CAR makes a lot of trades, and seems to win most of them. They aren't afraid to get rid of players that don't fit or are going to be overpaid on their next contracts.
Yeah, but we kicked their arse with the Rask trade! :banghead:

Are you suggesting the Wild wait for better prospects before trying to assembling a contending roster?

MN needed to actually go for it during the Kaprizov years. The window was wide open, the team wasn't compete but it wasn't missing a lot either. The cap was there without the buyouts. The assets were there in draft picks and players (Greenway, Kunin, Spurgeon, Zucker, etc.) to make moves too.

Build around the FWD group Fenton left (Kap, Fiala, Boldy, Zucc and JEE). Add an Eichel to that top 6 instead of overpaying all these old depth vets and you've got a top-6 that can compete with anyone in the league. With a 3rd line of Parise/Hartman/Foligno. 4th line with the Deweys and whoever.

The d-corps is shaky with just Brodin, and Suter. Goalie isn't any worse with Kahk than Gus/MAF. ~$8m left (with a $10m center) to fill 12th FWD, 4 d-spots, and pressbox. Even more if you signed Fiala for term instead of the 1 year deal and Boldy to a bridge deal.

But why should Dumba have to leave because Fiala had 2 good months?

Accepting mediocrity(when was the last time we won a playoff series - 2014?) is not the way to go. You do whatever you can to avoid it.

I was spoiled growing up watching a team that was always a Cup contender, and often won. They had the best, and smartest GM in the league, who regularly beat other gm's in trades. He was also a great assessor talent, both in players and coaches. Despite that, he'd make mistakes, but unlike most GM's, was quick to recognize, and rectify them.

Strategic tanking is one tool in the toolbox available to GM's when improving the team long term. It is best done when there is a strong draft with one or more potential superstar players(McDavid not Hischier), and circumstances line up for a temporary tank (injury to star player(s), very strong divisional opponents, cap difficulties, trading a star player who is aging but can still bring back young prospects/picks). Tanking is sort of like spice in food. A little heat is nice, and can enhance the overall product. Too much and it's inedible(Buffalo/ARI).

When BG does it, people complain that players don't fit in BG's "clubhouse" or whatever.

Fantastic post. This year we lost Spurgeon and had Brodin out for a stretch, and even Kaprizov for a short while. It would have been a good year for it. All we needed to do was trade Foligno, Gaudreau, Hartman, and Zuccarello for picks, gutting the depth while retaining the talent. It could have been quick, and only painful for a short bit.

Cost certainty is great when it enables flexibility. It's absolutely terrible when it completely restricts it.

TBH Dumba was too much of a wildcard for me to include on the set roster with all that could have been done with him: trade, keep, lose in expansion draft, or walk as a FA.

Agreed but if you’ll recall at the time Dumba could have been moved to clear enough cap space to keep Fiala and Guerin pushed back on that because he thought Dumba was more valuable?

Watching the hawks these last few years has me actually kind of feeling sorry for Chi fans... those here that get all bent out of shape thinking the wild should tank are nuts. Even if Chi get Celebrini (if/when it happens I'm still going to shit my puke out of sheer disgust) they are still an extremely long ways away from icing an actual team. Miss me with that

They will get Demidov and then watch Bedard - Demidov connection for next dozen or more years. Chicago fans will be fine.
