When did hockey fans become such complete *****es? Calling for a guy to get suspended because he beat up your player? I can't even relate to that nonsense.

Eller acted like a loser by celebrating a meaningless goal and had to face the consequences for his actions. Back in the 70s, it was a regular event and the games had far less bull**** because of it. There was never a question of not answering the bell then too because you were going to get beaten either way.
Couldn't tell you.

I'm all for getting the garbage no skill goon style stuff out of the game, but anyone who has a problem with what Marchand did here should find a different sport.

Haggs already had this written up before the game ready to go.

I imagine it went something like this for Haggs as he watched

After the 1st goal

After goals 2, 3 & 4

And finally after goal #5

You steal a base when you're up 10-0, you get plunked.
You bat flip a home run when you're up 10-0, you get plunked.
You bunt for a hit when you're up 10-0, you get plunked.

I see no real difference here. Eller did a drive by on the Bruins bench, then had words with them and he got a beating.

Agreed. Age old tradition in sports, the problem is it’s so rare in hockey now it stands out.

I suspect Cassidy will be given 4 or 5 games at most to straighten out the issues, otherwise it will be time to blow it up.

I don’t live in the MA area but it seems like certain reporters absolutely root for them to lose and it makes them happy.

For Haggs it depends on who’s in net

And tbh, it’s the one thing I don’t really have a problem with as far as his opinions. Rask does raise a lot of ????’s and it’s frustrating

I thought the team was crap in front of him but some of the goals he let in didn’t help either

When has Krejci ever had a wing with "blazing speed"?

I have an issue with all the diatribes about the second line, and it's not just because of Heinen. That line was not good offensively, but to be honest that looked like it was primarily on Krejci, who had a bad night. Krejci doesn't need "blazing speed" on his wings, he just needs guys that can read the play and go to the open spaces his cutbacks and "slow-downs" create. There is no reason why DeBrusk and Heinen can't be those guys.

The main issue to me is that DeBrusk went to China, while Krejci and Heinen stayed home. DeBrusk played with Donato and one of the young centers instead of staying and working on creating some chemistry between new linemates. Same thing happened with the first line, and the 3rd line, where Backes was almost exclusively with Frederic. Hindsight is 20/20, but the B's should have kept 74, 46, 43 home and let them play together. If they knew they wanted 17, 52, 42 as a trio, take them to China and have them play together.

Defensively, the 2nd line was much better than the 1st. They were "even" for the game, while the 1st line (and Chara) were minus 2. They consistently made the Caps work to get out of the zone, which slowed down the transition game. It looked to me like the other lines were forechecking too deep with two guys, not getting the puck and it was allowing Washington to make one outlet pass and come out of their zone with speed.

The only changes I would make for tonight would be UV in for Grizz and Bjork in for someone, probably Acciari. I would also consider swapping Pasta and Heinen to create more balance, and give the team a good mix of shooters and passers on the top two lines.
That’s a good point. I just see Heinen and Krejci’s skillsets as very similar, maybe it’ll workout with more chemistry.

As for Bjork, I see Cassidy more likely to swap out Donato. Acciari is close to Blihd levels of bad in my eyes so I’d be fine with sitting him. Donato really wasn’t that much worse than Marchand.

so true, speaking of which, I see Haggs is already on the over reaction train with the "In a big spot Rask freezes up again" headliner....good lord, game 1 of the year:help:

Was Rask good, nope, but big spot? Game 1 is now a big spot? Ugg

Has Marchand become our new enforcer?

If Mandatory could ever come up with a "Hide posts related to Haggs" button, I'd pay money for that. That's how much I don't want to read his stuff. He's such a hack.

if you hear of such a button and you require a contribution, please reach out to me:laugh:

Honestly, he`s never been a Tuukka guy and my biggest beef with Haggs is his lazy journalism.

"- Most No. 1 goaltenders thrive in the big moments, doing their best work on the big stage and under the bright lights."

Not an untrue statement HOWEVER, is game 1 of an 82 game season that stage of which he speaks about?

Haggs then glazes over the fact the team in front of him "wasn`t ready".....umm, pretty kind there Haggs, the team in front of him lacked any focus, their puck pursuit was non-existent, no focus and they all seemed content to sit back and watch the Caps chew them up and spit them out with no fight back

Yeah, push the Tuukka headline but gloss over an ugly 18 skater effort, good news is the team surely didn`t expend too much energy last night and should be well rested vs the Sabres

It`s not just the fans friend, media too, softer than butter. I`m one who cringes and calls out the BS stuff that Marchand gets himself into at times but I have no issues with what he did yesterday.

Unfortunately I had long turned off the game and didn`t see the celebration but I like what Marchand did. I jumped online this morning, TSN, story about Marchand "jumping" Eller, Sportsnet the same BS

I "think" you are of an age when you can recall a league where perhaps there were too many goons but at least it was one where, for the most part, guys looked after themselves and fought their own battles and there was nothing in the NEWSPAPER the next day about guys jumping guys.

I recall reading an article after a Habs/Nordiques game and if not mistaken, prior to the game going on the air teams got into it in the pre-game warmup and the paper stated little more than "things got heated" prior to opening puck drop. Not now

It wasn't that there were too many goons back in the day, but that literally everyone in that league knew they had to drop the gloves if called on. So there was more fighting, and more people willing to fight. The funniest stuff to me today is the planned polite fight between two enforcers. They know their job and they go about it like a business. There's no ill will or bad intent. In my youth, Terry O'Reilly only threw punches with bad intent. If you youtube the fights from back then, most of the time it was one guy throwing a hay maker out of the blue at another guy, and then they'd fight. Today, the fans would be screaming for a guys head for assaulting another player.

Exactly. I hate goons and polite fights because it's what the goon on each team is supposed to do, but real fighting over something stupid that a player did helps police the game.

Julien not using Backes as a center absolutely blew my mind. The same Claude Julien who loved himself some Chris Kelly at the end of his career (when Kelly's legs and feet were done), and fell head over heels for a very slow-footed Finnish center named Joonas Kempainen.

Yet he didn't want Backes in the middle because of his skating?

I still say this Backes as a permanent RW is Julien's fault.

That exactly.

It only made sense if he was on the first 2 lines but if you use Backes on the 3rd line then he should have stayed at C.

I love Brad. ALWAYS puts forth 100% effort. As long as there is no more licking he is a favorite of mine

For one night only he is my favorite Bruin. I’m sure he will do some stupid tonight to make me remember why i dislike him. Supremely talented, just a bit too careless/selfish at times.

But last night? That’s the type of thing that has to go a long way in the room. I still can’t believe how many people are so bent outta shape over it.

Leave it to Marchand to FINALLY do what no enforcer/fighter could ever do for this team in what seems like 20 years. Shawn Thornton sure wishes he had a time machine now that he can see how it’s done. It’s a fight. You aren’t here to act like gentlemen.

Anyone see this coming? Anyone? Bueller?

Truthfully, i thought Rask was pretty bad last night. A couple good positional stops off the shoulder, and the lucky pillow save on the bang bang play in front that really just hit him instead of the wide open net. His lateral movement was dreadful and his puck handling obviously worse.

BUT, the whole team was equally as suck, so I’m not pointing fingers at any one player or group of players. That was the epitome of a team loss.
