Flyers pull goalie approximately 1 minute after being eliminated, gift Caps playoff spot

I just finished watching the Caps alt-cast replay to check on the real-time gap, and the host monitoring the DET-MTL game updated the Perron goal basically as the puck dropped with just over 4 minutes left to play. There were no stoppages in PHL-WAS between that faceoff at 4:02 and Torts pulling the goalie with around 3:15 left to play. The ENG was scored with 3 minutes left, and Torts indicated he learned about the Detroit goal at that stoppage. If that host's update is the live feed, then the video coach watching for Philly basically has to wait out if Toronto is looking at it because it's in the final minute, so has to wait for puck drop at center to confirm, which takes 30 seconds or so. That leaves about a 15 second window while the puck is live to relay a message from video->assistant->head coach, while the puck is live, to change the goalie pull.

Edit to add: I checked the timestamps on the Detroit goal, and Perron's shot went in at 2:32:36 on the stream, and puck was dropped at 2:33:50, and the ref was still talking to the timekeeper in that 2:33:30 area, so closer to 90 seconds on the time between goal and puck drop.

Who cares? Torts doesn't owe the Wings anything. Maybe he wanted to screw over a rival. Maybe he wanted to troll the NHL. Maybe he just wanted to win the last game. Moot point.

Wings dropped critical games including a 7-game losing streak. They left their fate in the hands of another team while having back-to-back dog fights with a lottery team.

As a Wings fan I am hoping this scenario plays out like it did for the Lions after the last game in Green Bay in final week of '22 season.

You're in need of a lobotomy if you believe the Caps (worst goal differential of any playoff team in 40 years) "deserves" to be in the playoffs.

So a team that has 5 more regulation losses than wins "deserves" to be in the playoffs over a team with more regulation wins than losses, because they were better at a gimmick?

Sure, that makes sense.

They still had no problem beating the Red Wings twice to get in, so perhaps neither of these teams deserved to be in, but the better one still did get in.

Deserve really doesn’t matter. They qualified per the rules of the nhl.

Are either Wash or Det really PO worthy? Probably not but someone in the east had to be WC2.

Detroit’s breakdown is:
27 Reg wins. 32 reg losses
11 OT wins and 3 SO wins. 9 losses in extra time.
Wash’s breakdown is:
32 Reg wins. 31 Reg losses
4 OT wins and 4 SO wins. 11 losses in extra time.
I totally dislike the Caps, but considering the record they deserved it more than Detroit.

Flyers were just desperate pulling the goalie for a regulation win, in the heat of the moment things like this happen, especially when the standings are so close. But no matter how it goes, only one thing is sure: Flyers will always let you down, you can bet your whole money on this. 😉

What? The games were all going on at the same time. What do the Flyers care about any other team than the Flyers? Going into the game all they know is they need 2 regulation points to stay alive. Nothing else is their business. Whether WSH or DET gets in is irrelevant to them
Torts should have stopped coaching and switched to watching the Wings game on an iPad to inform all his coaching decisions once the games got close to the end.

According to someone on the internet…..

Hilarious thread. What you think that Torts is watching the Wings game on his phone while coaching behind the bench for the Flyers?

The timing makes for an interesting story but not sure what else there is to say about it. The Wings lost 12 out of 15 in March, maybe they should blame that for missing the playoffs instead of external factors.

All you need is 1 person on the bench to have access to their phone and looking at the scores or receiving texts.
3rd line center?

This is one of the dumbest arguments I’ve ever read on the internet which is really saying something.

Every person on the bench in an elimination game should be focused on doing their job to help their team win. Full stop.

The notion that the team has some responsibility to monitor other games going on in real time is insanely stupid.

Well, no, they did matter, hence why this thread.

Red Wings got the point, season over for the Flyers...and they still proceeded to pull the goalie.

Well maybe the Red Wings shouldn’t have coughed up a 10 point lead in the standings?

Blaming Philly because the team went on a 7 game losing streak and lost their spot is pretty petty.

The Red Wings this season only got close to the playoffs because they were the 3 on 3 kings. Even their final 3 game win streak all came on 3 on 3 OT. They lost the tie breaker to every playoff team due to their poor regulation play.

The Red Wings this season were 27W-32L in regulation, they didn’t deserve to make the playoffs. Every playoff team in both conferences was above .500 in regulation. 3 on 3 pumped their point totals quite a bit.

In a point system that is actually good (aka the 3 points for regulation win, 2 points for OT/SO win, 1 point for OT/SO loss, 0 points for regulation loss system and regulation wins is tiebreaker 1 and goal differential is tiebreaker 2) this would be the current standings with 1 game left and that game would between the Penguins and the Islanders.

Capitals: 123 points
Penguins: 120 points
Islanders: 120 points
Red Wings: 120 points
Flyers: 117 points

With this point system both the Penguins, the Islanders and the Capitals would still have a chance on the playoffs going into the last day of the regular season for the Eastern Conference.

Way to close to say all that, Flyers had to win in regulation. If anything, the lack of Detroit getting any calls is more worrisome. With TV rating, TV money, and other factors in all of sports today, Seems to be to many fingers are on scales, and want certain outcomes within sports today. Does NHL want a last playoff run by either of their two superstars left alive? Ovi or Crosby?
Come on.....

Red Wings had the second best penalty differential in the NHL this season. +42

Detroit has nobody else than themselves to blame, this was the easiest year to get in in the East and they melted down

So don’t really understand the people saying Detroit/Detroit fans should be mad at the Flyers

Crying about the Flyers (or even the Caps who definitely got lucky here) makes no sense but it kinda breaks my heart even as a non-Wings fan to see them come back from behind in the dying seconds to win two crucial games only to realize they got eliminated on some empty-netter. It would've been an amazing story for them.

I don't really care. It's Detroit's responsibility to get Detroit into the playoffs, not Philadelphia's.

If Detroit couldn’t make it past this crapitals team in the trash heap that is the east, then they kinda have no one to blame, but themselves.

Sure, but the guy I responded to implied the Wings were not deserving in some way that the Caps were.

8-3 Red Wings win
3-4 Caps OT win
1-2 Caps win (Wings won shots 43-23)

So decisive!

Why would it need to be more decisive? Caps got a point. Had Wings gotten that point, they'd be in. But they didn't.

Blaming someone else for your team coming up short is kind of silly but whatever suits you. It's certainly not like Wings had everything on their own hands for like 10 different times in the last 2 months.

This is a cute/funny conspiracy theory but I'm sure my fellow Wings' fans know the Wings have no one to blame but themselves. At one point we had a 10 or 12 point cushion from being out a playoff spot... even within a few points of overtaking the Leafs. Wings choked hard this last quarter of the season going 8-14 during March and April.
