I like Vatanen, but would NJ be willing to part with him? Wonder if we could swap a guy like Kapanen for him and then trade picks for Stone...I'd lean towards D, but adding some variety/longer term Marleau replacement wouldn't hurt.
Vatanen is my target as far as a D goes (Pysyk or Jensen are back up options). I'm also tempted by the idea of getting Saad as reclamation project, but it's a risky move.

Johnsson - Matthews - Nylander
Hyman - Tavares - Marner
Marleau - Kadri - Stone
Ennis - Lindholm - Brown
Reilly - Vatanen
Gardiner - Ozhaginov
Dermott - Hainsey
RW, C and LD is nuts on that team
When Nylander is on your third line and second PP you do not have a need at forward.
The fact is that we have a unique year this year and we will need to shed some salary. We have Nylander, Marner and Kapanen on the right side, while Johnsson is probably our best offensive option on the left... so if im looking at Johnsson, Kapanen and Gardiner all needing raises, im probably taking the guy in our deepest position and transferring that to our weakest (RW to RD). Vatanen on right D is money better spent than Gardiner playing on the left side and his contract expires after the marleau crunch, where we would have the option to re-sign him if we want to.Then Stone walks next year and Vats contract ends soon as well, doesn't it?
Big gamble on this year.
Agreed, although the leafs stars will always play significantly less minutes than their peers due to how much depth there is with two #1 lines.A star left-winger in the mold of someone like Landeskog would take one of our top lines on par with Colorado's. I don't know where we can find that left-winger though. He basically does all the Hyman does, but is also a good offensive player.
