As far as I have seen, Dale Hunter is the answer with 79 points as his single career high. Shane Doan looks like he will retire but his career high is 78 and he is only 28 points away from 1,000.
Maybe someone like Hakan Loob: http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/pdisplay.php?pid=3198
429 Points.
Only 83 players have scored 1000 points? Wow.

Now how about lowest career total for a 100 point player

I immeditately thought about Jacques Richard and Blaine Stoughton actually. They might just be #1 and #3. Didn't think about Loob because I thought he played a lil' more than he did.He looks to be the answer. I think Hakan Loob is probably 2nd on the list. I've gone through a lot of the 100 point list now.
This doesn't answer the particular question, but I assume Toews will hit 1,000 points and his season high is 76
Patrice Bergeron also have a decent chance at getting to 1000. His best season was 73 points.
Obviously you have to remove injury plagued seasons and find someone who played 80 games. I cannot remember who it was but one of the Northeast teams and I'm almost sure it was NJ, Rangers or Pitt had a child pass away just before the seaosn started back in the early to mid 90s and he was one of the more elite guys. He ended up playing the entire season and was just downright atrocious relative to his career, maybe 10-15 points total and I clearly remember it being talked about. Whether he was a 1,000 point career guy I don't know but probably very close to it.
