The slump is real. We're bound to have a stretch of bad games after being pretty steady for most of the season.

Maybe a 7 - 6 game tonight considering all the skill in this game.

I'm sure Burke will be approached by media.

Didn't realize we were playing tonight but really need a big win here. We already had a stinker against these guys earlier in the season (courtesy of Jhonas Enroth), let's get that one back.

Game day: Calgary Flames at Toronto Maple Leafs
Flames' Bennett has gone 11 games without a point.

RADIO: Sportsnet 590 The FAN

KEY PLAYERS

Matthew Tkachuk, Flames, and Auston Matthews, Leafs. Tkachuk entered Sunday fourth in NHL rookie scoring with 30 points, behind Matthews (38), Patrik Laine (37) and former junior linemate Mitch Marner (37). The sixth pick in the June draft, Tkachuk was second only to Marner in rookie assists (21) and tied for second among freshman with a plus-9 rating. Matthews, in addition to being the top rookie scorer, led all first-year players with 155 shots, 41 more than Carolina’s Sebastian Aho, who was second.

NEED TO KNOW

The Flames gave up three goals on the first four shots of the game in Saturday’s loss to Edmonton, allowing the Oilers to sweep the four games in the Battle of Alberta this season. They also allowed the first four goals of the game in a 4-3 loss to Nashville on Thursday. But Calgary was still clinging to a wild-card berth in the West, as of Sunday, one point ahead of Vancouver . . . The Flames need more from forward Sam Bennett, who has gone 11 games without a point and was a healthy scratch Thursday . . . Chad Johnson hadn’t allowed more than two goals in five January starts before the Nashville and Edmonton games, when he allowed seven goals on 25 shots. That might have opened the door for the inconsistent Brian Elliott (8-11-2, .893 save percentage).

Who To Watch

Flames – C Sean Monahan

A bright spot during a rough stretch for the Flames, Monahan is riding a career-best five-game goal-scoring streak. If he can tickle twine again Monday is Toronto, he would equal the longest spree in the NHL so far this season. Nashville’s James Neal enjoyed a six-game tear in November. It’s been a streaky campaign for the 22-year-old Monahan, who racked up a point in 10 straight dates from Nov. 28-Dec. 19 but has also endured his fair share of multi-game dry-spells, including a couple of five-game scoresheet disappearances. Monahan notched his latest marker on a short-handed breakaway in Saturday’s home loss to Edmonton, upping the Flames’ total to league-leading eight strikes on the penalty-kill.

Maple Leafs – C Auston Matthews

Duh. Dating back to his dazzling four-goal debut, the Calder Trophy frontrunner has made it clear that he’ll be must-watch material for a long time. Matthews has nothing to show for his past two contests, noteworthy because it’s the first time since mid-November that the 19-year-old centre has been blanked in back-to-back outings. Wow. The first-overall prize in the 2016 NHL draft, Matthews leads all rookies – and is tops on his own team – with 22 goals and 38 points so far. (Calgary’s Matthew Tkachuk currently has 30 points, good for fourth among freshmen.) Matthews will represent the Maple Leafs this upcoming weekend at the all-star festivities, likely his first of many trips to the mid-season showcase.

Injuries

Flames: RW Garnet Hathaway (upper body) is day-to-day.

Maple Leafs: D Morgan Rielly has missed two dates with a leg injury. RW Ben Smith (hand) is on injured reserve.

Tkachuk and Marner up there in rookie scoring, remember when Dvorak was the reason for their success in London.

Marner is projected to be similar to the next Gaudreau, so this will be interesting to compare them head-to head stylistically today.

Marner and Gaudreau aren't really as similar as people make them out to be.

Marner is more aggressive with how he plays and has a higher motor. He also brings more to the table, when Gaudreau isn't scoring he's not really doing much else and he's horrid defensively.

The guy in the Leafs system who actually has the most similar style to Gaudreau is Bracco.

If we win tonight = We're a playoff team
If we lose = Sky is falling, trade everyone, rookies were a fluke going to score 0 points in 2nd half of season, tank nation etc.

Will be interesting to see. IMO, they were flat the last two games. They didn't have the intensity. My none expert opinion would be the young players were starting to get too comfortable thinking they will win like they were not playing at 100%.

If we could have got that Tkachuk pick in that draft I would have traded everything not nailed down to get the picks support our D second order. Math, Ny, Mar, Tka, Kap long term... What a team.

I would have given Calgary JVR, 1st 2017 and whatever throw in for that. This years draft is meh

I don't doubt that some were serious about it, attention seeking does take effort.

Sure Dvorak would be nice but not at any cost, certainly not for Matthews.
Tkachuk would be the guy you'd want from that line anyway. Look forward to seeing him tonight.

And Tkachuk already plays well with Matthews. A line Tkachuk Matthews nylander/brown would be very very good.

Tka is a gem. If we want to spend a package of picks and vet help its worth it. Jvr, Bozie retained, this years 1st b prospect and take a cap dump while at it. No problem.

I know he is totally core untouchable but a guy can dream right. I really prefer developing D over getting someone's problem. They are usually really sucesful when used in a certain system over time and when you take the pretender top 4s out of the system they flop. Really good all systems and situations D are hard to get.

I also remember a lot of people were really dreading Tkachuk at #4. Or, worse, at #3 ahead of PLD and JP. It was almost a suicidal level of dread. Similar sentiments were expressed 2 years ago when the topic of picking Carlo with the late 1st pick came up.

Moral of the story - don't lose your marbles over certain players!

I have got to admit, I wasn't sure about Matthews and his abilities, he was a dark horse in his path to the top of the draft list, like playing in Switzerland and I thought something is amiss, I know now he is a great young player and I now fully support him as a great choice from the draft.

I wanted OEL, Dvorak/Strome and Domi in a trade for that first (Matthews) and that I thought would solve our Defense issues our centre issues and add some toughness on the wing and the Coyotes would get their home town boy but Ariz. would not trade OEL so it was a no trade scenario, Dvorak was not the key player I wanted it was OEL.

It probably would have. I would have attempted to trade Domi for the pick that grabbed Tkachuk though. This team would be good that way as well for sure. There are many ways to go about making a team.

I never do. I'm a bit flabbergasted about just how good Tkachuk has been though. I thought he would for sure be good, but I envisioned a relatively limited ceiling. He's pretty much better already than I ever thought he'd be.

Really you didn't see it in him? One of the safest picks to make are the sons of NHLers. They have the best coaches, the best trainers etc. You may notice a pattern in me wanting former players kids on the team. Its not without reason, sure there will be an Ashton Carter but many go on to be productive. Getting Warrens son Kerby Rychel was a no brainer even if he has warts.
