Read first caught the attention of NHL teams two years ago with his sensational performance in the NCAA Tournament and guiding the Beavers to their first D-I Frozen Four appearance. Since then, Read has continued to play at a high level and NHL teams are still following him.

Read centers Bemidji State's outstanding speedy top line with sophomore Jordan George and fellow senior Ian Lowe. This season, the trio has accounted for 43 percent of the Beavers' total offensive output. The Illderton, ONT native currently ranks second on the team with 31 points (18 goals, 13 assists) playing in 34 games to date. His 18 goals and plus-six lead the team. Where Read has really excelled this season has been on special teams. Of his 18 goals, seven have come on the power play and three have come shorthanded. Both also lead the team.

Read is a 5'10/185 lbs centerman that is quick and really fun to watch. He is an excellent skater with a good burst of speed and quick feet. He may also have one of the best first gears in college hockey as well. Read does a great job of finding and exploiting open spaces both in creating and finishing plays. He is elusive and difficult to contain. Read possesses excellent passing skills and on-ice vision. He transitions well and can make plays at high speeds. One attribute that has made Read so successful is his relentless drives to the net. He is not afraid to go into the dirty areas and plays remarkably well in high traffic. Read also has the ability to make players around him better and plays with a never-say-die attitude. Perhaps one of Read's most underrated attributes is his defensive side, which is quite good. He is an effective shot-blocker and solid on his forechecks as well.

Exactly. He's another roll of the dice, and hopefully a couple will hit. If he's good enough to play in the NHL someday, he'll either be a Flyer or a tradeable asset.

He is to old for the NHL rookie system, players who are 25 or older can sign every contract they want. Read is 25 at September 15, the cut-off date.

Another "why not" signing, but a lot of people think he has some potential.

And honestly, it's not like Erik Gustafsson, Ben Holmstrom, Sergei Bobrovsky, and Mike Testwuide are failing completely if at all.

Signings like this are low risk/high reward with the reward being solid depth guys who might make the NHL squad if all goes well.

Matt Read was an impact freshman in his first season with Bemidji State in 2007.

His attracted a fan following for his goal-scoring abilities, but it is the other skills he developed over his BSU career that have made him a sought after prospect by National Hockey League teams today.

“He’s been the best player on our team since he came here as a freshman and that’s very uncommon. That’s why he’s a special player,” BSU head coach Tom Serratore said. “He’s such a total player now: he’s better playing away from the puck, excellent on draws and he’s pretty good defensively.”

Take Tuesday’s practice for example. Read sacrificed his body to block a shot during a drill – something uncommon and maybe even unexpected from the leading scorer and team captain on a hockey team.

“He’s got depth to his game. Every year he’s become more and more versatile,” Serratore said. “That’s why he’s so attractive to the NHL right now because he’s an all-situation type player. He was a complete player when he came here, but he’s even more of a complete player now to the point where the game has slowed down so much for him out there.”

We're at 39 contracts for next year.

UFAs - Zherdev, Leino, O'Donnell, Boynton, Boucher, Ryan

RFAs - Carcillo, Nodl, Powe, Syvret, Bordson, Kalinski, Legein, Klotz, Stewart, Sestito, Clackson

Probably Leino, Sestito, and 2 of Carcillo, Nodl, and Powe will be staying. Boucher and O'Donnell will make a claim.

The rest are probably gone.

Sadly I think we are slowly moving away from Da Costa. Most likely because we cant promise him a spot on the big club right away.

Im no expert on hockey talent, but I can say ive seen this kid play being that I live in bemidji mn and have season tickets too the beavers. He is a great kid, great leader that leaves everything out on the ice. He is very good at alot of things, kind of a jack of all trades type of guy. He played at a small school with very little talent around him and was still a point per game guy with no one around him. He played against good talent and whether or not he ever pans out, this is a low risk, high reward signing. he is a natural leader and a great guy in the community. There have been teams trying to get him too leave school the last few years. He is older and will have to stop up fast because he really doesnt have much time to develope being he is in his middle twenties. Ill root for him no matter what.

Why couldnt we sign costa too? If its because we couldnt promise him a spot on the big club, then the reed signing has nothing to do with that. We cant promise him that no matter what can we?

It might mean no Da Costa, but i think signing Read has nothing to do with the flyers chances with him. The flyers prospect pool is very thin, and they will need help soon. The flyers have only 17 players signed for next year and are 2 mil under the cap already. Even if the cap goes up by 3 mil, that leaves five million to sign a second line winger (Leino), third line winger (Nodl), a fourth line winger (Powe), a sixth defenseman, and a backup goalie. The following year Coburn, Carle, JVR, and Versteeg are up. All but Versteeg will be due a significant raise, especially with defensemen's salaries going up and up. Trades are likely this offseason and next offseason. Cheap talent will be needed to fill those vacancies.
