As always it depends on the return. But at a minimum he needs a different defensive partner, one that doesn't stink, one that plays better defense than he does. He brings a lot of good to the table, it would have to be a killer offer to move him. I have him as the 3rd best asset on the team, after Matthews and Marner. And Marner is debateable.

Following in the footsteps of the Me 3, Rielly will ask for Doughty and Karlsson money. Dubas has not signed anybody under market value. What makes you think he can get Mo to sign an AAV of $6M. I would start at 8.

If people seriously think losing Hainsey was the issue, then Rielly is not even close to a #1D. (Hint: Hainsey was really bad, and Leafs are just playing bad in general this year).

Him and Reilly had good numbers together. Hainsey was responsible in his own end and positionally knew where to be. This allowed reilly to jump into the rush and capitalize on his strengths.

Actually he has:
- Tavares for 11m when he was offered 13m
- Spezza for a minimum when was offered more
- Kappy and AJ are both slightly under market value
- Mikheyev for 0.925m minimum when Gusev went for 4.5m

Jason Spezza :sarcasm:

Spezza wants to finish his career at home. Sure he may have gotten more elsewhere but he is pretty much at the end. I was more referring to the 5 RFAs. The only debate is AJ and Kappy (I slotted them with Vatrano) and even if there was an overpayment, it was not significant.

Rielly is a very good player. He's also a #1 who is dreadful defensively, and that's not just this season. If our biggest issue is defensive play, having a #1 like that is a core part of it.

Rielly was my choice for captain, but he might also be the most overrated player on the team. And the worst thing for us is that while his defensive issues go a long way to neutralize his insane offensive abilities, it doesn't have even close to the same effect on contract comparables.

We might find ourselves in a situation where we're stuck between two bad choices there.

You can’t judge anyone right now because the entire organization and fans lack confidence.
I’m certain when we turn the corner Morgan will be a main contributor.

8M for his offence, 2M for his defence--->meet in the middle at 5M over 7. Oops, no raise for you!

it may be crazy but I propose you move Rielly now. He needs to be sheltered defensively but is a beast offensively.

...what about this

Rielly for Ekholm & Sissons

Then move one of Kerfoot/Kapanen/Johnsson for another defensive d man.

NSH D would be disgusting (as always)

Josi/Ellis
Rielly/Fabbro
Hamhuis/Weber

Depends what he wants, but he's a top-5 offensive defensman in the entire lesgue. That coupled with being arguably the worst defensively for about 1.5 seasons to me SHOULD mean he's not going to get anything 9+, which is important.

Idk i feel like with a coach that doesnt use him as a shutdown D, and uses the offense best as possible he could be even better.

Rielly has always bad defensively. He is basically what people thought Erik karlsson was, dynamic offensively and weak defensively. People criticize Nylander, Marner, matthews and the other forwards for their work in the defensive zone, but I barely hear any criticism for Rielly, who's JOB is to play defence.

sometime I wonder if he is forward that is playing the wrong position.

Nope. You might be remembering the Hainsey in 2017-2018, that was surprisingly good. The Rielly-Hainsey pairing in 2018-2019 was terrible defensively, and having the Hyman-Tavares-Marner line be explosive offensively allowed fans to overlook that.

2018-2019 (5v5 Rielly Hainsey):
Rielly:
65 CA/60 (7.40 CA/60 Rel), 2.72 GA/60 (0.30 Relative), 2.80 xGA/60 (0.5 Relative), 12.7 HDCA/60 (2.94 Relative)
Hainsey: 65 CA/60 (7.40 CA/60 Rel), 2.56 GA/60 (0.13 Relative), 2.71 xGA/60 (0.38 Relative), 12.7 HDCA/60 (2.38 Relative)

2019-2020 (5v5 Rielly Ceci):
Rielly:
59 CA/60 (5.90 CA/60 Rel), 3.05 GA/60 (0.35 Relative), 2.14 xGA/60 (-0.13 Relative), 9.8 HDCA/60 (-1.02 Relative)
Ceci: 58 CA/60 (4.20 CA/60 Rel), 2.29 GA/60 (-0.86 Relative), 2.16 xGA/60 (-0.10 Relative), 9.7 HDCA/60 (-1.28 Relative)

He has been disappointing this year.

He's had some really blatantly inept defensive moments this year.

He's still very good offensively.

He needs someone who is better than he is defensively to play with.

He needs a defensive partner to be paired with. He's unreal offensively but not so good defensively, so there will always need to be a bit of yin and yang with his pairing. A guy like Muzzin you can pair with anyone because he's a great two way guy. But ya, you totally re-sign a guy like Rielly 10/10, he's someone you keep, they just need to shape the D core a little differently

Rielly has been bad but he is obviously playing through an injury, which is probably a season ender if it requires surgery to fix. There's a reason he misses half of the practices this year.

That is what I am willing to offer him. What would you offer him? Dubas is offering at least 8M.
His open market value is likely over $8m.

As for whether Dubas offers him open market value... well, he definitely didn't get deals from any of the forwards. $8m would make him tied for 4th with two other D-men. He was 5th in Norris voting. So that's roughly in line.

I would be open in trading him for the right return, though. He's got two more years at $5m after this one, and that's phenomenal for a near ppg D-man, even one as defensively deficient as Morgan is.
