Ok, anyone who was in the Military, Management etc. knows you need to have a plan. So they have no plan after firing AV? Just put an interim coach in there and hope for best? If you worked for a company that finally fired the bad boss and just put in a person who is interim would you listen to that person? This style of Management should be taught at Wharton school on how how NOT to manage!!

It’s not an exact carbon copy. As you can’t even really ice a goon these days. But they do have a tendency to rely too much on low to no upside players who usually check those gritty, tries hard, etc. boxes.

And the Flyers didn't ice "just goons" in those days either. It was a different era. People who are limited to YouTube clips or cloudy videos of fights are limited in what those teams accomplished. I can paraphrase Phil Esposito and state "They played offense and defense and goaltending and... better than anyone else for two years." The Flyers beat an Original Six franchise in 1974 (Rangers) by those components but also the penalty kill against a killer PP machine at the time... best in the League but that doesn't resonate in a highlight clip. And then the Bruins who weren't exactly intimidated by The Broad Street Bullies. They also didn't beat Buffalo in 1975 by fighting. The Flyers have not had much positive luck since those days. Injuries, even death, hurt this franchise at inopportune times. Playing the Islanders + Oilers of the 80s, the Canadiens of the 70s, the Red Wings, the Blackhawks, all teams on the verge of things special didn't help and the team lost for different reasons. And as we know, injuries factored in 1976 and 1987 probably most often in that mix. But those debilitating injuries also surfaced in 2004 when the team didn't advance beyond Game 7 of the ECF. Sad, but all it would have taken is one Cup win since 1975 and we wouldn't have to live with "Broad Street Bullies" as if it is some sort of vice. It is unfortunately the only time the team won Cups.

That isn't meant to omit self-inflicted errors, too. The Flyers are more pronounced than others because we remember those blows.

Yeah the goonery lore probably underscores the talent level of the team. Probably underscores the last time the organization was really cutting edge for it’s time period.

Funny thing, the Flyers were the "David" in the 1980s battles against Edmonton's "Goliath." It is just in those cases, Goliath won. The Flyers were a team of few stars. They were a team by any other description. The fact that those of us who remember 1980 are still pissed and would put someone euphemistically through a wall if emotions were involved says something about that season. But 1987 remains a different feeling. It wasn't the refs or the NHL. It was those damn injuries and how a perfect season -- archrivals in NYR, NYI and MONT were the defeated in the playoffs - and then the culmination being a Cup title. It would have been the victory celebration to end all victory celebrations. Beyond compare. That team was cherished in a manner that could not be described without having the first-hand experience. Then again, whether it is the Cups of the 1970s or the near Cups of the 1980s, that is the past and we need to look forward. That said, part of the torture of today is tied to the afflictions of the past.

The talent level of the Bullies never gets the respect it should.
Parent: Best goalie in the league
Clarke/Macleish/Kindrachuk: best 1-2-3 punch up the middle in the league
Great depth on the wing and while they didn’t have a real #1 D, they had 5-6 guys who were all good top 4 players.

Plus they had a smart, innovative coach and the shrewdest GM in the NHL

f***, I miss that team

Losing Kerr just killed them in 87, that pp was insane. And yeah, I can’t think of 1980 without going into a fit of murderous rage!

What Dave Poulin did in Game 7 against the Islanders with the Flak Jacket should be incorporated into every facet of Flyers' fandom and lauded throughout the halls of the NHL as a testimony to spirit and vigor and how the hockey mindset has few equals. People have no clue what that man did. The injuries in 1987 were ravenous.

Was at that game, the moment he stepped onto the ice for warm ups the Spectrum exploded. Imagine a team so beloved that the building was packed for the pregame warmup.

The 1972-1989 era of Flyers hockey was spectacular

I feel like re-writing "We Didn't Start the Fire..." Clarkie, Snider's son, Farwell, Lindros, Clarke again, Hextall , Back to Clarke, Hextall again, Neilson, Clarkie returns yet again. I could do it. :sarcasm:
