Fine. But you need to exclude Stamkos from the Lightning if you're going to do that...you're cherry picking picks that go as far back as 2004. 14 years ago. How about we compile 5-10 homegrown players that are decent within a 5 year span instead
One of his greatest strengths is cap management, imo, but he's made some underrated moves. Getting Callahan for a TB legend was bold and has paid off in the locker room big time. Dealing away a potential stud in Drouin for a prospect was a gamble.
His free agent pickups have been pretty nice. Stralman was huge.
You can create whatever culture you want, but you can't have success without the right players. That's the bottom line. Of course you need good people to develop and coach them, and Yzerman gets credit for hiring Brisebois and the coaches in Syracuse. Like I said, he's a decent GM, at least. But a great one? Don't see it. If the scouts had missed the great players they found, there'd be little for Yzerman's staff to have developed. There's nothing in Yzerman's resume that indicates he could've built a championship team without all those great prospects. It's not him who deserves being pumped up, it's his scouts.Players don't succeed based on their draft. The organization they go to plays a huge role in creating, or diminishing, opportunities to succeed. Yzerman has built a culture of success that did not exist prior to his arrival.
