Fire Eakins Chant

Why do you want to start a 'fire Eakins' chant? The team is at home and needs the support of the fans. Lets give them a chance - and try to give them positive energy. I get the frustration, but you said so yourself, your chant won't matter anyway. What would speak volumes is a loud and long cheer(s), with 'lets go Oilers' chants, large ovations after good shifts and 'you'll do better next time' shouts if someone has a bad shift.

We do that for 7 games - see where we stand after that. That would, should, 'embarrass' the management to do something if we go 0 - 7 but last night I thought was a much better effort, just couldn't finish as Vcr really played well in their zone.

Very happy about Hamhuis too - at first I thought he lost his eye. Glad to see him come back.

Which should we go with?

Eaaaaa-kins.

Eaaaa-kins.

Or...

Fi-re Eakins *clap* *clap* *clap* *clap* *clap*

Fi-re Eakins *clap* *clap* *clap* *clap* *clap*

The first one sounds much more annoying, but it's easier to get the crowd into the second one. People like clapping.

Good idear. The classic goalie chant should ruffle some feathers. I can't see how you can get booted for that.

I would also think that a few people would actually chime in to that tune.

It's a seven game homestand. Why not just support the team as much as possible so that they may try to get out of the hole? This next six games could make or break the season.

Contributing to a negative home rink atmosphere doesn't help anyone. It makes it worse for all the other fans. That's just how I see it.

Eakins might not be the right guy, but I don't think chanting right now is going to help at all.

Yep. My buddy's a season tickets owner as well, so it beats me. I've heard they don't allow people to bring paper bags last year as well. I guess fans have to suffer with their hard earned money watching a horrible team without being able to rally.

If you can't wear a paper bag, get creative. I suggest Mickey Mouseketeer hats. Gretzky's old comments coming back on his Oilers has a nice karmic symmetry.

This isn't a serious suggestion. I suggest you cheer for the players on the ice, not protest against management at games.

But if you're gonna protest, at least try to make Sportscentre by being a little original/entertaining.

I've been an incredibly loyal fan since '96 when I was 6 years old. I still watch every single game and don't know why I put myself through it.

I'm not dumb enough to think getting a chant going will cause this Mickey Mouse Operation to make any change. However, as a fan I should be able to voice my opinion at the games. I don't see how this can be scoffed at and have you tell me I lack class.

There is no accountability in the organization and maybe over time the fans can provide some

Hey man, I hear you. But if you are serious about making a statement or eliciting some kind of accountability, this is not the way to do it. By your own admission, it's pointless. The best you can accomplish via this method is to send a message that says, "I've had enough of this crap. But not enough to, you know, actually stop going to the games."

These fan chants are one of those trends that seems to have gained increasing momentum in recent years, and as an observer it just strikes me as childish. That's the sort of thing we used to do in grade school. Whenever I hear the Montreal faithful do that stupid "Ole" chant, or fans in any building mock the opposing goaltender by repeating his name over and over, I can't help but think one thing: Grow up.

Stay home if you want to make a point. No franchise was ever turned around because the fans invoked their right to behave like schoolgirls teasing the fat chick at the playground. Empty seats, on the other hand... that can be deafening.

Either way, I hope you enjoy the game.

So chanting is ineffective, and we could never get people to stop going to games. We're doomed.

I have to disagree with this. The guy is obviously a fan of the Oilers. If he were to stop watching games, that makes him indifferent, not impactful. You're giving up you're favor for the team (ie, being a fan) when you lack all action that displays favor.

As opposed to him showing displeasure towards the events he normally favors?

What's funny is I actually made a pact with myself I would not go until the Oil were above .500! The last game I was at was the game we smoked Vancouver in the lockout year, I'm sure you all remember it... we chased Luongo like 5 minutes into the game and I want to say after the win we were in 8th place. I think right after that we won 1 of our next 10.

I decided to abandon my pact when a day after the 5-4 loss to Van my buddy called me and offered to take me to the game on Monday because his dad (who has season tickets in the lower bowl will be out of town). I even thought to myself, maybe they'll be at or above .500 by then. HA, how funny does that seem now.

As much as I wish I could just not care and not go and not support the team I can't help it. I love this stupid team and always will. It's called loyalty.

Perhaps chanting is childish, in fact it probably is, but so be it. I'm a fan of this team and I should be within my rights to chant or boo or cheer as I so please. I want Eakins gone. You guys may want MacT gone but I disagree. So Eaaaakins ... Eaaaaakins ... it will be.

Also, who remembers the Belfour chants. I thought those were awesome (I was a kid in those days) but was there anything wrong with that?

Love the idea, however remember the guy who was escorted out by security for his "Fire Lowe" sign? Be prepared to be thrown out by Fuhrer Lowe and his cronies. Can't let the peasants get too restless.

Northlands rules say that that signs/banners can't

cannot be distasteful in nature or content
cannot obstruct the view of other guests

That's probably where the problems are/were. No Gestapo secret police run by Lowe conspiracy.

Focus on Lowe. Eakins will just be replaced by the first rookie that strokes MacT's ego hard enough in his interview. Lowe must go, then all the other pieces can start following into place by the team acting like a professionally run organization. That is...as long as Lowe isn't replaced by Messier or some other guy from the OBC.
