. Mark Recchi (1-1-2) made it 1-0 early in the first period. Todd Fedoruk added a key goal late in the opening period off a botched decision by Arturs Irbe who decided to play the puck behind net with the intent to pass it; P.J. Stock stole the puck and fed Fedoruk. Dan McGillis (0-2-2) had two assists.
December 22, 2001 -- Mark Recchi (2-1-3) scored 27 seconds into OT giving the Flyers a 4-3 home win. Brian Boucher made 20 saves. Sami Kapanen (1-1-2) gave Carolina 3-2 third period lead but Jeremy Roenick evened the game. Sean Hill (1-1-2) scored his first goal in more than a year (November 2000). Donald Brashear, the game's #2 star, had seven shots, four more than any other player on either team.
January 6, 2002 -- Marty Murray scored twice and Brian Boucher made 29 saves in Philly's 4-3 win at Carolina. It was Murray's first two-goal game since October 10, 1995 when he scored his first two NHL goals as a member of the Calgary Flames (he scored three goals in his 26-game Calgary career). Murray evened the game 1-1 on a SHG in the first period but 13 seconds later Martin Gelinas (1-1-2) gave the Canes a 2-1 lead. Rod Brind'Amour also had two points for the Canes. Kent Manderville tied the game in the middle period. Jeremy Roenick scored the go-ahead goal in the third period while the Flyers were on the PP.
January 26, 2002 -- The Flyers led 2-0 by the 4:32 mark and 4-0 after two periods in a 4-2 home win. Jeremy Roenick (1-1-2), Simon Gagne (1-1-2) and Brian Boucher (16 saves) led the team. Arturs Irbe (13 saves, 17 shots) was replaced by Tom Barrasso (6 saves, 6 shots) after the second period. March 28, 2002 -- The Flyers were held to one shot in the opening period, 19 in the game and fell 4-1 in North Carolina. Flyers' goalie Neil Little made his NHL playing debut almost eleven years after he was drafted. Little, who dressed as a backup but never played in his 43 other appearances in the NHL, started and made 25 saves on 29 shots and was penalized with a 10-minute misconduct for taking part in a brawl late in the second period. Rick Tocchet played in what was his final NHL game due to knee and back injuries. Philly was held to just one shot in the first period and 19 in the game. November 5, 2002 -- John LeClair scored on a rebound 1:56 into OT and Roman Cechmanek made 17 saves in Philly's 2-1 OT win at Carolina. It was LeClair's 300th goal while with the Flyers. Justin Williams (1-1-2) had two points for the Flyers. Carolina's goal was by Rod Brind'Amour with Sami Kapanen getting one of the assists. Philly outshot the Hurricanes 31-18. The winning goal was confirmed only after a lengthy video review. ''It was a good play by Willie to just put the puck on net,'' LeClair said. '(Kevin) 'Weekes didn't do a very good job of handling the rebound and it just kind of bounced up. I saw it when it bounced up, so I just started pushing around, trying to get free and was able to poke it in with one hand on my stick.'' Carolina coach Paul Maurice said ''I was pretty sure it was in. Once they made a decision it wasn't goalie interference I was just waiting to leave the bench at that point.''
November 15, 2002 -- Jeremy Roenick and Jesse Boulerice traded first period goals in a 1-1 tie in Carolina. The Canes' Rod Brind'Amour became the 181st NHL player to see action in 1,000 regular season games; Roenick played in his 999th contest. Philly outshot Carolina 28-24. Roman Cechmanek and Kevin Weekes were the goalies. After the game, an irked Roenick said to the media "You guys want to keep talking about the scoring -- it's going to come. We're playing good hockey. Don't look at something negative. We're playing hard and working hard. We're playing tremendous team hockey. If you want to talk about something negative talk about our power play.'' Flyers' coach Ken Hitchcock responded to a question about the PP "I'm not even going to comment on the power play. You guys know it's struggling now. Why beat it up any more? There is a lack of confidence on the back end and it's been there for a little while. We need to just settle it down back there and we'll be fine. We're struggling with puck composure.''
February 7, 2003 -- Sami Kapanen and Ryan Bast were traded to the Flyers for Pavel Brendl and Bruno St. Jacques.
February 15, 2003 -- Kevin Weekes made 42 saves but Donald Brashear and Keith Primeau scored in the third period and the Flyers rallied to tie 2-2 at Philadelphia. The Flyers outshot Carolina 44-24. The Hurricanes led 2-0 when Sean Hill scored an early third period goal. Jeff O'Neill had two points
March 13, 2003 -- John LeClair returned to the lineup after missing the prior 47 games with a dislocated right shoulder and scored in the Flyers' 5-3 home win. Tony Amonte had a goal and an assist in his Philadelphia debut. Keith Primeau scored the go-ahead goal 59 seconds into the final period; Amonte then followed to make it 4-2. The Flyers outshot the Canes 16-3 in the third and 37-15 in the game. Patrick Desrochers made 32 saves in the loss while Roman Cechmanek made 12 saves in the win.
June 22, 2003 -- Marty Murray was traded to Carolina for a 2004 6th round pick used to select Frederik Cabana.
October 25, 2003 -- Mark Recchi's SHG with 3:10 to play lifted the Flyers to a 4-4 tie in Philadelphia. Jeff Hackett made 31 saves and Eric Desjardins had two assists. The Flyers had a PP for the last 31 seconds of OT, just their second man-advantage of the game. The Hurricanes held leads of 2-0, 3-2 and 4-3. Jamie Storr made 24 saves and Niclas Wallin (2-0-2) and Radim Vrbata (1-1-2) each had two points for Carolina. Eric Chouinard tied the game 3-3 in the third for the Flyers before Wallin gave Carolina a 4-3 lead.

The game was scoreless entering the third period but the Flyers tallied twice before the Canes responded with two goals; Niclas Wallin scored with 2:19 to play. Kevin Weekes had 41 saves including a breakaway by Eric Desjardins in OT. Simon Gagne had two points for the Flyers. Rod Brind'Amour had two points for the Hurricanes.
[*]November 28, 2003 -- Kim Johnsson had three assists and Robert Esche made 28 saves as the Flyers unbeaten streak reached 11 games (9-0-2) with a 4-2 home win. Jeremy Roenick and Joni Pitkanen scored PPGs. The Hurricanes' Jesse Boulerice, who played just 2:41, cut the Flyers lead to 3-2 in the third period. Carolina edged the Flyers in shots 30-29 but dominated the third period 17-6.
[*]January 20, 2004 -- Danny Markov was traded to the Flyers for Justin Williams. At the time of the trade, the Hurricanes were last in the NHL in goals scored. Flyers' GM Bob Clarke said "It's our opinion that a top-four defenseman is more valuable on our team than a third-line winger. We certainly didn't want to give up Justin, but we didn't have any choice." Williams said "I was definitely surprised. I didn't expect anything, but I've got nothing but good things to say about my time in Philly." Carolina's GM Jim Rutherford said "He's (Markov) certainly a player that I would've preferred not to trade. But in order to start to make changes, it's not always the players that you want to trade that you're able to trade." The Flyers made the trade due to injuries on the blue-line. "Had we had no injuries or one injury at this stage, we weren't looking for a defenseman," Clarke said. Dennis Seidenberg broke his left leg during a practice and two days later Eric Desjardins broke his right forearm in a collision with a teammate when Jeremy Roenick.
[*]March 23, 2004 -- Sean Burke made 26 saves and Branko Radivojevic had a goal and an assist in Philly's 4-2 victory at Carolina. Burke picked up his first win since February 24 and his 303rd victory moving him past Turk Broda into 18th place on the NHL's career list. Justin Williams played against the Flyers for the first time and recorded an assist.

2005-2009:

October 28, 2005 -- Carolina out-scored the Flyers 5-1 in the third period en route to an 8-6 home win. Eric Staal (3-0-3), Rod Brind'Amour (1-2-3, 22-for-31 on faceoffs) and Matt Cullen (go-ahead PPG) paced the Hurricanes. The Flyers led 5-3 after scoring twice in the final 1:58 of the middle period. Jon Sim (2-0-2) tied the game 6-6 midway in the third period. Joni Pitkanen (0-3-3) had three assists for the Flyers. The Flyers went 4-for-9 on PPs while Carolina was 3-for-7. The Hurricanes held a 37-34 shot advantage including 16-8 in the third period. Antero Niittymaki made 29 saves. Cam Ward made 28 saves in the win. Keith Primeau was a -3 and played his final NHL game after he suffered a concussion three days earlier on a hit by Alexander Perezhogin in Montreal.
December 29, 2005 --Sami Kapanen scored in OT for the second straight game, this time at the 1:27 mark, to lift the Flyers 4-3 at Carolina. Kapanen became just the second player in NHL history to score OT goals in consecutive games. Michael Handzus assisted on the tying and winning goals. Antero Niittymaki made 25 saves Matt Cullen had two goals and Cam Ward made 36 saves for Carolina. Philly outshot the Hurricanes 40-28 including 4-0 in OT.
January 17, 2006 -- Rod Brind'Amour's shootout goal lifted Carolina to a 4-3 victory in Philadelphia. Martin Gerber (23 saves) sealed the win when he stopped Jeff Carter in the 4th round. The extra sesssion was tied 2-2 through two rounds but Eric Staal and Simon Gagne both failed in the third round. The Flyers led 1-0 through two periods and 3-1 in the third but Erik Cole knotted the game 3-3 with under four minutes to play. Freddy Meyer (1-1-2) was the game's only multi-point scorer.

It was the fifth time a defenseman scored a SHG in OT since the 5:00 overtime period was instituted in 1983-84. Gagne stopped a pass from Derian Hatcher with his skate and netted the OT winner for his 400th career point. Mike Richards' PPG in the third period tied the game 2-2. Danny Briere had two assists. The Flyers finished a perfect 4-0-0 homestand and started the season 6-1-0. November 21, 2007 -- Danny Briere (3-1-4) had his first Flyers' hat trick and Mike Knuble added three points (1-2-3) in a 6-3 win at Carolina. All three goals by Briere came in the third period. Philly trailed 1-0 after 20 minutes and were outshot 10-3. The Flyers took a 2-1 lead into the final period in which they out-scored the Canes 4-2 despite being outshot 15-7. December 15, 2007 -- Rod Brind'Amour's ricocheted shootout goal lifted Carolina to a 6-5 win in Philadelphia. After Danny Briere missed the first attempt in the shootout, the next five shots were successful. Brind'Amour didn't record a point in regulation, something he accomplished in each of the prior six games (2-4-6) against the Flyers. Unofficially, Brind'Amour had 5 goals, 12 assists and 17 points in 27 games against the Flyers for Carolina (also 2-for-2 in the shootout) through this game. The Flyers rallied from deficits of 3-1, 4-3 and 5-4. The Flyers outshot Carolina 41-34. John Grahame made 36 saves. December 11, 2008 -- Scott Hartnell (3-0-3) had a hat trick and the Flyers equalled the greatest comeback in team history with a 6-5 shootout victory in Philly. Carolina led 5-1 after two periods but the Flyers rallied from a 4-goal deficit for the second time in team history (also February 23, 1988 at Detroit). The Flyers started the rally when Hartnell scored a SHG 1:42 into the third period and then he completed his hat trick 5:30 later, the 11th time a Flyer scored a hat trick in a regular season game. Scottie Upshall scored with 4:52 left in regulation and then Simon Gagne evened the game with 1:44 to play. Gagne and Mike Richards scored for the Flyers in the 2-0 shootout round. Antero Niittymaki made 26 saves in the game and was 2-for-2 in the final round. Michael Leighton (32 saves), Eric Staal (2-1-3) and Tuomo Ruutu (0-3-3) led the Hurricanes. David Laliberte, who scored his first NHL goal on his first shot, became the 20th Flyer to score in his NHL debut, the first since Mike Richards (Oct. 5, 2005) and the first to record multiple points in his debut since Justin Williams (Oct. 5, 2000). Jussi Jokinen scored 24 seconds after Philly went up by three goals then he tied the game with 3:13 to play. Jeff Carter (2-1-3), the game's top star, followed Chris Pronger's (1-1-2) go-ahead goal late in the second period to put Philly up 3-1. The Flyers improved to 12-0-3 in the last 15 games in this series in winning for the sixth straight time. Dan Carcillo gave Philly a 1-0 lead. November 11, 2010 -- Jeff Carter's (3-0-3) second career hat trick led the Flyers to an 8-1 win at Carolina. Carter scored three straight goals which gave Philly a 4-0 lead and it was the 15th natural hat trick in team history. It was the Flyers largest victory margin since beating Atlanta 7-0 in October 2008. The most recent time the Flyers scored eight goals was December 2007 (8-2 win vs. Pittsburgh). Carter snapped a scoreless tie 18 seconds into the third period then Briere made it 2-0 about eleven minutes later. Tuomo Ruutu got Carolina on the board 11:27 into the third period, 40 seconds after Briere's goal. The Flyers' PP was 2-for-6 and the PK was a perfect 6-for-6. February 18, 2011 -- Erik Cole scored with 3:03 to play and Cam Ward made 21 saves in Carolina's 3-2 home win. The Hurricanes led 2-0 6:37 into the game. Entering the game, the Flyers won the last nine times the teams met, held a 15-0-3 record in the prior 18 games and had lost in regulation just three times in the last 38 games. Braydon Coburn tied it at 2-2 with 5:11 to play, his first goal since November 18, 2010. Blair Betts' SHG cut the Hurricanes lead in half, 2-1, and ended a 44-game scoring drought. The PK went 7-for-7 and ended the night 44-for-48 (91.7 pct.) in their last 13 games. The Flyers entered the game with a 9-0 record when scoring a SHG. The Flyers had 27 blocks to Carolina's 11 but one was by Betts during a successful 3-on-5 two-minute kill late in the second period which prevented him from playing in the third period. October 29, 2011 -- Ilya Bryzgalov made 24 saves and the line of Claude Giroux (1-3-4, +4), Scott Hartnell (1-2-3) and Jaromir Jagr (2-0-2) helped the Flyers to a 5-1 home win. The Flyers out-scored the Hurricanes 4-0 in the third period and got key goals from Jagr, 39 seconds in, and Max Talbot, whose SHG came at the 5:46 mark and gave Philly a 3-1 lead. Carolina's lone goal came as a result of Hartnell who slid into Bryzgalov and knocked the goalie out of position. November 14, 2011 -- Claude Giroux (2-1-3) scored twice in the Flyers' 5-3 win at Carolina. Chris Pronger (0-3-3), Matt Read (1-1-2), Jake Voracek (0-2-2) and Jaromir Jagr (0-2-2) all had multi-point games. Sergei Bobrovsky made 18 saves. Patrick Dwyer (2-0-2) scored two SHGs for Carolina, the first coming with under one second (0.9) remaining in the first period to cut Philly's lead to 2-1. Giroux and Wayne Simmonds scored in the opening seven minutes of the second period to give Philly a 4-1 lead. At that point, Cam Ward was lifted (13 saves, 17 shots) for Brian Boucher (10 saves, 11 shots). Dwyer then scored another SHG, this time on a penalty shot which narrowed the score to 4-3 early in the third period. It was the second consecutive Flyers' game in which a SHG was scored on a penalty shot (the prior night, Matt Read scored at Florida). The Flyers increased the lead to 5-3 when Read scored on a nice feed from Voracek with under four minutes to play before slamming into the boards. The Hurricanes attempted 91 shots to 41 for the Flyers; that includes a 42-24 shots advantage and the Flyers blocking an unofficial team-record 32 shots to 7 for Carolina. Joe Corvo scored 7:58 into the third period for the Hurricanes to tie it 3-3. Jakub Voracek gave Philly a 3-2 lead 15 seconds after Carolina's Jeff Skinner tied the game in the second period. Jiri Tlusty gave the Hurricanes a lead 17 seconds into game. If they lose this one today and don't register an even strength goal for the 3rd straight game they need to fire Lavi. They need to get someone new in ASAP so they can at least start tweaking the system before they fall too far back. Waiting 2-3 months before canning Lavi will do nothing to help this team get into play-offs if they are 10-15 pts behind the 2nd wildcard team.

THe other games I was really hoping that they won but this game for some reason I really have a good feeling that they will. I think they just need to break out of their scoring drought and tonight can be the night. Obviously that won't solve all our problems but if they can just start scoring at 5v5 it will make everything better. You know that Giroux is super angry at himself and the team so I'm looking for him to have a big game and to jump start the offense. I also hope that Mason gets the start.

Pretty sure only reason we lost is we took too many penalties and all refs fault. Sounds like all is good as long as we don't take pens or play a good goalie.
