Ok but men getting paid public money. Probably shouldn’t be fighting.

These police forces have millions upon millions of dollars. One guy getting hurt in a fight is a drop in the bucket. FDNY and NYPD have sanctioned boxing matches agianst each other.

You just don't understand the game and rivalry then. No one or entity is 'having' them fight.

They don't like each other and it happens.
Excuse me? I lived in NYC for over 25 years and watched plenty of these games. And have known a bunch of guys who have played in them. And yes, HAVING them fight is incredibly stupid. They're freaking amateurs playing a charity game.

Meatheads gonna meathead I guess. Enjoy.

End of the third period in the annual NYPD vs FDNY charity game, these guys drop em off a faceoff and the firefighter TKOs the cop 😮

Just stupid

To the surprise of literally no one, it just goes to show that the Police force is just loaded with hot heads.

NHL game is one thing but this is just a glorified pick up game.
Yeah one hockey fight by one guy = police force loaded with hotheads

You keep saying 'having' them fight as it it's being forced or manufactured or planned ahead. It's not. Maybe it's just semantics and you really mean fighting should be explicitly banned in these games, and to that I'd say it technically already is, it's a penalty...

These guys genuinely don't like each other and they play really hard and chippy, so it just kind of happens. You're not gonna get rid of fights, if they tried to do that, i'm sure a lot of the guys including high end players would backout and the event wouldn't be what it is.

"I can't legally assault some guy I have a professional beef with so I ain't playing"

That's incredibly stupid.

At least all the other fights we see in this end of the forum are with legit NHL guys and they can get through some games.

Cant decide which is more cringy, them getting into a fight, or the firefighter's reaction after he won the silly fight vs a guy probably 12 years older than him.

Well it might be stupid to you, but it's not to a lot of other people.

It bears repeating, Fighting in these games is a 5 minute major and zebras can try to break it up if they can, like any other league. I'm not sure what you want to do differently or propose. I simply don't think guys would go for anything like an automatic Game Misconduct if they fight. And forget something likea year or permanent ban on the game....non starter.

They know how emotional and heated the games get and know fighting is a likely outcome. Plus it helps sell the game. If you tried to outright ban fighting, it would really hurt ticket sales, and thus merch/concession sales, for better or worse.

For a charity game between emergency responders? Yea, ban it.

THANKFULLY no one was hurt and the EMTs didnt have to come on the ice. But it would be pretty funny if such an event like that did happen, and the EMT also decided to buy into the rivalry and picked a fight with the other first responders

I used to play on a team with a police chief. By no fault of his own, he took multiple concussions in on-ice collisions. In order to protect his job -- which was by no means as physical as a beat cop -- he had to quit hockey completely. It was either that or take a job that didn't require split-second judgement with lives on the line.

So yeah, when I see a cop getting KO'ed in obvious-concussion fashion during a charity game, that raises some questions about what the hell these guys think they're doing.

Again, you continue to show that you are not very familiar with this rivalry and event...

It's as much or more a heated and competitive rivalry game as it is a 'charity game'.

And whether it's right or wrong, potential violence is a big part of marketing it and it making sales. Remove any chance of fighting, and the interest and sales in the event plummets....

I don't know, the cop didn't really look keen to fight, probably felt obligated to. Also, looks about 15 years older than the fireman. I get what you're saying about the rivalry though, it's gonna happen. The dorks from Spitting Chiclets getting hyped up for fights in this game and geeking out over them is pretty pathetic though.

Have you seen the shit that goes on in beer league games with weekend warriors? It's pathetic.

Yeah.

I've seen league-league, like over-under 30, over 40 etc...when the championship is on the line it can get wild.

I've also seen the casual summer league where no shit goes down at all, it's skate / have fun.

The only time in history when you can "legally" hit a cop and get away with it.

Silly to have this in a charity (or rivalry) game like this, no matter how heated, etc. it is. And someone mentioned how some of these players were at one time higher levels players.....still....you shouldn't have to be prepared a fight or 2 might break out. Chances are a lot of the players in games like this don't have experience in a situation like this, and that could be dangerous.

We just had an annual charity game in town with Marty McSorely, Colton Orr, Brad May, Andre Roy playing in it..... keep your heads up fellas!

I'm sorry is this for real? No chance.....Even if this happened in someone's backyard off the rink, there would most likely be nothing criminal about it.
Yes, I was serious. I guess a "charity" hockey game is the only place you can legally pound a police officer in the face. Or is it another story when they are off-duty?

I get its heated and a huge rivalry, but seems like it might be a good idea to try it out without fighting and see how it affects sales? I agree with many of the others here saying it is a bad look seeing two United States of America first responders "hating each other" and carrying out violence in a hockey game.

Not sure why you mentioned being a cop, In this context, being a police officer is irrelevant. It’s two willing hockey players fighting, there’s nothing remotely criminal about it….

He clearly meant get charged for punching a cop. It would never happen but that's obviously what he meant.
