From the main boards:

So DarrenDreger just said if NHL expands (almost certain it will) that teams can protect 7 forwards, 3 defenseman, and 1 goalie.

If the league expands by 1 team existing franchises can lose 1 player. If the league expands by 2 they can lose 2 players. 1st and 2nd year players are exempt. So are prospects.

So who in your team would you protect? Seems that given theabilityto protect 7 forwards 3 defenseman and 1 goalie some teams are going to lose some good players.

What would be our protection list? And assuming the league expands to 2 teams who do you think our 2 players picked would be?

Last two forwards I'll leave blank because I don't know if we need to protect guys like Ghetto, McCarron etc. If not than chose any of the 4th liners we have like Daneault, Matteau, Mitchell etc...

I think its pretty easy for us depending on if only NHL regulars count

Price (no brainer)

Subban
Petry
Beaulieu

Galchenyuk
Gallagher
Pacioretty
Plekanec
Eller

To be honest, the rest is expendable in regards to our NHL regulars, but if you want to add players that played in at least 25 games in the NHL this year, I would add

Andrighetto
One of Mitchell or Byron (Probably Byron)

It's not that complicated to come up with an educated guess for this season.
Next season however...? Hudon and Andrighetto will be eligible, Desharnais and Markov will be UFA. Galchenyuk, Pacioretty and Gallagher will get protected. Price too. Subban, Petry and Beaulieu too (if 76 and 26 has to be).

Otherwise it's up in the air. I wouldn't protect Eller so quickly, however.

Next season, Hudon and Ghetto will have to be protected. McCarron and Sherback won't.

7 Forwards:
Galchenyuk
Pacioretty
Gallagher
Plekanec
Andrighetto
de la Rose
Carr

3 d-man:
Subban
Petry
Beaulieu

1 goalie:
Carey Price

Exempt:
McCarron (could be eligible next season depending on his playing time I think. If so, he replaces de la Rose)
Hudon
Dietz

Unprotected:
Desharnais
Eller
Matteau
Markov
Emelin
Pateryn
Scrivens
Condon
Gilbert (ufa)
Flynn
Mitchell
Byron
Barberio
Danault
Bartley
Brown
Lessio

Most likely to get claimed:
Byron & Eller

Markov would probably retire before playing for an expansion team.

Thanks. My list would be:
Price

Beaulieu

Chucky
Gally

Hudon
DLR

It's basically between DLR and Ghetto so I went with DLR because the Habs already have enough smaller sized, skilled players. I also think DLR has a higher ceiling than he's currently showing and can be a shut down 3rd line centre which is always valuable.

Hopefully expansion would purge some of the crap bergevin signed

Pretty much.

We'd be one of the teams least impacted by the draft given how little we have in terms of elite talent. Some teams are going to lose major pieces while we'll enjoy the shield of immunity thanks to built-in craptitude.

My mistake : Ghetto has to be protected THIS season (and the next one).

Many haven't read the OP.

"1st and 2nd year players are exempt. So are prospects."

So guys like Andrighetto and Carr don't need to be protected.

changed it up a little bit. Unprotected Eller. Hudon over Carr if you're right but Hudon doesn't even have 1 accrued NHL season so I think you're wrong. Carr will be in his 2nd year next season, so assuming the draft is next season he'd be indeed eligible.

My current list would be:

Price

Subban
Beaulieu
Petry

Patches
Chucky
Gally
Pleky
Eller

Then the two others would be the best of Hudon/Carr/Andrighetto/Danault/DLR
If I'd have to pick right now I think I'd go with Hudon and Danault.

Basically : players in their 1st and 2nd pro year have to be protected. I take for granted that EXP. draft is before July, so, as an example, Daniel Carr won't be eligible. Sven Andrighetto will.

changed it up a little bit. Unprotected Eller. Hudon over Carr if you're right but Hudon doesn't even have 1 accrued NHL season so I think you're wrong

It's "pro season".

Many haven't read the OP.

"1st and 2nd year players are exempt. So are prospects."

So guys like Andrighetto and Carr don't need to be protected.

You did the same mistake than me : Andrighetto is on his 3rd pro year.

Though I Wonder : Does "pro season" include European pro's?

Eller would get picked up. It's unlikely Carr would be.

Hence you protect Eller. He holds more value.

It's probably for next season, not this one. Daneault is younger, cost-controlled. Eller will be one year away from UFA. But Plekanec too will be one year away from UFA.

It's a close call and it mostly hinges on Danault's play next season.

Anyone and everyone that says Plekanec should get a slap behind the head.

If a GM is stupid enough to claim that overpriced kitten that's never had great playoffs and hasn't scored a goal in 2016, GREAT. There's players every summer available at half the price that brings what he brings to the table now.

DD would be a perfect fit on tue 1st line in Vegas

DD will be on his UFA year.
If the Habs sign him, he's protected.
If the Habs don't sign him, he's UFA anyway so he doesn't get claimed.

I would guess Eller , Emelin or Pateryn would be picked off. Eller being the prime candidate.

Both are exempt, unless DLR pro year in Sweden counts.

Oh, I'm saying Eller isn't protected...
This season, he absolutely is.
It's next season I wouldn't go so fast.

And something tells me Daneault will get protected.

Can you name a couple of those ?
