Ansar Khan: Red Wings' Jonas Gustavsson gets second start of season as Detroit faces pesky Blue Jackets

DETROIT – The Detroit Red Wings will turn to backup goaltender Jonas Gustavsson to be their stopper Saturday afternoon against Columbus at Nationwide Arena (2 p.m., Fox Sports Detroit).

Not to stop the season-best run they've been on lately (5-1-1), but to reverse their fortunes against the cellar-dwelling but pesky Blue Jackets, who have won three in a row.

Columbus (8-12-4) has gained five out of a possible six points against the Red Wings (12-8-4) and has won the past two meetings between the teams – 4-2 in Columbus on Feb. 2 and 3-2 in Detroit on Feb. 21. Detroit won the first meeting between the teams, 4-3 in a shootout, on Jan. 21 in Columbus.

This is the Blue Jackets' 12th season, and they have never won the season series from the Red Wings. The closest they came was 2008-09 when they went 3-3-0 vs. Detroit before getting swept in the first round of the playoffs by the Red Wings.

This marks the start of the second half of the season for both clubs. They wrap up their five-game season-series Sunday at Joe Louis Arena (5 p.m.). It is reverse jersey weekend, so the Red Wings will wear red on the road and white at home.

Special thanks to FlashyG for the modified graphic ;)

I know it's not as sexy as a Flashy GDT, but it gets the job done. Refs (tbc), Gustavsson starting (no graphic yet) and preview hasn't been uploaded yet.

Now would be a good time to get going on the road...

These next two games are the most crucial we've played all season. We're currently in fourth points-wise, but we've played a few more games than others. So building a little cushion between us and 5-8 would be really nice.

I hope Babcock eventually gives the Smith - Kindl pairing a chance when they prove they can play this way consistently. I think that could be a really really awesome second-pair.

Wings games are much more exciting when our young guns are playing, there just seems to be way more energy and just a buzz around the entire team. And I actually think KH is realizing this by telling Andersson to get an apartment. Let's hope Gus can get his chance next.

Wings win 5-4. The defense is due for a bad game and I'm not sure what to make of Monster her. But the offense is due for a good game and our third line should dominate CBJ's, that's where I expect the production to come from.

Nice GDT Propain,

Hopefully we can get our **** together against the BJs, so far they seem to bring out the worst in this team and we can't afford to lose these next 2 games.

Thanks. Updated. NHL preview said that Dubinsky was on IR. So no Dorsett then.

I also went off the CBJ GDT for last game.

We know what we'll get in Howard for the most part... Gustavsson is still a big questionmark... the 2-1 SO win against the Sharks is too small of a sample size. What kind of Monster will we get today?

Nice GDT ProPAIN

With Chicago finally losing this is our first chance to make up 2 points on them.

Columbus hasn't been friendly to us this year so hopefully our defence keeps playing well.

Dorsett done for the season with a broken clavicle from the Vancouver game on Thursday. One reason for the 2pm start is state finals in Nationwide for high school hockey today.

Line-up from here: http://bluejackets.nhl.com/club/blogpost.htm?id=15059 is
Calvert - Anisimov - Atkinson
Umberger - Johansen - Foligno
Prospal - Letestu - Boll
Gilies - Brassard - MacKenzie

Tyutin - Johnson
Erixon - Aucoin
Nikitin - Prout

Bobrovsky

Dubinsky is iffy I think.

Wait... the Blue Jackets are getting bumped for high school hockey? :shakehead

Isn't the game tomorrow at 5 in Detroit? There's some sort of 24 hour rule too. Both teams might prefer the 2 pm start today rather than getting to Detroit at ~midnight tonight for tomorrow's game.

Apparently it's Brunner's birthday today. Thank god I put him in the spotlight and in the youtube clip ;)

My streak of visiting coverage continues.

Haven't had Mickey and Ken since the 2nd of February.
