Or just staple him to the 3rd line, give him clear goals and tell him not to worry about the scoring, and promise that they'll let him walk at the end of the season so he better start treating his final months in Edmonton as an audition. It's not like they'd save much money putting him in the minors anyways, and they're already hurting for bodies.


Holland absolutely f***ed up giving him that contract and bringing him back. Puljujarvi tanked the second half the season, and it was pretty clearly a bad bet that he'd recover after the rumored tantrum about the lack of ice time in the season exit meetings.

Teams walked away from better players than Puljujarvi last offseason, while the Oilers refused to accept that their attempt to pump and dump didn't pay off and cut their losses.

He was more than worth his contract also for the whole previous season, not just the half of a season you wrote about. So his first contract was fine, but the extension is a different case.
