[Signing] Colorado signs former Canuck (and streaker) Nathan Smith

On April 27, 2008, Smith was arrested and charged with indecent exposure after he was observed streaking in Scranton. He claimed he was acting on a bet.

I always liked Burke's drafting, he's quite good at that. I hated his arrogance and his inability properly fix large holes (COUGH GOALTENDING COUGH).

I hate Nonis for giving away picks like candy on Halloween for bad players. Like him a lot for acquiring Luongo and finding Hansen, Edler, Raymond. Not a great drafter but he's not awful.

Pat Quinn and Messier. Just always remember those days.

Burke's drafts were hit or miss, and mostly miss after the Sedins.

  • His first draft - 1998 netted Allen, Chubarov and Ruutu.
  • The next year, 1999 brought us the Sedins, who by the time they finish their careers they will own every offensive record and possibly end up in the HHoF.
  • The next 3 years netted Kevin Bieksa and R.J. Umberger, but then Burke failed at negotiating with him and Dave Nonis ended up giving his right away for rentals.
  • His last year brought us Ryan Kesler.

So while the top 3 offensive players and one of our top 4 defensemen on the current team were drafted by Burke, that's all he got. Bryan Allen was sent to Florida in the Luongo trade and Chubarov signed in Russia. Ruutu left as a FA.

Dave Nonis's drafting was much better - but he has 2007 on his resume - an absolutely dreadful draft. In his first 3 years he got Hansen, Edler, Schneider, Raymond, Bourdon and Grabner, then got NOTHING in 2007. In 3 years, Nonis drafted more NHL players than Burke did in 6, then there was 2007, and Nonis never had a top 3 pick like Burke had in 1999.

Burke had awful draft years in terms of overall talent though he had higher picks.
Bryan Allen (4th overall)
Brad Ference (10th overall)

You have to give him credit for pulling off the Sedin deal and avoiding Patrick Stefan

1998 through 2003 weren't the best of draft years, but there was value there to be had. In 2002 for instance, Burked picked Kotsov and Grot at #49 and #55 in the second round and Duncan Keith (#54), Matt Stajan (#57) and Jiri Hudler (#58) were picked just after.

In 2003 we got Kesler, and Richards who was picked right after is pretty much equivalent. But then we picked M-A Bernier at #60 and Max Lapierre and David Backes were picked at #61 and #62.

In 2001 R.J. Umberger was a good pick at #16. But in the 3rd round, Burke took Fedorov at #66 and Tomas Plekanec went at #71.

In 2000 Burke took Nathan Smith at #23 and Brad Boyes (#24), Steve Ott (#25), Justin Williams (#28) and Nicklass Kronwall (#29) were picked shortly thereafter.

Hindsight is always perfect, but Nonis did much better with less favourable picks.

When you really look at it...

It looks a lot like we're weaker at the top of the pool now, but stronger at the bottom in terms of 'fringe guys' who might actually make the NHL some day in limited roles.

Neither is particularly inspiring tbh.

I'm a believer that high-end prospects are a lot more important than the 6-20 guys. At the end of the day, only 3-5 guys on these lists will ever make an impact at the NHL level. That being said, the top 5 on a list can be very questionable when you put Brandon Reid over Ryan Kesler.

Agreed. Hindsight is always 20/20. I don't understand why the Canucks don't put more effort in finding better scouts. Say what you want about our drafting position or lack of picks but it's what you do with what you have that really matters. The Canucks have never been a strong drafting team. I wish they would invest in poaching some of the better scouts out there.
