I watched the video of the goal that wasn't counted for Russia. It seems the puck actually touched Shashkov's stick after it hit his skate.

(at 02:32)

Why was no overhead view shown? That would've been the best way to make the call.

I can understand how posters like Scrantonicity2 and others don't want to acknowledge that US might be a dominant hockey country. People in other countries feel sure, let US dominate in basketball or baseball because those sports are Big Time mainstream sports in the US. But hell no should US dominate in hockey which is maybe only the 4th most popular (maybe golf is 4th? Or is NASCAR 4th?).
I see this in soccer as well. For example, Mexico hates the thought of US being THE soccer (sorry, football) power in North America because for so long Mexico dominated. Furthermore, soccer is Mexico's #1 sport so it would be galling to have US overtake when soccer isn't #1 (or even #2 or #3) in US. Basically, it would suck for other countries if US became a powerhouse in a sport which isn't #1 in the US but is #1 in another country.

I don't get it. USA had been very strong in hockey for a long time and continues to be. I like strong competition as a Canadian or I won't even watch. I still feel Canada is significantly stronger and deeper in talent despite this result. Short tournaments are vastly overrated anyways.

New one. They were spreading that "Everyone hate us here, because russians, crowd is against us, reffs are against us" during the whole tournament. Cold War atmosphere in that locker room.

Cmon. There’s a anti-Russian bias in NA hockey. It’s thinly veiled, but palpable.

Look at Slava Malamud. He’s a nobody who markets himself as a Russian insider who NA media routinely give credence to because of his ‘Russia is evil’ schtick.
You think the media would give him the time if day if he didnt do that? Yeah right. Lol
Keep in mind, the media caters to the wants and wishes of the public; particularly when it cones to sensationalism.
We, ourselves, are still very much stuck in the cold war.

I'd defer to Kostins comments. They had zero intention of getting that call right.

Did you also see the puck touch his stick, as I did? I think Team Russia needs to learn how to beat US or Canadian teams by fair margins when they're on home ice, just so as to avoid such situations. The penalty that led to the 2nd US goal was also a bad call imo, I didn't see tripping there.

Hehe, Don Cherry is like the specialist on "hating on those Russians" :).

Go on sports.ru and scroll down all articles during this weak about WJC. Pretty much every interview is about reffs hate us/crowd hates us, since game 1 when Russia took bunch of penalties against Czechs.
I know this is speculation but when you play in another country it is typical for coaches to instill an everything is against us/no one believes in us mentality. It builds camaraderie and cohesion and can help the team focus. If it were the US or Canada playing in Russia I wouldn’t mind that type of approach and tactic.

One was shown on NHL Network a couple of times. I looked hard to see if it touched and it appeared to not touch. Very difficult to say that it did in any case. Also, Shashkov’s muted reaction after the goal would seem to indicate that he knew it wasn’t a goal.

Has anybody disputing the no goal call actually bother to look up the actual IIHF rules regarding kicking the puck? It's a pretty clear cut no goal case according to them.

RULE 96 – GOALS WITH THE SKATE
i. No goal will be allowed if an attacking skater directs the puck into the
goal net with his skate in any manner.
ii. If an attacking skater kicks at a puck and it is subsequently shot into
the goal net by either that skater or a teammate after the goaltender
has made a save, the goal will count.
iii. If an attacking skater kicks the puck and it deflects directly off the
goaltender or his equipment, or off a skater from either team and into
the goal net, the goal will not count.
iv. If an attacking skater turns his skate in any manner with the intention
of directing the puck at the goal, and the puck enters the goal net as
a result of that directing, the goal will not count.
v. If an attacking skater tries to kick the puck from his skate to his stick
but fails to gain possession of the puck with his stick before the puck
enters the goal net, the goal will not count.
vi. If an attacking skater is jostling with an opponent and during this
time he directs the puck into the goal net while trying to maintain
his balance, the goal will not count. Directing the puck is the sole
criterion, not the jostling with an opponent.
vii. If an attacking skater has the puck on his stick and kicks his stick to
propel the puck into the goal net, the goal will not count.

As for the video above that purportedly shows the puck going in off the stick after the skate I suggest watching this video that has the inside the net camera angle 30 seconds in...

The puck clearly does not touch the stick as it enters the net directly off the skate so as per rule 96 subsections i., iv., and v. The correct call was made. No goal.

Kostin acknowledges the audience as he accepts his bronze medal the following day. The crowd returns the favor with applause when he receives the bronze trophy.

Actually, it's not that clear from this angle. Only the overhead view would have made it clear.

Part of being a Russian hockey fan who speaks English is having to swallow the anti-Russian bias. Listen to their TV guys, its palpable. The reason is that is accepted and appreciated from the public. You would never hear them trashing a North American player, particularly a NHL player, because there are consequences for that. The trashed player will have his own constituency to defend him. No one in NA defends Russians, so it is easy to say something incendiary against them get away with it. Kostin helped it along by being a drama queen, but the anti-Russian bias in the Canadian crowds and among the officials is real as hell!
