A defense that is not designed to hold late leads can’t hold late leads.

Puck moving dmen who can't defend, wild isn't it?

As much as Severson and Provorov are better than what we had, they still aren’t what we NEEDED on D. Add in Werenski, and while some like to hype his defensive ability up, goal 3 last night was a perfect example, and reality is that all 3 guys ARE NOT great defenders and Werenski may be the worst defender of the 3.

I wanted Zadorov before we added Gudbranson. I’m now interested in adding him ALONG with Gudbranson. Would be something to put those 2 on the ice together in the defensive zone.

Can’t even say it was a big brain fart by Provorov, he was clearing it, and Cousins somehow managed to get in front of it
Yet, if it had been Gudbranson, how many posts would there have been talking about how he’s barely an NHL player?

Completely agree with the first point, especially Werenski, dude has no urgency or energy defending. How many time a game does he let Severson go retrieve the puck on his side of the blue line? Unless that's some odd system quirk, it feels like pure laziness.

After looking at that Provorov gaff again, I'm wondering wtf he was doing trying to flip a puck through 3 guys. You are correct about Gudbranson, he's been this team's best defensive dman and I'm not sure what that says out about the other 5.

Serious concerns about the construction of this blue line both now and long term.

I think they're all playing their games and being themselves, but they're mostly mismatches for each other's styles. I don't really have true complaints about any of them individually, even Bean, but the construction just doesn't work. But that's the hardest thing in team building, and it's not like this is the defense we're stuck with as we actually become competitive. Look at Toronto or Edmonton.

I think anytime your outshot 20-1 in first 7 minutes of a game , coach isn’t remotely going to blame the goalie . We could pick in choose a shot maybe he should have saved , how many breakdowns on that one shift by multiple players lead to that shot . There’s no sugarcoating it , team wasn’t ready to play from the get go , but also there is confusion on their defensive system .. it’s probably been preached to stay in the collapsing position and players are not even going for 50/50 puck battles .. I’d be curious what attack time was first 10 minutes of game .. Lots of winnable games being squandered , but what’s different is they are competitive night in , night out now .. so it’s big progress …. To me it’s ludicrous Jarmo has all these extra young players , and they aren’t in Cleveland , yet they aren’t playing nhl games either . Boquvist is what , 23yrs old ?

I’m not going to be too hard on Provorov because this is his first major blunder this season. Shit happens. Sucks it happened when it did, but it is what it is.

I didn’t think Severson was bad. At least no worse than others.

While Gudbranson has maintained his solid play this year, I think Bean has slowly started regressing to his previous year form.

Werenski is fine but I’d like to see him more up in the play offensively. It feels like he’s being held back.

Werenski - He's a steadying presence and looks like a #1 defenseman. Not too happy with his powerplay performance. Needs to be snappier on the point at pivoting the puck.

Jiricek - Foot speed is an issue but otherwise he looks like a future top-pairing guy.

Provorov - Quietly good. He's stable most of the time and I like his play in transition, especially coming back into the Jackets' end. Needs to work on exit passing. Also, needs to not be on the Powerplay.

Severson - Nothing glaring aside from his 1-2 major gaffes a game where he makes a bad decision. But for most of his shifts he's quietly acceptable.

Gudbranson - Happy with his play this year. He belongs on the bottom pairing but I like his physicality.

Bean - Started out strong but has tailed off a bit. He should be sharing time with Boqvist in my opinion.

Peeke - I've seen enough. He should be the one traded in my opinion.

Boqvist - Major issues carrying the puck and winning battles. I still think he should be dressing as a powerplay specialist.

Provorov didn't have a good powerplay rep coming into the year but he's been important there early on. On for 6 goals, 5 assists, 4 of them primary assists. No one else has been on the ice for more than 4 powerplay goals. Werenski's unit hasn't been on for any.

I haven't seen a ton of Severson mistakes, but he's generally not a particularly stout defender. Seems a bit weak in his end. Good passer but not a lot of great plays so far. If you imagine his few great plays cancel out his few massive gaffes, you're left with a milquetoast player. You'd wonder how he got such a huge contract. I guess many of us were wondering that before the year started, it's just still a mystery.

That’s what I thought.. Werenski is constantly out there for 1:30 and no goals , Pp2 has been scoring.
